Correlation between extinction pattern and δ13C fluctuations across the Triassic Jurassic boundary in shallow water settings: a proxy for the present…
2018
With the aim to assess the possible influence of the carbon variations on the benthic communities across the Triassic Jurassic boundary we have carried out sedimentological, biostratigraphic and stable isotope studies on an about 220 m thick peritidal section cropping out in Northwestern Sicily. The subtidal facies of the lower and middle part of this succession show the common occurrence of large and thick megalodontids and a benthic foraminiferal assemblage with Triasina hantkeni and Aulotuortids that supports a Rhaetian age. In the lower part of the succession, a significative biotic perturbation is evidenced by a sudden reduction of the size, shell thickness and abundance of the large m…
Large deviations results for subexponential tails, with applications to insurance risk
1996
AbstractConsider a random walk or Lévy process {St} and let τ(u) = inf {t⩾0 : St > u}, P(u)(·) = P(· | τ(u) < ∞). Assuming that the upwards jumps are heavy-tailed, say subexponential (e.g. Pareto, Weibull or lognormal), the asymptotic form of the P(u)-distribution of the process {St} up to time τ(u) is described as u → ∞. Essentially, the results confirm the folklore that level crossing occurs as result of one big jump. Particular sharp conclusions are obtained for downwards skip-free processes like the classical compound Poisson insurance risk process where the formulation is in terms of total variation convergence. The ideas of the proof involve excursions and path decompositions for Mark…
Large systems of path-repellent Brownian motions in a trap at positive temperature
2006
We study a model of $ N $ mutually repellent Brownian motions under confinement to stay in some bounded region of space. Our model is defined in terms of a transformed path measure under a trap Hamiltonian, which prevents the motions from escaping to infinity, and a pair-interaction Hamiltonian, which imposes a repellency of the $N$ paths. In fact, this interaction is an $N$-dependent regularisation of the Brownian intersection local times, an object which is of independent interest in the theory of stochastic processes. The time horizon (interpreted as the inverse temperature) is kept fixed. We analyse the model for diverging number of Brownian motions in terms of a large deviation princip…
Fractional Brownian motion and Martingale-differences
2004
Abstract We generalize a result of Sottinen (Finance Stochastics 5 (2001) 343) by proving an approximation theorem for the fractional Brownian motion, with H> 1 2 , using martingale-differences.
BROWNIAN DYNAMICS SIMULATIONS WITHOUT GAUSSIAN RANDOM NUMBERS
1991
We point out that in a Brownian dynamics simulation it is justified to use arbitrary distribution functions of random numbers if the moments exhibit the correct limiting behavior prescribed by the Fokker-Planck equation. Our argument is supported by a simple analytical consideration and some numerical examples: We simulate the Wiener process, the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process and the diffusion in a Φ4 potential, using both Gaussian and uniform random numbers. In these examples, the rate of convergence of the mean first exit time is found to be nearly identical for both types of random numbers.
Familiarity and visit characteristics as determinants of tourists' experience at a cruise destination
2019
Abstract The main aim of this study was to examine the differences in the interrelationships between destination image-satisfaction-behavioural intention across cruise tourists with varying visit characteristics (length of stay and type of visit arrangement) and familiarity. The data for the study was obtained through interviews with cruise passengers visiting a major Spanish port of call. The results revealed that both familiarity (informational and behavioural) and type of visit arrangement (excursion versus independent visit) moderated the hypothesized structural relationships. The moderating role of length of stay onshore was only demonstrated on the impact of satisfaction on behavioura…
Acidification processes in a peritidal carbonate succession across the Triassic/Jurassic boundary (Sicily)
2017
For the first time, a correlation between biostratigraphic events and δ13C curve was attempted along an UpperTriassic-Lower Jurassic peritidal limestone succession cropping out in westernmost Sicily. The peritidal carbonates are organized in shallowing upward cycles characterized by subtidal skeletal mudstone to grainstone, intertidal microbial mats and supratidal paleosoils. About 300 meters of this succession covering the Triassic-Jurassic interval were studied in details. On the base of the macro- and microfossil assemblages from the subtidal facies, four informal units have been recognized along the studied section. Unit R1 (at the base, 111 m thick) is dominated by large megalodonts, r…
Resident attitude towards tourism and visitor: determinant factors in rural-cultural tourism and excursionism
2009
-Marcelo.
Fine adaptive control of precision grip without maximum pinch strength changes after median nerve mobilization
2020
ABSTRACTFine dexterity critically depends on information conveyed by the median nerve. While the effects of its compression and vibration are well characterized, little is known about longitudinal tension and excursion. Using a force-sensitive manipulandum, a numeric dynamometer and Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments, we examined the adaptations of precision grip control, maximum pinch strength and fingertips pressure sensation threshold before and immediately after the application of longitudinal tension and excursion mobilizations applied on the median nerve. Grip (GF) and load (LF) forces applied by the thumb, index and major fingers were collected in 40 healthy young participants during thr…
