Perfusion heterogeneity does not explain excess muscle oxygen uptake during variable intensity exercise

2010

Previous research investigating endurance sports from a physiological perspectivehas mainly used constant or graded exercise protocols, although the nature ofsports like cross-country skiing and road cycling leads to continuous variations inworkload. Current knowledge is thus limited as regards physiological responses tovariations in exercise intensity. Therefore, the overall objective of the present thesiswas to investigate cardiovascular and metabolic responses to fluctuations inexercise intensity during exercise. The thesis is based on four studies (Studies I-IV);the first two studies use a variable intensity protocol with cardiorespiratory andblood measurements during cycling (Study I) …

Post-exercise heart rate variability of endurance athletes after different high-intensity exercise interventions

2007

Methodological problems have limited the number of studies on heart rate variability (HRV) dynamics immediately after exercise. We used the short-time Fourier transform method to study immediate (5 min) and slow (30 min) recovery of HRV after different high-intensity exercise interventions. Eight male athletes performed two interval interventions at 85% and 93% (IV(85) and IV(93)) and two continuous interventions at 80% and 85% (CO(80) and CO(85)) of the velocity at VO2max (vVO2max). We found no increase in high frequency power (HFP), but low frequency (LFP) and total power (TP) increased (P<0.05) during the first 5 min of the recovery after each intervention. During the 30-min recovery, HF…

Adaptations to aerobic interval training: interactive effects of exercise intensity and total work duration

2011

To compare the effects of three 7-week interval training programs varying in work period duration but matched for effort in trained recreational cyclists. Thirty-five cyclists (29 male, 6 female, VO(2peak) 52 ± 6 mL kg/min) were randomized to four training groups with equivalent training the previous 2 months (∼6 h/wk, ∼1.5 int. session/wk). Low only (n=8) trained 4-6 sessions/wk at a low-intensity. Three groups (n=9 each) trained 2 sessions/wk × 7 wk: 4 × 4 min, 4 × 8 min, or 4 × 16 min, plus 2-3 weekly low-intensity bouts. Interval sessions were prescribed at the maximal tolerable intensity. Interval training was performed at 88 ± 2, 90 ± 2, and 94 ± 2% of HR(peak) and 4.9, 9.6, and 13.2 …

Do Obese Children Achieve Maximal Heart Rate during Treadmill Running?

2019

Objective: Maximal heart rate (HR) is commonly defined as the highest HR obtained during a progressive exercise test to exhaustion. Maximal HR is considered one of the criteria to assess maximum exertion in exercise tests, and is broadly used when prescribing exercise intensity. The aim of the present study was to compare peak HR measurements during maximal treadmill running and active play in obese children and adolescents. Design: Comparison of peak heart rate during active play vs. maximal treadmill running in 39 (7&ndash

Heart rate recovery after maximal and submaximal exercise

2012

Pasi Karjalainen (2012). Heart rate recovery after maximal and submaximal exercise. Department of Biology of Physical Activity, University of Jyväskylä, Master thesis in exercise physiology, 76 pages. Heart rate recovery (HRR) after exercise reflects autonomic control of the heart. Heart rate recovery (HRR) has shown to have prognostic value among asymptomatic populations and patients with diseases. In addition, changes in HRR may reflect the effects of training load. The role of parasympathetic reactivation in decrease of heart rate (HR) is known to be strong immediately after the cessation of exercise. It is also shown that HRR is affected by the activity of the sympathetic system that is…
