Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Associations between Leisure Time Physical Activity, Mental Well-Being and Subjective Health in Middle Adulthood
2019
Previous studies have shown that participation in leisure time physical activity is related to better mental well-being and subjective health. However, the associations between different types of leisure time physical activities and different dimensions of mental well-being have rarely been studied. In addition, longitudinal research, analyzing possible causal relations between these variables, is lacking. To investigate these research questions, data gathered at ages 42 and 50 (present N = 303) for the Finnish Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Personality and Social Development were used. Physical activity was assessed as frequency of participation at ages 42 and 50, and at age 50 also as fr…
Suspected motor problems and low preference for active play in childhood are associated with physical inactivity and low fitness in adolescence.
2011
Background This prospective longitudinal study investigates whether suspected motor problems and low preference for active play in childhood are associated with physical inactivity and low cardiorespiratory fitness in adolescence. Methodology/Principal Findings The study sample consisted of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 (NFBC 1986) composed of 5,767 children whose parents responded to a postal inquiry concerning their children's motor skills at age 8 years and who themselves reported their physical activity at age 16 years. Cardiorespiratory fitness was measured with a cycle ergometer test at age 16 years. Odds ratios (OR) and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for the level o…
Trunk Muscle Strength After Lumbar Spine Fusion: A 12-Month Follow-up.
2019
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate changes in trunk muscle strength 12 months after lumbar spine fusion (LSF) compared to preoperative strength. Methods: A total of 194 patients (mean ± standard deviation [SD] age, 61 ± 21 years) who underwent LSF participated in this prospective longitudinal study. Physical measurements of the participants were made before surgery and 12 months postoperatively. Isometric trunk extension and flexion strength was measured using a strain-gauge dynamometer in the standing position. Strength changes were calculated. Regression analysis was performed to explore which factors predicted strength levels at 12 months postoperatively. Results: The pr…
Evidence on the effects of exercise therapy in the treatment of chronic disease
2009
Evidence on the effects of exercise in the treatment of patients with chronic diseases should be based on well designed randomised controlled trials. The most consistent finding of the meta-analyses summarised in the present work is that aerobic/functional capacity and muscle strength can be improved by exercise training among patients with different diseases without having detrimental effects on disease progression. This is important, as with population aging exercise therapy may be an important means of reducing disability and increasing the number of older people living independently. Additionally, there is accumulating evidence that in patients with chronic disease exercise therapy is e…
Role of nuclear factor κB and mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling in exercise-induced antioxidant enzyme adaptation
2007
Activation of nuclear factor (NF) κB and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways in skeletal muscle has been shown to enhance the gene expression of several enzymes that play an important role in maintaining oxidant–antioxidant homeostasis, such as mitochondrial superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). While an acute bout of exercise activates NFκB and MAPK signaling and upregulates MnSOD and iNOS, administration of chemical agents that suppress reactive oxygen species (ROS) production can cause attenuation of exercise-induced MnSOD and iNOS expression. Thus, ROS generation during exercise may have duel effects: the infliction of oxidative stress an…
Talentfull gjennom lek? Forholdet mellom uorganisert trening, selvregulert læring og trenerens talentvurdering blant unge norske fotballspillere
2015
Is simple better? A methodical comparison of monitoring training load in well-trained cyclists
2015
Masteroppgave idrettsvitenskap- Universitetet i Agder, 2015 Background: Lack of a “gold-standard” for measuring training load (TL) makes it challenging for coaches and athletes to avoid over- or under-reaching during endurance training. Purpose: To describe physical and perceptual exertional demands of high intensity training (HIT) and explain variance in quantification of TL with use of Banister’s training impulse (BanTRIMP), session rating of perceived exertion (sRPE) and individualized training impulse (iTRIMP). Method: During 12 weeks, 12 well-trained male cyclists (VO2peak 60 ± 3 ml · kg-1 · min-1) completed 879 individual endurance training sessions including HIT-sessions; 4 x 16 min,…
Ekspiratorisk flow avgrensingar under fysisk belastning hos ungdommar med astma : Før og etter 10 vekers intervensjon
2019
Masteroppgave folkehelsevitenskap ME516 - Universitetet i Agder 2019 Background:Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder associated with variable airflo w obstruction and bronchial hyperresponsivness. Asthma may interfere with the ability of childre n and adolescents to participatein physical activity, as well ascreatebarriers towards involvement. Physical activity is an important stimulus for asthma symptoms. Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction is traditionally used when physical activity is the cause of asthma symptoms, but this is measured after exercise. There is little knowledge about flow limitat io n during exercise. Aim:The purpose of this study is to investigate expiratory flow l…
Long-term health-related quality of life of breast cancer survivors remains impaired compared to the age-matched general population especially in you…
2021
Objective To investigate long-term health-related quality of life (HRQoL) changes over time in younger compared to older disease-free breast cancer survivors who participated in a prospective randomized exercise trial. Methods Survivors (aged 35–68 years) were randomized to a 12-month exercise trial after adjuvant treatment and followed up for ten years. HRQoL was assessed with the generic 15D instrument during follow-up and the younger (baseline age ≤ 50) and older (age >50) survivors’ HRQoL was compared to that of the age-matched general female population (n = 892). The analysis included 342 survivors. Results The decline of HRQoL compared to the population was steeper and recovery slower…
[Exercices program and rehabilitation of motor disorders in Parkinson's disease].
2000
International audience; As long as motor disorders are controlled by DOPAtherapy, exercise programs and rehabilitation would not appear to be essential for patients suffering from Parkinson's disease. Such measures do become necessary however when secondary occurrence of motor decline develops. Physical medicine and rehabilitation have not been really involved in Parkinson's disease and few articles have assessed the value of these programs. In fact, controlled randomized studies have faced two kinds of methodological difficulties, those due to rehabilitation practices, and those due to Parkinson's disease specificity, especially similarities between groups for Hoehn and Yahr stage at study…
