Spiser mosjonister og supermosjonister sunt? : En kartlegging av kostholdet til mannlige utholdenhetsmosjonister og supermosjonister

2017

Masteroppgave folkehelsevitenskap ME516 - Universitetet i Agder 2017 Background: To achieve the optimal recovery between workouts and best possible performance at training and in competitions, an optimal diet is essential for athletes at all levels. Previous studies have focused on the nutritional status of female athletes and few studies have researched the dietary habits and possible negative consequences of an insufficient diet in male athletes. Purpose: The main purpose of this study was to characterize the dietary intake of a group endurance-trained man and, on the basis of their physical fitness, compare their diets to the energy and nutrition recommendations developed by Helsedirekto…

Children's expectancy beliefs and subjective task values through two years of school-based program and associated links to physical education enjoyme…

2016

Purpose: The present study examined the patterns of children's expectancy beliefs and subjective task values through the Physical Activity as Civil Skill Program and associated links to physical education enjoyment and total physical activity. Methods: The sample comprised 401 children aged 9–13 years from 3 small towns located in North-East Finland. All children received school-based activities across 2-year program from Grades 5 to 7. The present data were collected using questionnaires across 3 measurement phases during 2012–2014. Results: The levels of expectancy beliefs and subjective task values indicated to be relatively high and the development was stable through the program, especi…

Epigenetic Status of an Adenovirus Type 12 Transgenome upon Long-Term Cultivation in Hamster Cells

2007

ABSTRACT The epigenetic status of integrated adenovirus type 12 (Ad12) DNA in hamster cells cultivated for about 4 decades has been investigated. Cell line TR12, a fibroblastic revertant of the Ad12-transformed epitheloid hamster cell line T637 with 15 copies of integrated Ad12 DNA, carries one Ad12 DNA copy plus a 3.9-kbp fragment from a second copy. The cellular insertion site for the Ad12 integrate, identical in both cell lines, is a >5.2-kbp inverted DNA repeat. The Ad12 transgenome is packaged around nucleosomes. The cellular junction is more sensitive to micrococcal nuclease at Ad12-occupied sites than at unoccupied sites. Bisulfite sequencing reveals complete de novo methylation i…

Vitamin and Mineral Supplementation and Neuromuscular Recovery after a Running Race

2006

International audience; Purpose: This double-blind study investigated the effects of vitamin and mineral complex supplementation on the neuromuscular function of the knee-extensor muscles after a prolonged trail running race. Methods: Twenty-two well-trained endurance runners took either placebo (Pl group) or vitamins and minerals (Vm group) for 21 d before the race and for 2 d after the race. Maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) and surface EMG activity of the vastus lateralis (VL) muscle were recorded before (pre) and 1 h (post), 24 h (post 24) and 48 h (post 48) after the race. Central activation ratio (CAR), neural (M-wave), and contractile (muscular twitch) properties of the quadriceps…

Use of dietary supplements and anabolic-androgenic steroids among Finnish adolescents in 1991-2005.

2009

Background : The aim of the study was to describe the prevalence, trends and associated factors of dietary supplements (DS) and anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) use among Finnish adolescents. Methods: The sample comprised 30 511 adolescents aged 12–18 years, of which 22 519 (74%) answered a questionnaire. We also studied associations between 14 socioeconomic, health and health behavioural variables and DS and AAS use by logistic regression. Results: The proportion of respondents using DS was 45% during the past year and it increased linearly by age. Vitamins (37%) and herbal products (13%) were the most common DSs. In 1991, 9% of the boys aged 16–18 years reported protein use, while the f…

Use of nutritional supplement to improve performance in professional soccer players: A case report

2020

The aim of the study was to investigate the intake percentage and the satisfaction level of some nutritional supplements used by professional soccer players. Twenty-nine professional soccer players (age: 24.6 ± 5.2 years, body weight: 79.2 ± 4.9 kg, body height: 1.83 ± 0.05 m) belonging to a team of Serie A were interviewed on: frequency of use, tolerability, and acceptance of the supplements (creatine, β-alanine, whey protein, nitrates, vitamin D3, caffeine) proposed by the nutritionist team. This survey revealed a great inter-individual variability on the intake of the proposed supplements. All respondents (n = 29) said they take cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), 17 out of 29 creatine, 14 out…

Kinetics of green asparagus ascorbic acid heated in a high-temperature thermoresistometer

1999

Thermal degradation of green asparagus ascorbic acid in high-temperature short-time conditions was studied by heating in a five-channel computer-controlled thermoresistometer. Ascorbic acid was heated to between 110  °C and 140  °C and the degradation kinetics were analyzed assuming that two different inactivation mechanisms were occurring, one aerobic and the other anaerobic. The two reactions followed first-order kinetics, with E a=12.3(2.0) kcal/mol and k 125  °C=47.0(3.0)×10–3 s–1 for the aerobic oxidation, and E a=6.1(1.4) kcal/mol and k 125  °C=4.1(0.2)×10–3 s–1 for the anaerobic degradation.

Fostering antioxidant defences: up-regulation of antioxidant genes or antioxidant supplementation?

2007

Vitamins have traditionally been considered as food components that are required in the normal diet to prevent deficiencies. However, a newer concept of the function of vitamins in nutrition has taken them beyond simply prevention of deficiency symptoms. This concept considers that many vitamins, when taken in relatively larges doses, have important functions beyond preventing deficiencies. Linus Pauling was instrumental in putting forward this concept, particularly for vitamin C. Thus, relatively high intakes of vitamins, and in particular vitamins C and E which are antioxidants, are considered to be healthy for the human population. This may be true in some special situations such as, for…
