Influence of stretch-shortening cycle on mechanical behaviour of triceps surae during hopping.

1992

Six subjects performed a first series of vertical plantar flexions and a second series of vertical rebounds, both involving muscle triceps surae exclusively. Vertical displacements, vertical forces and ankle angles were recorded during the entire work period of 60 seconds per series. In addition, expired gases were collected during the test and recovery for determination of the energy expenditure. Triceps surae was mechanically modelled with a contractile component and with an elastic component. Mechanical behaviour and work of the different muscle components were determined in both series. The net muscular efficiency calculated from the work performed by the centre of gravity was 17.5 +/- …

Variability in Lateral Positioning of Surface EMG Electrodes

2009

The positions of EMG electrodes over the knee extensor muscles were examined in 19 healthy men using MR images; electrodes were placed according to the SENIAM (surface electromyography for non-invasive assessment of muscles) guidelines. From axial images, the medial and lateral borders of the muscles were identified, and the arc length of the muscle surface was measured. The electrode location was expressed as a percentage value from the muscle’s medial border. EMGs were recorded during isometric maximal contraction, squat jumps, and countermovement jumps and analyzed for cross-correlation. The results showed that variations in lateral positioning were greatest in vastus medialis (47% SD 11…

Store and recoil of elastic energy in slow and fast types of human skeletal muscles.

1982

Stretch-shortening cycle refers to the mechanical condition in which store and recoil of elastic energy occur in the skeletal muscle. This leads to a greater work output when compared to a simple shortening contraction. The subjects performed vertical jumps with and without preliminary counter-movement and with small and large knee angular displacement. The results indicated that those subjects who had more fast twitch (FT) fibers benefited more from the stretching phase performed with high speed and short angular displacement. The amounts of elastic energy stored in this phase were 30 and 26 N X kgBW-1, respectively, for FT and slow twitch (ST) type subjects. The recoil of elastic energy w…

EMG, heart rate, and accelerometer as estimators of energy expenditure in locomotion.

2014

AB Purpose: Precise measures of energy expenditure (EE) during everyday activities are needed. This study assessed the validity of novel shorts measuring EMG and compared this method with HR and accelerometry (ACC) when estimating EE. Methods: Fifty-four volunteers (39.4 +/- 13.9 yr) performed a maximal treadmill test (3-min loads) including walking with different speeds uphill, downhill, and on level ground and one running load. The data were categorized into all, low, and level loads. EE was measured by indirect calorimetry, whereas HR, ACC, and EMG were measured continuously. EMG from quadriceps (Q) and hamstrings (H) was measured using shorts with textile electrodes. Validity of the met…

Effect of innervation zones in estimating biceps brachii force-EMG relationship during isometric contraction

2012

Measuring muscle forces in vivo is invasive and consequently indirect methods e.g., electromyography (EMG) are used in estimating muscular force production. The aim of the present paper was to examine what kind of effect the disruption of the physiological signal caused by the innervation zone has in predicting the force/torque output from surface EMG. Twelve men (age 26 (SD ±3)years; height 179 (±6)cm; body mass 73 (±6)kg) volunteered as subjects. They were asked to perform maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVC) in elbow flexion, and submaximal contractions at 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50% and 75% of the recorded MVC. EMG was measured from biceps brachii muscle with an electrode grid of 5…

Physical activity, healthy behaviors and its motivational correlates: exploring the spillover effect through stages of change

2022

On the basis of the spillover or transfer effect and the transtheoretical model of change, this study assessed the association between amount of physical activity, healthy and unhealthy weight control behaviors, and motivational types, as well as their variability across stages of change. A total of 1219 randomly selected Mexican adults from 18 to 65 years old, representative of the city of Monterrey (México), participated in the study. Correlation analyses, differences by gender, and multivariate analyses of variance, controlling for age, were performed. We found that in the maintenance stage, there is higher frequency of physical activity more healthy weight control behaviors, as well as …

Physical activity and quality of cardiopulmonary resuscitation: A secondary analysis of the MANI-CPR trial

2021

Abstract Introduction The association between the level of physical activity and quality of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) performed by laypeople is unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the associations between physical activity level and laypeople performance during an eight-minute scenario of CPR. Materials and methods This study was a secondary analysis of the MANI-CPR Trial. The entire cohort of participants was grouped based on the level of physical activity assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) into a “low-moderate” level group and a “high” level group. Descriptive statistics were used for unadjusted analysis and multivariate logistic …

Effect of chronic unloading and rehabilitation on human Achilles tendon properties: a velocity-encoded phase-contrast MRI study

2008

The objective of this study was to measure and monitor changes in Achilles tendon mechanical properties and force production capability of triceps surae muscles after 4 wk of limb suspension and 6 wk of physical rehabilitation. Five healthy volunteers underwent unilateral lower limb suspension followed by weekly physiotherapy. A velocity-encoded, phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (VE-PC-MRI) technique was used to estimate the tendon strain as a function of force produced during the submaximal isometric contractions. After limb suspension, triceps surae muscle strength decreased to 53.2 ± 15.6% (mean ± SD) of the presuspension level ( P < 0.05). Young's modulus, estimated from the…

Interrelationships between electromyographic, mechanical, muscle structure and reflex time measurements in man.

1981

Reaction time (TRT) with its premotor (PMT) and motor time (MT) components, patellar reflex time (TRfT) with its latency (LAT) and motor time (RfMT) were studied together with isometric force production and relaxation time variables in one leg isometric knee extension. These variables were intercorrelated together with muscle biopsy variables taken from m. vastus lateralis. From these computations MT proved to demonstrate significant correlations to rate of isometric force development (RFD) (P less than 0.001), maximum force (P0) (P less than 0.001) and per cent distribution of ST fibers (P less than 0.001). It is speculated that these relationships are determined by the pattern of the moto…

Treadmill versus overground and barefoot versus shod comparisons of triceps surae fascicle behaviour in human walking and running

2013

Studies of human locomotion are commonly performed on a treadmill or overground, as well as with or without footwear. These testing modalities have been suggested to influence kinematics, kinetics and/or spatio-temporal variables differently. However, it is unclear whether they influence contractile behaviour at the level of the muscle fascicles. This has major relevance because results from studies performed with different combinations of the testing modalities are often compared. The present study used ultrasound to examine fascicle behaviour of the medial gastrocnemius (MG) and soleus muscles of ten young, healthy males during walking and running on a treadmill and overground, as well as…
