Electron Irradiation Effects on Single‐Layer MoS 2 Obtained by Gold‐Assisted Exfoliation

2022

International audience; Mechanical exfoliation assisted by gold is applied to obtain good quality large lateral size single-layer MoS2. The effects of 2.5 MeV electron irradiation are investigated at room temperature on structural and electronic features by Raman and microluminescence spectroscopy. The exciton recombination emission in the direct bandgap of single-layer MoS2 is affected during irradiation starting from the minimum explored dose of 1 kGy. At higher doses, Raman bands show no relevant modifications whereas the exciton emission is quenched, suggesting that irradiation-induced point defects affect exciton dynamics.

Hexagonal nanosheets from the exfoliation of Ni2+-Fe3+ LDHs: a route towards layered multifunctional materials

2010

Here we report the synthesis of a crystalline micrometric-sized hexagonal-shaped Ni2+-Fe3+ LDH by following a modified homogeneous precipitation method. The exfoliation of the material in formamide leads to stable suspensions of hexagonal nanometric sheets, which have been extensively characterized. Our data confirm that the intrinsic properties of the bulk material are retained by these segregated nanosheets, thus opening the door for their use in the development of layered multifunctional materials.

Thermal Properties, Raman Spectroscopy and Tem Images of Neutron-Bombarded Graphite

2013

Neutron-irradiated graphite to a total dose of 3.6 × 1016 n cm−2 was studied by DSC, Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Wigner energy of neutron-irradiated graphite was 9.5 J/g as measured by DSC; it was released with an exothermal peak at 220°C. The Raman spectroscopy has confirmed the expected effect caused by neutron irradiation of the graphite substrate. The TEM imaging has shown that neutron-irradiated graphite can be effectively exfoliated by sonication in comparison to pristine graphite, which under similar conditions does not exfoliate at all. The interstitial Frenkel defects in neutron-irradiated graphite are intercalated between the graphene layers …

Novel organo-modifier for thermally-stable polymer-layered silicate nanocomposites

2015

A new novel approach for the stabilisation of polymer-clay nanocomposites has been investigated based on reacting chemically an antioxidant function, a hindered phenol moiety, with an organic modifier based on a quaternary ammonium salt. The chemically linked antioxidant-containing organic modifier (AO-OM) was then introduced into natural montmorillonite (MMt) through a cation-exchange reaction resulting in antioxidant-containing organo-modified clay (AO-OM-MMt). The new antioxidant-containing modified clay, along with other organo-modified clays having a similar organo-modifier but without the reacted antioxidant, were characterised by spectroscopic, thermogravimetric and x-ray diffraction…

Serological Levels of Anti-clathrin Antibodies Are Decreased in Patients With Pseudoexfoliation Glaucoma

2021

Evidence for immunologic contribution to glaucoma pathophysiology is steadily increasing in ophthalmic research. Particularly, an altered abundance of circulating autoantibodies to ocular antigens is frequently observed. Here, we report an analysis of autoantibody abundancies to selected antigens in sera of open-angle glaucoma patients, subdivided into normal-tension glaucoma (N = 31), primary open-angle glaucoma (N = 43) and pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (N = 45), vs. a non-glaucomatous control group (N = 46). Serum samples were analyzed by protein microarray, including 38 antigens. Differences in antibody levels were assessed by ANOVA. Five serological antibodies showed significantly altered…

Efficacy of amoxicillin and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid in the prevention of infection and dry socket after third molar extraction: a systematic revi…

2016

Background: Prophylactic use of amoxicillin and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, although controversial, is common in routine clinical practice in third molar surgery. Material and Methods: Our objective was to assess the efficacy of prophylactic amoxicillin with or without clavulanic acid in reducing the incidence of dry socket and/or infection after third molar extraction. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis consulting electronic databases and references in retrieved articles. We included double-blind placebo-controlled randomized clinical trials published up to June 2015 investigating the efficacy of amoxicillin with or without clavulanic acid on the incidence of the aforement…

Latanoprost-induced iris darkening: a morphometric study of human peripheral iridectomies.

2003

Abstract Purpose. This microscopic study was undertaken to compare the melanocytes of peripheral iridectomy specimens from two eyes that had latanoprost-induced iris darkening (LIID) with iridectomies taken from the fellow untreated eyes. Methods. The two patients in this study were the ones who underwent LIID in the latanoprost treated eye from a series of 17 patients requiring bilateral trabeculectomy. The first trabeculectomy procedure provided a control peripheral iridectomy for each patient, whereas the second eye was treated with once daily 50 μg ml−1 latanoprost drops for 6 months. The four peripheral iridectomy specimens from the two LIID patients were subjected to quantitative morp…

A case-control study on risk factors for nuclear, cortical and posterior subcapsular cataract: The Casteldaccia Eye Study

2005

. Purpose: To investigate risk factors for nuclear, cortical and posterior subcapsular age-related cataract. Methods: A case-control study was carried out on subjects aged 40 years and older, living in Casteldaccia, Sicily. Twenty-seven potential risk factors were investigated. Nuclear, cortical and posterior subcapsular opacities of the lens were classified according to the Lens Opacities Classification System II. Subjects with advanced lens opacities represented the cases, while an identical number of subjects without or with early cataract, matched for sex and age, were recruited as controls from within the same population. Results: Univariate analysis showed that myopia and iris atrophy…

Evaluating resurfacing modalities in aesthetics.

2022

Abstract Skin resurfacing for cutaneous rejuvenation has evolved with the development of a plethora of nonsurgical and minimally invasive modalities. We have highlighted the advances in laser therapy, chemical peels, radiofrequency, microneedling, and platelet-rich plasma therapy. We have also included studies providing head-to-head comparisons between procedures and discussed relevant debates in the field. We have examined additionally combination treatments and resurfacing in acne scars, melasma, and skin of color.
