An existential perspective on meaning, spirituality and authenticity in athletic careers
2014
This research examines athletes’ career paths and reflections of meaning in their sporting practices through an existential psychological lens. Through notions of spirituality and authenticity, we examined how competitive sport practices and bodily movement gain meaning, and often fundamentally shift meaning, in athletes’ lives. Reflective writings with a follow-up from 10 athletes were interpreted through an existential-narrative analysis. The results suggest that while the early years of sport practice are most often characterised as highly enjoyable experiences, for some, the later career development involves existential challenges such as value conflicts, losing a sense of authenticity,…

Existential risks of an excluded community: Le mani sulle città by Franco Rosi
2020
The essay focuses on the film Le mani sulla citta (Hands on the city, 1963) by Francesco Rosi. The film, set in Naples, explores some significant aspects of the Italian "Reconstruction" after the end of the Second World War and offers interesting insights. That period was characterized by a number of active, social and economic, recovery policies which produced job and development opportunities and triggered the development of the real estate market and urban speculation. Reconstruction meant consumption of resources (urban land and landscape), creation of new neighborhoods with proposed housing models unrelated to the population who moved to some new peripheral suburbs. This generated a so…
The Problem of Existential Import in Metathetic Propositions: Qutb al-Din al-Tahtani contra Fakhr al-Din al-Razi
2019
This paper addresses discussions in post-Avicennan Arabic logic on various characterizations of metathetic propositions and their status vis-à-vis the existential import condition by focusing on the arguments made by Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī (d. 606/1210) and the counter-arguments by Quṭb al-Dīn al-Rāzī al-Taḥtānī (d. 766/1365), both of whom established their positions in a framework drawn by Avicenna (Ibn Sīnā, d. 428/1037), the most prominent figure in the tradition of classical Arabic logic. In his logic texts, Avicenna thoroughly discusses the problem of the existential import in metathetic propositions (ma‘dūla), and seems to have presumed the existential import to be a truth-condition for…
Praxis e storia in Jean-Paul Sartre. Una rilettura della Critica della ragione dialettica
2017
Jean-Paul Sartre’s Critique de la raison dialectique consists of two tomes: La théorie des ensembles pratiques (published in 1960) and L’intelligibilité de l’histoire (published posthumously in 1985). The first tome includes two books: De la «praxis» individuelle au pratico-inerte and Du groupe à l’histoire. Thus Jean-Paul Sartre combines existentialism and historical materialism, referring to the concepts of praxis and of history. The concept of history is the main theme of his work, and it can be understood as a dialectical process in the complex system of the human relationships.
