Abstract Polyglutamine regions (polyQ) are highly abundant consecutive runs of glutamine residues. They have been generally studied in relation to the so-called polyQ-associated diseases, characterized by protein aggregation caused by the expansion of the polyglutamine tract via a CAG-slippage mechanism. The application of quadrupole devices with high field gradients and small apertures requires precise control over higher order multipole field components. We present a new scheme for performance control and tuning, which allows the illumination of most of the quadrupole device aperture because of the reduction of higher order field components. A series expansion of the extended Debye-H�ckel equation and application to linear prediction of stability constants

The Debye-Hückel semiempirical extended equation is frequently used to calculate activity coefficients of chemical species and equilibrium constants at ionic strengths different from those used in their experimental evaluation. A series expansion of the extended Debye-Hückel equation is proposed here and checked with experimental data taken from the literature. The expansion is linear in the ionic parameters and yields a geometrical series which converges rapidly and that enables the accurate calculation of interpolated and extrapolated activity coefficients and equilibrium constants by simple and multiple linear regression without previous knowledge of the ionic parameters.
Preliminary experience with the application of Gadolinium-DTPA before MR imaging-guided laser-induced interstitial thermotherapy of brain tumors

The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential value of i.v. gadolinium-diethylenetriamine penta-acetic acid (Gd-DTPA) applied before MRI-guided laser-induced interstitial thermotherapy (LITT) of brain tumors without original enhancement, especially in defining total lesion size during therapy. MRI-guided LITT was performed on two patients with astrocytoma WHO II. For both patients, Gd-DTPA was administered intravenously after a first irradiation period and LITT was continued after pulling back the light guide to coagulate the upper parts of the tumor. Myasthenia gravis (MG) with antibodies against the acetylcholine receptor (AChR-MG) is considered as a prototypic autoimmune disease. The thymus is important in the pathophysiology of the disease since thymus hyperplasia is a characteristic of early-onset AChR-MG and patients often improve after thymectomy. We hypothesized that thymic B cell and antibody repertoires of AChR-MG patients differ intrinsically from those of control individuals. Friedreich's ataxia is caused by mutations in the FRDA gene that encodes frataxin, a nuclear-encoded mitochondrial protein. Most patients are homozygous for the expansion of a GAA triplet repeat within the FRDA gene, but a few patients show compound heterozygosity for a point mutation and the GAA-repeat expansion. We analyzed DNA samples from a cohort of 241 patients with autosomal recessive or isolated spinocerebellar ataxia for the GAA triplet expansion. A 27-year-old woman with bruxism suffered a spider bite (Loxosceles rufescens) on the left cheek that caused severe local cellulitis, facial palsy, and painful hyperesthesia over the two lower trigeminal nerve divisions. Facial but not trigeminal neuropathy improved, and she developed a labial dystonia that only corrected while pressing the right medial incisor. A specially designed maxillary splint that continuously pressed it suppressed both dystonia and related spontaneous firing of motor unit potentials in electromyography. Phenotypic variants in Friedreich's ataxia include late onset, preservation of the lower limbs tendon reflexes, and slow progression. We describe clinical and electrophysiological features from three families with Friedreichlike phenotypes. Friedreich's ataxia diagnosis was confirmed by finding two allelic expansions of the GAA trinucleotide repeat at the X25 gene. In family 1 both patients had a late-onset phenotype with preservation of knee and ankle jerks, lack of cardiomyopathy, and preserved H reflex. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of sinus floor elevation using sequential bone dilators. Materials and Methods: Thirty patients took part in the study (18 women and 12 men) with ages ranging between thirty-six and sixty-three years, selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, who showed a bone deficit in the upper posterior alveolar margin of 5-8 mm in height. Sixty expanded platform internal connection implants were placed with diameters of 4/5/4 mm and lengths varying between 10 (n=10) and 11.5 mm (n= 50).
