Mathematics textbooks, opportunity to learn and student achievement
2005
Abstract Opportunity to learn is considered an important contributing factor in learning outcomes. In some of the latest international comparative studies of mathematics achievement, such as SIMS and TIMSS, painstaking efforts have been made to find out what the participating students' opportunities to learn mathematics had been. However, there have been problems with relating the findings to student outcomes. This article approaches opportunity to learn in three different ways. Among these approaches, an item-based analysis of textbook contents resulted in fairly high correlations with student performance at the item level in TIMSS 1999. This implies that even a quite simple analysis of te…

PARSI
2012
A usual target of automatic assessment in CS education has been a computer program or some other software engineering product. In this paper, we describe the 'PARSI' tool that is used for the automatic assessment of stylistic and technical correctness of office documents and some basic IT skills such as email netiquette and email lists usage. The PARSI tool enables us to run a highly populated course with only one teacher, and investigate how we could make such a course a flexible learning experience where learners take an active role.

Young athletes’ significant experiences in sport : critical sociological reflections on athlete development
2017
AbstractThe aim of this article is to provide a sociological perspective on athlete development by using the theoretical framework of socialization and life course. Significant experiences are used as an interpretational tool to study young athletes’ perceptions of their socialization process. The research data, which were collected at a sports upper secondary school, consist of life historical interviews with 26 young athletes aged 14–17 years. Through content analysis, their significant experiences in sports were divided into four categories and then analyzed further in relation to the Habermasian dualistic reality of the lifeworld and the system. The results were the following. First, no…
The unspeakable through the works of some contemporary Spanish composers
2016
The concept of unspeakable, as complex as it may be, can base itself on an experience of the sensitive, and find a common context in the events exceeding the limit and pointing a certain chaos. Those of the Spanish Civil War have constituted, by numerous aspects, examples of these unthinkable excesses. The impact of the environment on the creators has been heard in the thematic traces which are imperative in the works composed on the themes of death, violence or war: from the sound phenomena, some figures making sensitive the exceeding of the limit and chaotic connotation have been highlighted and echo what is beyond belief, as the destruction of man or the inaudibility of death. These figu…
Is translation an autopoietic system?
2010
Translation is analyzed from the standpoint of its systemic properties. Translation is shown to have the capacity to observe itself and its difference from the environment. Observation being a major autopoietic factor, translation may be considered as an autopoietic system. Doubts about this hypothesis arise because of the peculiarities of communicative properties of translation. Translation plays the role of the mediating party in complex translation communication events and its communicative behavior is ‘defective’ in that translation does not act upon source messages because its communicative function is passing messages on to the target party. As a system, translation may be studied aga…
Slacking Off or Winding Down? An Experience Sampling Study on the Drivers and Consequences of Media Use for Recovery Versus Procrastination
2016
Today's constant availability of media content provides users with various recreational resources. It may also challenge self-control, however, once media exposure conflicts with other goals and obligations. How media users deal with these self-regulatory chances and risks in their daily lives is largely unknown. Our study addressed the predictors and consequences of recreational and procrastinatory media use using experience sampling methodology (N = 215; 1,094 media use episodes). Results suggest that trait (self-control, performance goal orientation) as well as state variables (exhaustion) are significant predictors of media use for recovery versus procrastination. Whereas recreational m…

Hélène Lenoir presents in the first of her novels, Bourrasque, a distinctive and characteristic vision of time within her fictional universe. Through various stylistic techniques, the…
