Lamella-forming ABC triblock terpolymers are convenient building blocks for the synthesis of soft Janus nanoparticles (JNPs) by crosslinking the B domain that is “sandwiched” between A and C lamellae. Despite thorough synthetic variation of the B fraction to control the geometry of the sandwiched microphase, so far only Janus spheres, cylinders, and sheets have been obtained. In this combined theoretical and experimental work, we show that the blending of polybutadiene homopolymer (hPB) into lamella morphologies of polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-polymethylmethacrylate (SBM) triblock terpolymers allows the continuous tuning of the polybutadiene (PB) microphase. We systematically vary …
Effects of a macroscopic fixed charge inhomogeneity on some membrane transport properties
1991
Abstract The effects that a macroscopic fixed charge inhomogeneity exerts on some membrane transport properties have been theoretically analyzed. To this end, we introduce two particular inhomogeneous fixed charge distributions on the basis of previous experimental work, and the transport equations are assumed to be the Nernst-Planck equations. It is found that a macroscopic redistribution of a constant quantity of fixed charge groups can modify the observed transport properties, the two inhomogeneous membranes here considered exhibiting permselectivities different from those of otherwise identical homogeneous membranes. Although the main emphasis of the study is on the basic aspects of tra…
The Multilevel Model in the Computer-Generated Appraisal: A Case in Palermo
2017
The construction of a mass appraisal model requires the preliminary study of the real estate market, the sampling of sold properties, the development of a forecasting model and the verification of the appraisal results. They are generally computerised methods, that work with geo-referenced data. This experimental work has proceeded to build a mass appraisal model, collecting a data sample of sales of apartments in the city of Palermo, in the five years 2008–2012, using a multivariate statistical model (multilevel), testing the results and providing the operating applications in a scheme of online real estate valuations.
Influence of Heat Treatment on Fatigue Crack Growth in Ti-6Al-4V Alloy
2011
The paper contains the results of experimental work carried out in order to analyse the initiation and propagation of fatigue cracks in Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy. The tests were performed on plane specimens with the stress concentrators in form of one-sided sharp notches. The tested specimens were made of the oxygenated Ti-6Al-4V subjected to various variants of heat treatment.
A critical analysis on the friction modelling in orthogonal machining
2007
Abstract Despite the development of high performance finite element-based codes, the simulation of machining still represents a very hard task due to the geometric complexity of the real chip-tool systems and the high cutting speed that requires very long simulation times. For these reasons, many aspects related to machining are not very clear and so easy to simulate. In this paper a rigorous investigation on the role played by the implemented friction model within a 2D simulation of orthogonal cutting was carried out, taking into account different models proposed by the researchers in the last years. The main simulation results were compared with experimental measurements in order to verif…
Solvent structure and dynamics: How relevant to molecular and quantum pharmacology?
1989
A close scrutiny of the relationship between geometric constraints and motion in a system of water molecules allows the prediction of a role of solvent dynamics in the solvent-mediated interaction between two solutes and between different parts of one solute. The predicted mechanism is cooperative, and its operation is widely supported by experiments (not only by our group) in which solvent dynamics were modulated by isotopic or cosolvent perturbations. More recent experimental work by our group and simulation work of MCY water by Fornili et al, strengthens this evidence and visualizes how an immobilized water molecule can “seed” or “pin” a high-connectivity patch of H bonds. Involvement of…
Molecular polarizability of Scn, Cn and endohedral Scn@Cm clusters
2002
The interacting induced dipoles polarization model implemented in the program POLAR is used for the calculation of the molecular dipole-dipole polarizability . The method is tested with Sc1-Sc7, Sc12, Sc17, Sc74, C, C12, C60, C70, C82-fullerene, Sc@C60, Sc@C82, Sc2@C82, Sc3@C82, C1-C6, C10, C13, C16, C19, C22, C24, C42, C54, C84 and C96-graphite clusters. The polarizability is an important quantity for the identification of clusters with different numbers of atoms and even for the separation of isomers. The results for the polarizability are of the same order of magnitude as reference calculations performed with another program based on the same formulation. The bulk limit for the polarizab…
Modified Donnan phenomena in polyaniline with poly(vinyl sulphonate) chains
1993
We develop a physical model, based on the modified Donnan phenomena ideas introduced previously by the authors, to describe the acid doping of the conducting polymer polyaniline. The theory is motivated by the experimental work of Asturias et al. [Ber. Bunsenges. Phys. Chem. 95, 1381 (1991)]. Good agreement between theory and experiment is found.
Roots Characteristics of a flexible and mature vegetation: Preliminary results of experimental investigation in a meandering laboratory flume
2018
Vegetation controls sediment dynamics and affects the kinematic characteristics of flow in rivers. The uprooting mechanism is strongly affected by mechanical properties, morphology and branching of the roots system. This work presents preliminary results of experimental work conducted in a laboratory meandering flume. The work aims to investigate how the geometrical and mechanical characteristics of the roots of a real, flexible and mature vegetation could vary along the bend. Results show that both the geometrical and the mechanical characteristics of the roots assume higher/lower values in peculiar sections of the bend suggesting that they could be affected by the kinematic characteristic…
International Society for Extracellular Vesicles: first annual meeting, April 17-21, 2012: ISEV-2012
2012
Extracellular micro- and nano-scale membrane vesicles produced by different cells are recognized as an essential entity of physiological fluids in a variety of organisms and function as mediators of intercellular communication employed for the regulation of multiple systemic and local processes. In the last decade, an exponential amount of experimental work was dedicated to exploring the biogenesis and secretion mechanisms, physiological and pathological functions and potential applications of the extracellular vesicles (EVs). Noteworthy is the large heterogeneity of in vitro and in vivo models applied, technical approaches developed in these studies and the diversity of designations assign…
