Optically pumped Cs magnetometers enabling a high-sensitivity search for the neutron electric dipole moment

2020

An array of 16 laser-pumped scalar Cs magnetometers was part of the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) experiment taking data at the Paul Scherrer Institute in 2015 and 2016. It was deployed to measure the gradients of the experiment's magnetic field and to monitor their temporal evolution. The originality of the array lies in its compact design, in which a single near-infrared diode laser drives all magnetometers that are located in a high-vacuum chamber, with a selection of the sensors mounted on a high-voltage electrode. We describe details of the Cs sensors' construction and modes of operation, emphasizing the accuracy and sensitivity of the magnetic-field readout. We present two app…

First measurement of proton's charge form factor at very low $Q^2$ with initial state radiation

2017

We report on a new experimental method based on initial-state radiation (ISR) in e-p scattering, in which the radiative tail of the elastic e-p peak contains information on the proton charge form factor ($G_E^p$) at extremely small $Q^2$. The ISR technique was validated in a dedicated experiment using the spectrometers of the A1-Collaboration at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI). This provided first measurements of $G_E^p$ for $0.001\leq Q^2\leq 0.004 (GeV/c)^2$.

Reassigning the shapes of the 0+ states in the 186Pb nucleus

2022

Across the physics disciplines, the 186Pb nucleus is the only known system, where the two first excited states, together with the ground state, form a triplet of zero-spin states assigned with prolate, oblate and spherical shapes. Here we report on a precision measurement where the properties of collective transitions in 186Pb were determined in a simultaneous in-beam γ-ray and electron spectroscopy experiment employing the recoil-decay tagging technique. The feeding of the 0+2 state and the interband 2+2→2+1 transition have been observed. We also present direct measurement of the energies of the electric monopole transitions from the excited 0+ states to the 0+ ground state. In contrast to…

Multiplicity dependence of π, K, and p production in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV

2020

This paper presents the measurements of π±, K±, p and p¯¯¯ transverse momentum (pT) spectra as a function of charged-particle multiplicity density in proton–proton (pp) collisions at s√ = 13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. Such study allows us to isolate the center-of-mass energy dependence of light-flavour particle production. The measurements reported here cover a pT range from 0.1 to 20 GeV/c and are done in the rapidity interval |y|<0.5. The pT-differential particle ratios exhibit an evolution with multiplicity, similar to that observed in pp collisions at s√ = 7 TeV, which is qualitatively described by some of the hydrodynamical and pQCD-inspired models discussed in this paper.…

Final results on 82Se double beta decay to the ground state of 82Kr from the NEMO-3 experiment

2018

Using data from the NEMO-3 experiment, we have measured the two-neutrino double beta decay (2νββ) half-life of 82Se as T2ν1/2=[9.39±0.17( stat )±0.58( syst )]×1019 y under the single-state dominance hypothesis for this nuclear transition. The corresponding nuclear matrix element is ∣∣M2ν∣∣=0.0498±0.0016. In addition, a search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) using 0.93 kg of 82Se observed for a total of 5.25 y has been conducted and no evidence for a signal has been found. The resulting half-life limit of T0ν1/2>2.5×1023 y (90% C.L. ) for the light neutrino exchange mechanism leads to a constraint on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of ⟨mν⟩<(1.2−3.0) eV , where the range reflec…

Charged-particle production as a function of multiplicity and transverse spherocity in pp collisions at √s = 5.02 and 13 TeV

2019

We present a study of the inclusive chargedparticle transverse momentum (pT) spectra as a function of charged-particle multiplicity density at mid-pseudorapidity, dNch/dη, in pp collisions at √s = 5.02 and 13 TeV covering the kinematic range |η| 0). The pT spectra are reported for two multiplicity estimators covering different pseudorapidity regions. The pT spectra normalized to that for INEL > 0 show little energy dependence. Moreover, the high-pT yields of charged particles increase faster than the charged-particle multiplicity density. The average pT as a function of multiplicity and transverse spherocity is reported for pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV. For low- (high-) spherocity events, c…

Differentiating among pragmatic uses of words through timed sensicality judgments

2013

Pragmatic and cognitive accounts of figurative language posit a difference between metaphor and metonymy in terms of underlying conceptual operations. Recently, other pragmatic uses of words have been accounted for in the Relevance Theory framework, such as approximation, described in terms of conceptual adjustment that varies in degree and direction with respect to the case of metaphor. Despite the theoretical distinctions, there is very poor experimental evidence addressing the metaphor/metonymy distinction, and none concerning approximation. Here we used meticulously built materials to investigate the interpretation mechanisms of these three phenomena through timed sensicality judgments.…
