Design optimization of mooring system: An application to a vessel-shaped offshore fish farm

Abstract Design optimization of mooring systems of offshore floating structures is a challenging task, partly because of the large number of design variables, complicated design constraints, nonlinear system behavior, and time-consuming numerical simulations. For engineering designs, efficient yet accurate approaches are needed. This paper proposes an integrated optimization methodology for design of mooring systems. The methodology integrates the design of experiments, screening analysis, time-domain simulations, and a metamodel-based optimization procedure. Abstract Faults diagnosis in air conditioning systems is a crucial activity, since malfunctions may induce heavy degradation of performance. Among the available techniques, thermoeconomic diagnosis has played a marginal role due to the difficulties encountered when applying the methodology to refrigeration plants. In this paper a critical analysis on capabilities and limits of thermoeconomic diagnosis is proposed. The rheology of three-phase suspensions at low bubble capillary number

We develop a model for the rheology of a three-phase suspension of bubbles and particles in a Newtonian liquid undergoing steady flow. We adopt an 'effective-medium' approach in which the bubbly liquid is treated as a continuous medium which suspends the particles. The resulting three-phase model combines separate two-phase models for bubble suspension rheology and particle suspension rheology, which are taken from the literature. The model is validated against new experimental data for three-phase suspensions of bubbles and spherical particles, collected in the low bubble capillary number regime. Searching for sterile neutrino with X-ray intensity mapping

The cosmological X-ray emission associated to the possible radiative decay of sterile neutrinos is composed by a collection of lines at different energies. For a given mass, each line corresponds to a given redshift. In this work, we cross correlate such line emission with catalogs of galaxies tracing the dark matter distribution at different redshifts. We derive observational prospects by correlating the X-ray sky that will be probed by the eROSITA and Athena missions with current and near future photometric and spectroscopic galaxy surveys. A relevant and unexplored fraction of the parameter space of sterile neutrinos can be probed by this technique.

Supply chain modelling and analysis: an application of Latin square to a repeated coupling of non-linear differential equations

In the last 50 years, Forrester’s system dynamics techniques have been adopted to analyse problems and find solutions for global supply chains. An important topic in production-inventory system modelling is the design of experiment. The aim of this paper is to present an application of a statistical technique of design of experiment, the Latin Square Design, to set a combination of input values for the initial-value problem of non-linear repeated coupling of first-order differential equations modelling a production-inventory system. This design permits to reduce the number of experiments while allowing statistical analysis for testing the significance of the studied parameters.

Relationship between N-cycling communities and ecosystem functioning in a 50-year-old fertilization experiment.

The relative importance of size and composition of microbial communities in ecosystem functioning is poorly understood. Here, we investigated how community composition and size of selected functional guilds in the nitrogen cycle correlated with agroecosystem functioning, which was defined as microbial process rates, total crop yield and nitrogen content in the crop. Soil was sampled from a 50-year fertilizer trial and the treatments comprised unfertilized bare fallow, unfertilized with crop, and plots with crop fertilized with calcium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, solid cattle manure or sewage sludge. Warmer climates boost cyanobacterial dominance in shallow lakes

Dominance by cyanobacteria hampers human use of lakes and reservoirs worldwide. Previous studies indicate that excessive nutrient loading and warmer conditions promote dominance by cyanobacteria, but evidence from global scale field data has so far been scarce. Our analysis, based on a study of 143 lakes along a latitudinal transect ranging from subarctic Europe to southern South America, shows that although warmer climates do not result in higher overall phytoplankton biomass, the percentage of the total phytoplankton biovolume attributable to cyanobacteria increases steeply with temperature.
