Application of Neural Networks and Expert Systems in a hierarchical approach to the intelligent greenhouse control
2003
A novelty methodology based on the hierarchical combination of neural networks and expert systems is proposed in a centralized approach for the intelligent greenhouse control. The knowledge-based system is in charge of carrying out the determination of PH land value, composition, carbonic anhydride artificial atmosphere, external and internal temperature, wind and humidity measurements. From the results obtained, and by means of a neural network developed and trained for this application, the land quality is evaluated. On the other hand, the expert system, apart from supervising the system function and implementing fault tolerance mechanisms, performs the opportune actions in function of th…
An expert system for vineyard management based upon ubiquitous network technologies
2011
Vineyard operations for quality wines production are currently based upon costly and time-consuming manual sampling operations required to assess the maturity phases of grapevines. The ripening process however is significantly influenced by the environmental parameters which nowadays can be effectively monitored by means of ubiquitous computing technologies. Besides the possibility of gathering data, hence, suitable tools are required to support the vineyard management process. The present research concerns the development of an expert system to effectively manage the vineyard operations. The methodology is based on the analysis of the time series of indices related to the maturation phases…
A multi-agent system for managing adverse weather situations on the road network
2010
The development of traffic management and control strategies to improve traffic flows and road safety is necessary due to the high dynamism of traffic flows. The use of distributed intelligent systems can help the traffic organizations and the road operators to cope with possible incidents on the road network, especially when the incidents are related to adverse meteorological conditions. In that case, the probability of road accidents is increased due to the difficulty of driving under bad weather conditions. So, if the operators detect any meteorological incident, they must decide how to deal with it in order to improve traffic safety. In this paper we introduce a new multiagent system (M…
Assessing Software Replacement Success: An Industrial Case Study Applying Four Approaches
2006
This paper describes an industrial case study assessing software replacement success and other effects. The target of assessments has been a large commercial legacy system for customer register management. The success of its replacement by its performed rewrite has been assessed via four approaches concerning: user satisfaction, strengths and problems of the system, problem surveillance and expert judgments. The approaches and metrics have been selected in cooperation with industrial experts in order that they would meet the needs of their organization. The assessments have been conducted by comparing the situations before and after the rewrite. They have included quality aspects. The appli…
CAD-Based Training of an Expert System and a Hidden Markov Model for Obstacle Detection in an Industrial Robot Environment
2012
Abstract Deploying industrial robots in harsh outdoor environments require additional functionalities not currently provided. For instance, movement of standard industrial robots are pre-programmed to avoid collision. In dynamic and less structured environments, however, the need for online detection and avoidance of unmodelled objects arises. This paper focus on online obstacle detection using a laser sensor by proposing three different approaches, namely a CAD-based Expert System (ES) and two probabilistic methods based on a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) which requires observation based training. In addition, this paper contributes by providing a comparison between the CAD-based ES and the tw…
Application of distributed expert systems to the advanced control of smart houses
2003
Abstract A distributed expert system has been proposed for the smart house control. Its configuration is mainly based on the use of distributed nodes connected by means of a CAN network. This kind of systems allow the implementation of highly flexible control systems capable of adapting themselves to different situations. The expert system used is based on Rule Nets (RN), which are a formalism that seeks to express an automatism in a similar way to as would make it a human being: "IF antecedents THEN consequents". But at the same time Rule nets are a tool for the design, analysis and implementation of rule based systems (RBS), and consist on a mathematic-logical structure which analytically…

An expert system hybrid architecture to support experiment management
2014
Specific expert systems are used for supporting, speeding-up and adding precision to in silico experimentation in many domains. In particular, many experimentalists exhibit a growing interest in workflow management systems for making a pipeline of experiments. Unfortunately, these type of systems does not integrate a systematic approach or a support component for the workflow composition/reuse. For this reason, in this paper we propose a knowledge-based hybrid architecture for designing expert systems that are able to support experiment management. This architecture defines a reference cognitive space and a proper ontology that describe the state of a problem by means of three different per…
PA 05-3-0690 Mavie-lab sports: a mhealth for injury prevention and risk management in sport
2018
Computational advances in smart-phone technology and the development of expert systems has been an opportunity to devise the MAVIE-Lab an innovative Mobile Health Application (mHealth) for primary prevention of Home, Leisure and Sport Injuries (HLIs). Here, we present MAVIE-Lab Sports, the first module of the application focused on sports injuries. MAVIE-Lab was developed in the framework of the MAVIE project. A large web-based cohort launched with the objective of prospectively collecting data related to HLIs. A sample size of 26 000 volunteers have been already enrolled in this cohort and the ultimate goal is to recruit 1 00 000 participants in France. As a first step, the MAVIE-Lab will …
ATLAS technical coordination expert system
2019
When planning an intervention on a complex experiment like ATLAS, the detailed knowledge of the system under intervention and of the interconnection with all the other systems is mandatory. In order to improve the understanding of the parties involved in an intervention, a rule-based expert system has been developed. On the one hand this helps to recognise dependencies that are not always evident and on the other hand it facilitates communication between experts with different backgrounds by translating between vocabularies of specific domains. To simulate an event this tool combines information from different areas such as detector control (DCS) and safety (DSS) systems, gas, cooling, vent…
