Self-discrepancy and impulse buying: an exploratory study

Nowadays, consumer behavior is more sophisticated and complex than before. In this study, I attempt to analyze the relationship between impulse buying (consumerʼs emotional side of the consumption) and an individualʼs self-discrepancy (the difference between what one is and what one would like to be). I propose that a consumer uses impulse buying to lift oneʼs self up and remove oneʼs self-discrepancy. Results from a sample of consumers in Spain established that a consumer experienced self-discrepancy was likely to have impulse buying. Participants (N = 360; 7–11-year-old; mean age = 10.36, SD = .85) were shown photographs presenting a target character (ingroup or outgroup) engaging in a positive behavior (e.g., a helping action) or a negative behavior (e.g., an aggressive action). The simple bone cyst, as newly classified by WHO in 2005, is a lesion related to the jawbones. Therefore, it is not a cyst, since it is a cavity devoid of epithelial tissue. It is a rare pathology affecting the mandible more than the maxilla. Its onset occurs mainly during the first two decades of life, irrespective of sex. Motivating Low-Achievers—Relative Performance Feedback in Primary Schools

Abstract Relative performance feedback (RPF) has often been shown to improve effort and performance in the workplace and educational settings. Yet, many studies also document substantial negative effects of RPF, in particular for low-achievers. We study a novel type of RPF designed to overcome these negative effects of RPF on low-achievers by scoring individual performance improvements. With a sample of 400 children, we conduct a class-wise randomized-controlled trial using an e-learning software in regular teaching lessons in primary schools. Stimulus-induced gamma activity in the electrocorticogram of freely moving rats: the neuronal signature of novelty detection.

To investigate the cortical activity pattern associated with the exploration and identification of a novel object we recorded the intracranial electrocorticogram (ECoG) in the barrel cortex of freely moving adult rats using wireless technology. We report here that the exploration and detection of a novel object correlate with a transient increase of synchronized oscillatory activity in the 40–47 Hz frequency band. This specific cortical activity pattern occurs 200–300 ms after the first sensory contact with the novel stimulus and decreases in power in the subsequent recording sessions with the same object. Blind Mexican cave fish (Anoptichthys jordani) were released into unknown surroundings and their swimming tracks were recorded. During the first 24 h in a new tank, i.e., in unfamiliar environments, the average swimming velocity of the fish was higher than during the remaining time in the tank. Collision with obstacles was recorded by an electrical contact detection method. Single frame analysis of video-recordings revealed that collision can be correlated with tail movements when the fish is close to an obstacle, whereas avoidance correlates with gliding during approach to an obstacle. The aim of this paper is to study the regional inequalities in the enlarged European Union using Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis applied to per capita GDP for 258 regions of EU27 over the period 1995-2000. Strong evidence in favor of global and local autocorrelation as well as spatial heterogeneity is found for the wealth distribution. We also show that the enlargement process leads to a new North-West - East polarization scheme instead of the previous results obtained in the literature highlighting a North-South polarization scheme. Implications for regional development and cohesion policies are finally explored.

Abstract Liking for a sweet, salty or fatty diet may induce overconsumption of simple carbohydrates, sodium or lipids. Measuring overall liking of the corresponding sensory sensations contributes to understanding the determinants of dietary behaviours.
