Molecular Classification of 5-Amino-2-Aroylquinolines and 4-Aroyl-6,7,8-Trimethoxyquinolines as Highly Potent Tubulin Polymerization Inhibitors
2013
Algorithms for classification and taxonomy are proposed based on criteria as information entropy and its production. It is classified a series of 5-amino-2-aroylquinolines (AAQs) and 4-aroyl-6,7,8-trimethoxyquinolines (TMQs) combretastatin analogues for anti-cancer activity. 5-Amino-6-methoxy-2-aroylquinoline AAQ showed anti-proliferative activity more potent as compared to combretastatin A-4 (CA4), against various human cancer cell lines and a multidrug resistance (MDR) cancer cell line. On the basis of AAQ/TMQ structure–activity relationship new derivatives are designed. The AAQs/TMQs are classified using nine characteristic chemical properties in molecules. Many classification algorithms…
The 15 March 2007 explosive crisis at Stromboli Volcano, Italy: assessing physical parameters through a multidisciplinary approach
2011
Basaltic volcanoes are dominated by lava emission and mild explosive activity. Nevertheless, many basaltic systems exhibit, from time to time, poorly documented and little-understood violent explosions. A short-lived, multiblast explosive crisis (paroxysmal explosion) occurred on 15 March 2007 during an effusive eruptive crisis at Stromboli (Italy). The explosive crisis, which started at 20:38:14 UT, had a total duration of ∼5 min. The combined use of multiparametric data collected by the permanent instrumental networks (seismic, acoustic, and thermal records) and a field survey carried out immediately after the event enabled us to constrain the eruptive dynamics and quantify physical param…
Hub-Centered Gene Network Reconstruction Using Automatic Relevance Determination
2012
Network inference deals with the reconstruction of biological networks from experimental data. A variety of different reverse engineering techniques are available; they differ in the underlying assumptions and mathematical models used. One common problem for all approaches stems from the complexity of the task, due to the combinatorial explosion of different network topologies for increasing network size. To handle this problem, constraints are frequently used, for example on the node degree, number of edges, or constraints on regulation functions between network components. We propose to exploit topological considerations in the inference of gene regulatory networks. Such systems are often…
Contribution to the development and the improvement of a digital model of the human body biofidelic HUByx by numerical methods for impact applications
2017
The study of human tolerance thresholds to impacts requires experiments on living or post mortem human subjects, which naturally raises ethical questions. To overcome these limitations, the development of numerical tools has led over the last few years to the implementation of numerical models more or less capable to accurately reproduce the mechanical behavior of the human body when subjected to various types of stresses. It is in this context that the numerical model HUByx (Hermaphrodite Biomechanics yx-model) has been developed within the research department COMM of the ICB lab at UTBM. This PhD work aims at validating and improving the biofidelity of the thoracic part of the HUByx model…
The Oblivion of Demography in Sustainability’s Studies
2017
Determining the explosion risk level and the explosion hazard area for a group of natural gas wells
2016
Starting from the fact that the natural gas engineering profession is generally associated with a high occupational risk, the current paper aims to help increase the safety of natural gas wells and reduce the risk of work-related accidents, as well as the occurrence of professional illnesses, by applying an assessment method that has proven its efficiency in other industrial areas in combination with a computer-aided design software. More specifically, the paper focuses on two main research directions: assessing the explosion risk for employees working at natural gas wells and indicating areas with a higher explosion hazard by using a modern software that allows their presentation in 3D. Th…
A Hybrid Machine Learning and Knowledge Based Approach to Limit Combinatorial Explosion in Biodegradation Prediction
2016
One of the main tasks in chemical industry regarding the sustainability of a product is the prediction of its environmental fate, i.e., its degradation products and pathways. Current methods for the prediction of biodegradation products and pathways of organic environmental pollutants either do not take into account domain knowledge or do not provide probability estimates. In this chapter, we propose a hybrid knowledge-based and machine learning-based approach to overcome these limitations in the context of the University of Minnesota Pathway Prediction System (UM-PPS). The proposed solution performs relative reasoning in a machine learning framework, and obtains one probability estimate fo…
Lignin from steam‐exploded wood as binder in wood composites
2010
A study demonstrating the approach of zero‐waste technologies, a component of the Zero Emissions concept, and using lignin extracted from steam‐exploded wood as adhesive in hot‐pressed fibre boards and plywood to substitute phenol‐formaldehyde resins is reported. Properties of sample boards containing different amount of lignin adhesive are compared between themselves and with the EU standards for fibre boards. A strong correlation of density and form stability under humid conditions with the lignin content is found. Results of testing mechanical properties of the boards suggest that effect of lignin on mechanical strength depends on the size of particles and hot‐pressing temperature. Steam…
Biogas production and saccharification of Salix pretreated at different steam explosion conditions.
2011
Abstract Different steam explosion conditions were applied to Salix chips and the effect of this pretreatment was evaluated by running both enzymatic hydrolysis and biogas tests. Total enzymatic release of glucose and xylose increased with pretreatment harshness, with maximum values being obtained after pretreatment for 10 min at 210 °C. Harsher pretreatment conditions did not increase glucose release, led to degradation of xylose and to formation of furfurals. Samples pretreated at 220 and 230 °C initially showed low production of biogas, probably because of inhibitors produced during the pretreatment, but the microbial community was able to adapt and showed high final biogas production. I…
Papel de la Demografía en la Transición a Sociedades Sostenibles
2020
Abstract: Currently, although the global population has surpassed 7.5 billion and continues to increase in about 80 million each year, attention to demography is almost absent in most of the studies and publications related to the current situation of planetary emergency and the necessary transition to sustainable societies. For this reason, our first aim in this paper has been to discuss if this current lack of attention to demography is justified or not. With this purpose, we begin considering the scientific meaning of Sustainability, in order to overlay distorted and impoverish views of this concept that may hinder our study. Then, we analyse the reasons given by experts for and against …
