KOSMOS 2018 Gran Canaria mesocosm study: water column biogeochemistry
2021
The data set compiles biogeochemical water column collected during a KOSMOS mesocosm experiment carried out in the frame work of the Ocean Artificial Upwelling project. The experiment was performed in the North-East Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Gran Canaria in autumn 2018 and lasted for 39 days. In this study we investigated the effect of different intensities of artificial upwelling combined with two upwelling modes (recurring additions versus one singular addition) on POC export and its potential transfer efficiency to depth. The data set includes the amounts of surface water that were exchanged with nutrient-rich deep water (from ~300 m depth), primary production and chlorophyll a, el…
KOSMOS 2018 Gran Canaria mesocosm study: particle flux data from sediment trap
2021
The data set compiles sinking flux data collected during a KOSMOS mesocosm experiment carried out in the frame work of the Ocean Artificial Upwelling project. The data set includes the amounts of surface water that were exchanged with nutrient-rich deep water (from ~300 m depth). It also contains particle flux data, i.e. POC flux…
Conditional Random Quantities and Compounds of Conditionals
2013
In this paper we consider finite conditional random quantities and conditional previsions assessments in the setting of coherence. We use a suitable representation for conditional random quantities; in particular the indicator of a conditional event $E|H$ is looked at as a three-valued quantity with values 1, or 0, or $p$, where $p$ is the probability of $E|H$. We introduce a notion of iterated conditional random quantity of the form $(X|H)|K$ defined as a suitable conditional random quantity, which coincides with $X|HK$ when $H \subseteq K$. Based on a recent paper by S. Kaufmann, we introduce a notion of conjunction of two conditional events and then we analyze it in the setting of cohere…
Eiropas Savienības Baltijas Jūras Reģiona divējādas nozīmes preču eksporta kontroles integrācija
2019
Darbs apskata Eiropas Savienības Baltijas jūras reģiona divējādas nozīmes preču eksporta kontroles integrāciju. Šīs jomas integrācija tika salīdzināta ar neofunkcionālisma un liberālās starpvaldības integrācijas teorijas modeļiem, lai noskaidrotu, kura no šīm teorijām labāk spēj paskaidrot divējādas nozīmes preču eksporta kontroles integrācijas procesu Eiropas Savienībā. Integrāciju teorijas modeļi tika pārbaudīti trīs aspektos, to spējā paskaidrot divējādas nozīmes preču eksporta kontroles integrācijas vēsturi, to spējā paskaidrot aktoru uzvedību pie pastāvošajām atšķirībām dalībvalstu likumdošanā un to spējā paskaidrot aktoru uzvedību pie atšķirībām riska uztverē starp dalībvalstīm. Lai n…
Finnish Shipping — A Nordic Exception?
2012
The Finnish economy has for centuries been dependent on seaborne transport. In some periods, such as the mid-nineteenth century and the 1970s, Finland also emerged as an important shipping nation in international cross-trades. In the mid-1970s, Finnish tonnage was the sixth largest in the world in per capita terms — just after the Scandinavian countries (Karonen, 1992; Kaukiainen, 2008b). Nevertheless, compared to the other Nordic countries, it was a minor player in international shipping and, subsequently, it has fallen even further behind. In 1987, for example, the freight earnings of Finnish shipping were about one-fifth of those of Norway and about one-third of those of Denmark and Swed…
Challenges of nation-branding for stimulation of Latvian exports
2017
Abstract The presented research aims to contribute to the conceptualisation of the nation-brand of Latvia with the purpose of stimulation of national export performance. The subject of the research is three aspects presumably challenging the branding of Latvia with reference to national export development. The investigated challenges are the barriers and opportunities for green-branding of Latvia; the absence of the generally accepted indication of the geographical identity of the Baltic region; and the contradictable popular image of Latvia as a cheap country. The research poses two research questions inquiring into the issues of nation-branding of Latvia currently being faced in the conte…
European Union's Competitiveness and Export Performance in Context of EU – Russia Political and Economic Sanctions
2015
Abstract This paper aims to explore performance of European Union's export in context of competitiveness targets enclosed in Europe 2020 strategy. Authors are addressing recent geo-political events regarding EU-Russia political and economic sanctions. Authors evaluate only economic results from sanctions and do not make an analysis of the nature of political sanctions. Paper gives an overview of the European Union trade performance within last 15 years and makes detailed analysis of the trade structure. Further, authors address European Union – Russia trade and nature of the trade. At the end of the article authors evaluate impact of the sanctions that took effect within a last year.
Multidimensional financial development, exporter behavior and export diversification
2020
Financial development shapes export sector performance because exporters need external finance and face credit constraints. Previous empirical research has relied largely on single-country studies. The Exporter Dynamics Database (EDD), which features firm-level exports from over 60 countries, reveals differences in the microstructure of the export sector across countries. In this paper, we first provide new evidence that these differences are related to cross-country variation in financial development and structure. Second, we combine the EDD and multidimensional data on financial development with a global database on export diversification. This study is the first to examine how macrolevel…
Effects of the European Monetary Union on High-Technology Exports
2021
AbstractOur study estimates the effects of the European Monetary Union (EMU) on high-technology (HT) export and assesses the potential knowledge spillovers of such trade. Irrespective of the importance of the HT trade channel, none of the previous studies in the literature focus on the effects of a common currency on HT trade. Increasing trade in the HT sector may lead to more efficient use of resources and help countries to move towards a knowledge-based economy. Moreover, it may lead to higher overall growth. After considering multilateral resistances, pair fixed effects and bias correction in the preferred (three-way bias-corrected) model, EMU membership becomes negative and statisticall…
