Phononic heat transport in the transient regime: An analytic solution
2016
We investigate the time-resolved quantum transport properties of phonons in arbitrary harmonic systems connected to phonon baths at different temperatures. We obtain a closed analytic expression of the time-dependent one-particle reduced density matrix by explicitly solving the equations of motion for the nonequilibrium Green's function. This is achieved through a well-controlled approximation of the frequency-dependent bath self-energy. Our result allows for exploring transient oscillations and relaxation times of local heat currents, and correctly reduces to an earlier known result in the steady-state limit. We apply the formalism to atomic chains, and benchmark the validity of the approx…
Pho85 and PI(4,5)P(2) regulate different lipid metabolic pathways in response to cold
2019
Lipid homeostasis allows cells to adjust membrane biophysical properties in response to changes in environmental conditions. In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a downward shift in temperature from an optimal reduces membrane fluidity, which triggers a lipid remodeling of the plasma membrane. How changes in membrane fluidity are perceived, and how the abundance and composition of different lipid classes is properly balanced, remain largely unknown. Here, we show that the levels of phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate [PI(4,5)P2], the most abundant plasma membrane phosphoinositide, drop rapidly in response to a downward shift in temperature. This change triggers a signaling cascade trans…
Differential gene expression in p53-mediated G(1) arrest of human fibroblasts after gamma-irradiation or N-phosphoacetyl-L-aspartate treatment.
2000
In human fibroblasts, N:-phosphoacetyl-L-aspartate (PALA) and gamma-radiation induce reversible and irreversible p53-mediated G(1) cell cycle arrest, respectively. By coupling the premature chromosome condensation technique to fluorescence in situ hybridization, we found no evidence of DNA damage after PALA treatment. We used representational difference analysis (cDNA-RDA) to study changes in gene expression after PALA treatment and gamma-radiation in normal human fibroblasts. The mammary-derived growth inhibitor (MDGI) gene was expressed in PALA-treated cells. Ectopic MDGI expression arrested PALA-treated but not irradiated RKO cells. Expression of an antisense RNA against MDGI resulted in…
AAV-Mediated Clarin-1 Expression in the Mouse Retina: Implications for USH3A Gene Therapy
2015
Usher syndrome type III (USH3A) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in clarin-1 (CLRN1) gene, leading to progressive retinal degeneration and sensorineural deafness. Efforts to develop therapies for preventing photoreceptor cell loss are hampered by the lack of a retinal phenotype in the existing USH3 mouse models and by conflicting reports regarding the endogenous retinal localization of clarin-1, a transmembrane protein of unknown function. In this study, we used an AAV-based approach to express CLRN1 in the mouse retina in order to determine the pattern of its subcellular localization in different cell types. We found that all major classes of retinal cells express AAV…
What ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ are the στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου?
2014
The expression τὰ στοιχεῖα τοῦ κόσμου is one of the most discussed, and most disputed, phrases in Galatians. In the following article, insight into the meaning of this phrase is sought by first of all clarifying and summarising the full scope of issues which must be explained by any interpretation of the phrase. Such a summary overview has often not appeared in various scholarly discussions. Subsequently, the primary proposed interpretations are discussed with the argument ultimately being made that it is Paul’s conception of ‘the world’ which provides the key to a solution to the interpretive conundrum that best satisfies the entire context of Paul’s letter and argument.
Kullback-Leibler distance as a measure of the information filtered from multivariate data
2007
We show that the Kullback-Leibler distance is a good measure of the statistical uncertainty of correlation matrices estimated by using a finite set of data. For correlation matrices of multivariate Gaussian variables we analytically determine the expected values of the Kullback-Leibler distance of a sample correlation matrix from a reference model and we show that the expected values are known also when the specific model is unknown. We propose to make use of the Kullback-Leibler distance to estimate the information extracted from a correlation matrix by correlation filtering procedures. We also show how to use this distance to measure the stability of filtering procedures with respect to s…
Removal of Resonances
2001
From the perturbative procedure in the last chapter we have learned that in the proximity of resonances of the unperturbed system, resonant denominators appear in the expression for the adiabatic invariants. We now wish to begin to locally remove such resonances by trying, with the help of a canonical transformation, to go to a coordinate system which rotates with the resonant frequency.
Analytical and Semi-Analytical Solutions for the Force Between Circular Loops in Parallel Planes
2013
Closed-form solutions are presented for the force between noncoaxial coplanar circular current loops. A semi-analytical solution is given for the case where the loops lie in parallel planes. Numerical results are given which cross check these solutions against each other and against an independently developed method. The closed form solution for the force between a circular loop and a coaxial circular arc segment is also given.
Tenth Peregrine breather solution to the NLS equation
2015
We go on in this paper, in the study of the solutions of the focusing NLS equation. With a new representation given in a preceding paper, a very compact formulation without limit as a quotient of two determinants, we construct the Peregrine breather of order N=10. The explicit analytical expression of the Akhmediev's solution is completely given.
Intraband and interband spin-orbit torques in noncentrosymmetric ferromagnets
2015
Intraband and interband contributions to the current-driven spin-orbit torque in magnetic materials lacking inversion symmetry are theoretically studied using Kubo formula. In addition to the current-driven field-like torque ${\bf T}_{\rm FL}= \tau_{\rm FL}{\bf m}\times{\bf u}_{\rm so}$ (${\bf u}_{\rm so}$ being a unit vector determined by the symmetry of the spin-orbit coupling), we explore the intrinsic contribution arising from impurity-independent interband transitions and producing an anti-damping-like torque of the form ${\bf T}_{\rm DL}= \tau_{\rm DL}{\bf m}\times({\bf u}_{\rm so}\times{\bf m})$. Analytical expressions are obtained in the model case of a magnetic Rashba two-dimension…
