SUPRACONDYLAR FEMORAL FRACTURE WITH AN INCIDENTAL ENCHONDROMA OF THE TIBIAL PLATEAU

2019

The enchondroma is a benign tumor of the endosteal cartilage and it is common in young-adult patients. These tumors are usually diagnosed when a pathologic fracture occurs at the site of the lesion or when they are accidentally discovered during investigations performed for other reasons. This report describes the case of a patient with an enchondroma of the external tibial plateau. Diagnosis was made treating an ipsilateral supracondylar femoral fracture caused by a traffic accident.

THE CHALLENGE OF OPEN TIBIAL SHAFT FRACTURES: WHEN TOMANAGE WITH EXTERNAL FIXATION AND WHEN TO USEINTRAMEDULLARY NAILING?

2020

Treatment of open tibial shaft fractures is challenging. External fixation (EF) is comparatively safe in treating these open injuries with the main advantages of easy application, minimal additional disruption, and convenient subsequent soft tissue repair. Tibial intramedullary nailing (IM) is optimal for the treatment of open tibial fractures. This study aims to report the outcomes of our multi-center experience in the management of open tibial shaft fractures, evaluating the efficacy and safety of using either the external fixation (EF) or intramedullary nailing (IM).In this study, clinical-radiographic results were evaluated in 26 cases of open fractures treated with an external fixator …

Amazon's initiative transforming a non-contact society : Digital disruption leads the way to stakeholder capitalization

2021

Contrary to the decisive role of R&D centered on information and communication technology (ICT) in the digital economy, its excessive expansion has resulted in declining productivity due to the two-faced nature of ICT. Consequently, the novel concept emerges of innovation that maintains sustainable growth by harnessing the vigor of soft innovation resources (SIRs). Pioneering endeavors can be observed at the forefront of the global ICT leaders. World R&D leader Amazon has been harnessing the power of users that seek SIRs. This functions as a virtuous cycle, leading to the transformation of R&D by fusing a unique R&D system with a sophisticated financing system. With this orchestration, Amaz…

Quality of Life in European Older Adults of SHARE Wave 7: Comparing the Old and the Oldest-Old

2021

CASP-12 (Control, Autonomy, Self-realization, and Pleasure scale) is one of the most common internationally used measures for quality of life in older adults, although its structure is not clearly established. Current research aims to test the factor structure of the CASP-12, so as to provide evidence on reliability and external validity, and to test for measurement invariance across age groups. Data from 61,355 Europeans (≥60 years old) from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe wave 7 were used. CASP-12, EURO-D (European depression scale), self-perceived health, and life satisfaction measurements were included. Reliability and validity coefficients, competing confirmatory …

Understanding the price drivers of successful apps in the mobile app market

2016

In this paper, we take the perspective of app developers. Specifically, based on a sample of top paid apps from three major app stores, i.e., App Store, Google Play, and Blackberry World, we construct a hedonic price model to examine the role of relevant factors in price formation in the app market. Our results suggest a strong evidence of two-sided market effects. In fact, the lower price charged for apps operating as two-sided markets reflect the strategy of subsidising users, due to the positive cross-side externalities they exert on valuable third parties. Surprisingly, the effects of trialability, in-app purchase and mechanisms to build reputation are not significant in the context of …

ICT for external use in Croatian four- and five-star hotels

2016

The Purpose – The objective of the paper is to examine the implementation of advanced technology and promotional supports in hotel companies and to compare their performance in four- and five-star hotels. More specifically, ICT for external use are analysed, i.e. customer relationship management (CRM), communication with customers, promotional supports, and online order receptions. Design/Methodology/Approach – The empirical research took place in 38 upscale (26 four and 12 five-star) hotels located in Croatia, in the regions of Dalmatia, Istria, and Kvarner, and in the city of Zagreb. The data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered mainly during personal interviews …

Trait driving anger and driving styles among Colombian professional drivers

2019

Abstract This study analyzes the association between trait driving anger and driving styles in a sample of Colombian professional drivers. Additionally, the internal and external validity of the Deffenbacher's Driving Anger Scale (DAS-14) was examined in the study population. The DAS-14 and the Spanish Version of the Multidimensional Driving Style Inventory (S-MDSI) were administered to 492 urban bus and taxi operators. Average trait driving anger scores in the study population were similar to those reported in previous validation studies from Spain, Argentina, China, and Malaysia. After deleting three cross-loaded items, confirmatory factor analyses revealed a three-dimensional latent stru…

Importance of considering interoceptive abilities in alexithymia assessment

2019

Background Recent studies have shown that people with high alexithymia scores have decreased interoceptive abilities, which can be associated with psychological and physical disorders. Early assessments of the alexithymia trait included the evaluation of these abilities through the dimension measuring the difficulty in identifying and distinguishing between feelings and bodily sensations (the 26-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale; TAS-26). The revised version of the TAS, the TAS-20, contains a three-factor solution that does not involve a dimension assessing interoceptive abilities. However, the three items allowing the evaluation of these abilities are still present in the TAS-20. In this con…

Externalizing behavior problems and interest in reading as predictors of later reading skills and educational aspirations

2017

This study examined the developments in children’s externalizing problems and interest in reading during their first four years of school (Grades 1–4) and investigated whether this development predicted the children’s Grade 6 reading skills and educational aspirations. Data comprised (1) teachers’ ratings of externalizing problems and children’s (N = 642; 43% girls) self-ratings of their interest in reading, collected between Grades 1 and 4, and (2) measures of reading fluency and comprehension, and children’s self-reports of educational aspirations, collected at Grade 6. First, latent growth modeling showed that a higher level of externalizing problems in Grade 1 was associated with a lowe…

Reply: Externalities and citation practices

2016

Dr. Shiri raises some important questions on the results in our short report "Externalities and article citations: experience of a national public health journal (Gaceta Sanitaria)"[1]. We welcome any debate on the topic of citations research because little evidence is available on this topic and exchange between readers, authors, and editors contributes to enrich this discussion.
