Primary stabilization was performed in 72 tibial fractures with sever open (n = 37) or closed (n = 35) soft tissue injury using unreamed interlocking nails. In 60 (83%) cases the fractures healed without additional procedures. There were 2 cases of osteitis, but both these fractures healed after removal of the nail or after reamed nailing. In 9 patients with delayed union reamed nailing (n = 8) or bone grafting (n = 1) led to healing. In 1 patient with hypertrophic pseudarthrosis, union was achieved after substitution of a reamed nail for the anreamed nail. The infection rate was similar to that observed with external fixation. Bone defects represent the main challenging problem for the orthopedic surgeon and, consequently, they increase the duration of hospitalization, risk of complications and health expenditures. The aim of our observational, descriptive and retrospective study is to evaluate the outcomes of patients treated with a monolateral external fixator for bone defects greater than 3 cm. Material and methods. Between January 2003 and January 2013, 21 patients were treated at our center by bone transfer with a monolateral external fixator. The personality of pelvic fractures in the elderly differs in many ways from pelvic ring lesions in adults. Only high-energy trauma leads to pelvic ring disruptions. Concomitant lesions of the soft tissues occur frequently. In the elderly, low-energy falls are the rule. The most important symptom is pain, which restricts mobility. Hemodynamic instability in fragility fractures of the pelvis is rare. Emergency stabilization with pelvic binders or sheets, C-clamping or emergency external fixation are not needed. After arthroplasty, arthrodesis of the ankle joint is the most common method to treat advanced ankle osteoarthritis. The goal of the study was to assess the subjective and objective outcomes in 2 different types of fixation for ankle joint arthrodesis. We retrospectively assessed 47 patients who had undergone ankle joint arthrodesis with fixation either via an Ilizarov apparatus (group 1) (n = 21) or cannulated screws (group 2) (n = 26).
