On thermoeconomics of energy systems at variable load conditions: integrated optimization of plant design and operation
2007
Abstract Thermoeconomics has been assuming a growing role among the disciplines oriented to the analysis of energy systems, its different methodologies allowing solution of problems in the fields of cost accounting, plant design optimisation and diagnostic of malfunctions. However, the thermoeconomic methodologies as such are particularly appropriate to analyse large industrial systems at steady or quasi-steady operation, but they can be hardly applied to small to medium scale units operating in unsteady conditions to cover a variable energy demand. In this paper, the fundamentals of thermoeconomics for systems operated at variable load are discussed, examining the cost formation process an…
THE ECONOMIC VALUE OF THE EXTERNALITIES ASSOCIATED WITH CULTURAL GOODS
2001
This study examined the economic value of the externalities associated with cultural goods. The purpose of this study is to clarify the willingness to pay to maintain the Central Finland museum of the ones which had filled a 18 year of Jyväskylä inhabitants and of factors which affect a payment willingness. From dichotomous choice valuation (DC-method) data we have estimated the cumulative probability density function (cdf). From estimated cdf we can calculate welfare measures such as median of the estimated distribution of CV. The study found firstly that the surplus of the consumer is thus 1.17 MFIM measured on the basis of the median value. In the respondents' opinion the value of the C…
The Self-expression Motivational System
2016
The main aim of this chapter is to introduce and promote the concept of self-expression as a basic motivation. Considering that the amount of literature on self-expression, matched with the concepts of control and affiliation, is practically non-existent, the chapter starts by attempting to provide a viable definition of self-expression motivation. Furthermore, the concept of art as a domain in which the underlying tendency for self-expression is clearly manifested is also considered. The chapter also includes a literature review to show whether or not self-expression motivation is able to fulfil the criteria suggested by Baumeister and Leary (Psychological Bulletin, 117, 497–529, 1995). Th…

Nitric oxide radicals are emitted by wasp eggs to kill mold fungi
2019
Detrimental microbes caused the evolution of a great diversity of antimicrobial defenses in plants and animals. Insects developing underground seem particularly threatened. Here we show that the eggs of a solitary digger wasp, the European beewolf Philanthus triangulum, emit large amounts of gaseous nitric oxide (NO⋅) to protect themselves and their provisions, paralyzed honeybees, against mold fungi. We provide evidence that a NO-synthase (NOS) is involved in the generation of the extraordinary concentrations of nitrogen radicals in brood cells (~1500 ppm NO⋅ and its oxidation product NO2⋅). Sequencing of the beewolf NOS gene revealed no conspicuous differences to related species. However,…
A systematic review on external ear melanoma
2014
Summary Background External ear melanoma accounts for only 1% of all cutaneous melanomas, and data on its optimal management and prognosis are limited. Aim We aim to review the literature on external ear melanoma to guide surgeons in the treatment of this uncommon and peculiar pathology. Materials and methods A systematic review of English language studies on ear melanoma published from 1993 to 2013 was performed using the PubMed electronic database. Data on epidemiology, oncological treatment (tumor resection and regional lymph nodes management), and reconstruction were extrapolated from selected papers. Results The total number of patients was 858 (30 studies). The helix was the most comm…
Hydraulic power and control system
2020
Abstract In recent years, there has been worldwide interest in the improvement of the mobility of people with lower-limb amputation. Despite significant developments in new technologies during the last decade, commercial below-knee and above-knee prostheses are still energetically passive devices. However, many locomotive functions, like walking up stairs and slopes, need significant power in the knee and ankle joints. The additional power for doing previously mentioned activities needs to be achieved by means of external energy sources, which should be integral prosthetic components. In this chapter the design and development of the hydraulic power and control system are described.
The challenge of open tibial shaft fractures: When tomanage with external fixation and when to useintramedullary nailing?
2020
Treatment of open tibial shaft fractures is challenging. External fixation (EF) is comparatively safe in treating these open injuries with the main advantages of easy application, minimal additional disruption, and convenient subsequent soft tissue repair. Tibial intramedullary nailing (IM) is optimal for the treatment of open tibial fractures. This study aims to report the outcomes of our multi-center experience in the management of open tibial shaft fractures, evaluating the efficacy and safety of using either the external fixation (EF) or intramedullary nailing (IM).In this study, clinical-radiographic results were evaluated in 26 cases of open fractures treated with an external fixator …
Biomechanical aspects of external root resorption in orthodontic therapy
2007
External apical root resorption is a common phenomenon associated with orthodontic treatment. The factors relevant to root resorption can be divided into biological and mechanical factors. Some mechanical and biological factors might be associated with an increased or decreased risk of root resorption during orthodontic treatment. For mechanical factors, the extensive tooth movement, root torque and intrusive forces, movement type, orthodontic force magnitude, duration and type of force are involved. For biological factors, a genetic susceptibility, systemic disease, gender and medication intake have been demonstrated influence root resorption. Orthodontic therapy of patients with increased…
