Use of Biostimulants for Organic Apple Production: Effects on Tree Growth, Yield, and Fruit Quality at Harvest and During Storage

2018

The experiment was conducted during two consecutive seasons (years 2016 and 2017) in an organic apple orchard of the cultivar Jonathan. Several biostimulants were tested (10 in total), including humic acids, macro and micro seaweed extracts, alfalfa protein hydrolysate, amino acids alone or in combination with zinc, B-group vitamins, chitosan and a commercial product containing silicon. Treatments were performed at weekly intervals, starting from the end of May until mid-August. The macroseaweed extract was effective in stimulate tree growth potential in both years, as shown by a significantly larger leaf area (+20% as compared to control) and by an higher chlorophyll content and leaf photo…

Environmental Aspect Concerning Phthalates Contamination: Analytical Approaches and Assessment of Biomonitoring in the Aquatic Environment

2023

This review is a survey of recent progress in studies concerning the impact of phthalic acid esters in aquatic organisms. After introducing the classification, properties, sources, fate, and toxic effects related to phthalates, an overview of the techniques of extraction and analysis of these substances is provided. As a result, the general concepts of environmental bioindicators, biomonitoring systems, and other concepts related to phthalate contamination in the aquatic environment are presented. Recent bioaccumulation data of different phthalates are summarised in a table and organised according to the type of organism, tissue, and geographical area of sampling. Bioindicator organisms tha…

Community Analysis of Culturable Sapwood Endophytes from Apulian Olive Varieties with Different Susceptibility to Xylella fastidiosa

2021

Endophytes are symptomless fungal and/or bacterial microorganisms found in almost all living plant species. The symbiotic association with their host plants by colonizing the internal tissues has endowed them as a valuable tool to suppress diseases, stimulate growth, and promote stress resistance. In this context, the study of culturable endophytes residing the sapwood of Apulian olives might be a promising control strategy for xylem colonizing pathogens as Xylella fastidiosa. To date, olive sapwood cultivable endophytes are still under exploration; therefore, this work pursues a study of cultivable endophytes occurrence variation in the sapwood of different olive varieties under the effect…

An Integrated Method for Image Retrieval

1995

This paper presents an information fusion method for image retrieval; the retrieval strategy is based on statistical and geometrical features extracted from sub-images. Our goal is to find a set of best similar images related to a prototype image; this goal may be obtained according to image content rather than symbolic attributes. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) images and astronomical images have been adopted to test the method. Main steps of the procedure to retrieve images are: (l) Segmentation, (2) Matching, and (3) Decision. The first step involves four clusters co-operating segmentation algorithms; in the matching step, a sets of candidate similar images is provided; finally an info…

Gel de Clorhexidina intra-alveolar en la prevención de la alveolitis tras la extracción de terceros molares inferiores: Estudio piloto

2006

Purpose: Chlorhexidine is a good prophylactic agent for post-extraction dry socket alveolitis. The bio-adhesive 0.2% chlorhexidine gel could improve this action since its intra-alveolar positioning would allow a more direct action on the alveolus and more prolonged action of the medication. Materials and Method: We present a single blind, randomised study on 30 patients to evaluate the efficacy of the bio-adhesive 0.2% chlorhexidine gel, placed only once within the alveolus, on the reduction of the incidence of impacted third molar postextraction dry socket alveolitis and its post-operative effects on patients. Results. A reduction of 42.65% in the occurrence of alveolitis and a more favour…

Laboratory evaluation of the effect of plant extracts on Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acariformes, Tetranychidae)

2005

Acetone extracts of Annona cherimola Mill., Melia azedarach L., Artemisia absinthium L. and Quassia spp., were tested in laboratory trials on young females of Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acariformes,Tetranychidae). In the post-infestation tests, extracts of Melia and Annona caused a high mortality of the target females (84% and 96% for Melia and Annona, respectively) after 24 hours and 100% for both extracts after 48 hours. On the other hand Artemisia extracts caused 84% mortality of females after 10 days even if the oviposition rate was statistically lower than in the controls (2.5 and 6.7 eggs/female/day for Artemisia and controls, respectively).

Productive Efficiency of Decanters with Short and Variable Dynamic Pressure Cones

2003

Abstract This paper presents the results of experimental trials carried out on third-generation, variable dynamic pressure cone decanters to assess machine performance and adjust the process parameters for optimum extraction yield. The results obtained led to the following conclusions: the regulation of the differential velocity screw/bowl allows a better performance of the decanter at low dilutions of the olive paste; it is possible to obtain high efficiency at a low dilution of the olive paste achieving a higher minor compounds content and the more advanced system of regulation leads to better results according to the variations of the ratio between liquid and solid phases, thus optimisin…

Extraction Methods of Essential Oils From Herbs and Spices

2017

International audience; This chapter describes both conventional and non‐conventional extraction methods of essential oils (EOs) from herbs and spices. Although hydrodistillation, steam distillation and solvent extraction are the most applied methods, several non‐conventional technologies have been evaluated, especially in respect to EO recovery, and a great potential has been attributed to these non‐conventional methods. For instance, ultrasound, microwave, supercritical fluid, pulsed electric fields, ohmic‐heating and microwave (MW) extraction techniques applied alone or combined with other techniques are potent tools to obtain EOs in a 'green' way from natural resources such as aromatic …
