Citrus aurantium L. Active Constituents, Biological Effects and Extraction Methods. An Updated Review
2021
Citrus genus is a prominent staple crop globally. Long-term breeding and much hybridization engendered a myriad of species, each characterized by a specific metabolism generating different secondary metabolites. Citrus aurantium L., commonly recognized as sour or bitter orange, can exceptionally be distinguished from other Citrus species by unique characteristics. It is a fruit with distinctive flavor, rich in nutrients and phytochemicals which possess different health benefits. This paper presents an overview of the most recent studies done on the matter. It intends to provide an in-depth understanding of the biological activities and medicinal uses of active constituents existing in C. au…
Procedures for Antibiotic Residues in Bovine Muscle Tissues
2011
Abstract Acetonitrile extraction followed by primary-secondary amine dispersive SPE cleanup QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe), was compared to pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) using water at 70°C for 10 min at 1500 psi for the determination of 16 veterinary drugs in bovine muscle tissues by LC/MS/MS. PLE was significantly more effective for the extraction of veterinary drugs (ranging from 69 to 103% with RSD ≤ 18%) than QuEChERS (ranging from 19 to 89% with RSD ≤ 19%). Linearity of the calibration curves was obtained over the range considered (from 10 μg/kg or LOQ to 1000, μg/kg) with r2 ≥ 0.99 for all the analytes by both methods. Although an internal standard w…
Innovative technologies for the recovery of phytochemicals from Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni leaves: A review.
2018
Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni has gained increased industrial and scientific interests in the last 20 years, representing a suitable nutritional alternative to sucrose and artificial sweeteners. Moreover, this plant contains polyphenols, chlorophylls, and carotenoids that may be extracted for production of nutraceuticals and functional foods. Because of nutritional and technological advantages over sucrose, innovative approaches for the extraction of highly valued compounds from Stevia leaves have been developed and optimized. In contrast to conventional alternatives, innovative extraction methods allow higher yields in a shorter time, less usage of organic solvents, and reduced energy consumpt…
Activity and activation state of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase of spruce trees with varying degrees of damage relative to the occurrence of n…
1989
The aim was to determine whether a reduced carboxylation efficiency in needles of damaged spruce trees (Picea abies), is derived from a direct impairment of the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBP carboxylase) or there is an indirect inhibition of the RuBP carboxylase. In 1985, 1986 and 1987 measurements of RuBP carboxylase activity were carried out at three locations. Trees of different ages and degrees of damage were examined. RuBP carboxylase was assayed using both a rapid extraction method to determine the initial activity and an in vitro test after total activation to determine the total activity. The activation state was calculated as the ratio of initial activity to total act…
Optic disc positioning and blood vessels extraction on eye fundus
2009
This paper presents two methods aimed to the optic disc positioning on the retinal images. The first is based on a template of the entire image, while the second is based on the retinal vascularisation. For this second task, also a vessel extraction method is provided. Both the algorithm have been tested on test images of the Drive Database.
Application of an inexpensive and high-throughput genomic DNA extraction method for the molecular ecology of zooplanktonic diapausing eggs
2008
We describe the application of a simple, low-cost, and effective method of DNA extraction (hot sodium hydroxide and Tris, HotSHOT) to the diapausing propagules of continental aquatic invertebrates for its use in PCR amplification. We illustrate the use of the technique in cladocerans, rotifers, anostracans, notostracans, and copepod diapausing eggs. We compare the performance of the HotSHOT technique to the currently most widely used method for DNA extraction of zooplankton eggs and individuals, the chelating resin (or Chelex) technique. The HotSHOT technique overcomes several of the problems posed by Chelex and permits easy optimization for its use with 96-well plates for high-throughput D…
Effect of different processing methods on the quality of obtained pomegranate juice
2019
Pomegranate juice has many health properties as the fruits contain anticarcinogenic, antimicrobial and antiviral compounds. Its consumption has greatly increased throughout the world in recent years due to the potential of its different components, polyphenols and anthocyanins mostly. Many studies have been performed on the pomegranate juice yield demonstrating its influence on the organoleptic and physicochemical properties of the juice. Commercial pomegranate juice production involves pressing the fruits. As a consequence, there is a need to investigate the pressing machine types and adjustment in order to maximize juice yield and enhance its health properties. The aim of this study was t…
Comparison of extraction methods for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon determination in sediments
1990
Different sample preparation methods for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in lake and river sediments were compared and evaluated. Freeze‐dried sediment materials were e...
EXTRACTION OF BIOLOGICALLY ACTIVE COMPONENTS FROM FRESHWATER SAPROPEL
2019
Sapropel has been used for different purposes - in agriculture as fertilizer, in construction as building material, in cosmetic products, in balneology also in medicine and pharmaceuticals as bioactive component. Previously sapropel has been commonly used in raw form and there is no general accepted method or standard method for obtaining sapropel extract. However, most extraction methods follow the same path. Currently, there are few extraction methods using several extractants for obtaining bioactive components from raw sapropel. The most commonly used extractant is alkaline solution. When sapropel is subjected to alkaline environment, the humic and fulvic acids, together with some lipids…
ChemInform Abstract: Chemical Compounds and Toxicological Assessments of Drinking Water Stored in Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Bottles: A Source …
2012
A declaration of conformity according to European regulation No. 10/2011 is required to ensure the safety of plastic materials in contact with foodstuffs. This regulation established a positive list of substances that are authorized for use in plastic materials. Some compounds are subject to restrictions and/or specifications according to their toxicological data. Despite this, the analysis of PET reveals some non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) produced by authorized initial reactants and additives. Genotoxic and estrogenic activities in PET-bottled water have been reported. Chemical mixtures in bottled water have been suggested as the source of these toxicological effects. Furthermo…
