Application of machine learning techniques to analyse the effects of physical exercise in ventricular fibrillation
2014
This work presents the application of machine learning techniques to analyse the influence of physical exercise in the physiological properties of the heart, during ventricular fibrillation. To this end, different kinds of classifiers (linear and neural models) are used to classify between trained and sedentary rabbit hearts. The use of those classifiers in combination with a wrapper feature selection algorithm allows to extract knowledge about the most relevant features in the problem. The obtained results show that neural models outperform linear classifiers (better performance indices and a better dimensionality reduction). The most relevant features to describe the benefits of physical …
Discrimination of retinal images containing bright lesions using sparse coded features and SVM
2015
Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is a chronic progressive disease of the retinal microvasculature which is among the major causes of vision loss in the world. The diagnosis of DR is based on the detection of retinal lesions such as microaneurysms, exudates and drusen in retinal images acquired by a fundus camera. However, bright lesions such as exudates and drusen share similar appearances while being signs of different diseases. Therefore, discriminating between different types of lesions is of interest for improving screening performances. In this paper, we propose to use sparse coding techniques for retinal images classification. In particular, we are interested in discriminating between retina…
Up to a quarter of patients with osteonecrosis of the jaw associated with antiresorptive agents remain undiagnosed
2014
AbstractRecent data suggest that the traditional definition of bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) may exclude patients who present with the non-exposed variant of the condition. To test the hypothesis that a proportion of patients with ONJ remain undiagnosed because their symptoms do not conform to the traditional case definition, we did a secondary analysis of data from MISSION (Multicentre study on phenotype, definition and classification of osteonecrosis of the jaws associated with bisphosphonates), a cross-sectional study of a large population of patients with bisphosphonate-associated ONJ who were recruited in 13 European centres. Patients with exposed and non-exp…
Determination of microcystins in biological samples by matrix solid-phase dispersion and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry
2005
A method for the detection and quantification of the microcystins (MCs)-MC-LR, MC-RR and MC-YR-in biological samples by matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) has been developed. The optimum extraction conditions were 500 mg of liver or kidney, C18 bonded silica as dispersant, and a mixture methanol-water (70:30) as eluent. The MCs were determined by liquid chromatography electrospray mass spectrometry (LC/ES/MS). Recoveries of biological extracts at three different spiked levels (1-10 mg kg(-1)) ranged from 40.5 to 87.0% in liver, and from 52.5 to 74.5 in kidney. R.S.D.s were < 15.6% and < 10.6%, respectively. The detection and quantification limits were 0.05 and 0.5 mg kg(-1), for all MCs. …
Cardiovascular and ocular safety of α1-adrenoceptor antagonists in the treatment of male lower urinary tract symptoms
2014
α1-Adrenoceptor antagonists (α-blockers) represent first-line drug treatment for male lower urinary tract symptoms. Their adverse events (AEs) include asthenia, dizziness, nasal congestion, arterial (orthostatic) hypotension and intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS).This report focuses on cardiovascular and ocular AEs of α-blockers as related to their mechanism of action and subtype selectivity. The incidence of hypotension differs between α-blockers. It is greatest with doxazosin or terazosin, but others including tamsulosin can also lead to hypotension especially upon treatment initiation. Concomitant antihypertensive medication increases the incidence of hypotension with some α-block…
Quantitative Spatial Analysis of the Mouse Brain Lipidome by Pressurized Liquid Extraction Surface Analysis
2014
Here we describe a novel surface sampling technique termed pressurized liquid extraction surface analysis (PLESA), which in combination with a dedicated high-resolution shotgun lipidomics routine enables both quantification and in-depth structural characterization of molecular lipid species extracted directly from tissue sections. PLESA uses a sealed and pressurized sampling probe that enables the use of chloroform-containing extraction solvents for efficient in situ lipid microextraction with a spatial resolution of 400 μm. Quantification of lipid species is achieved by the inclusion of internal lipid standards in the extraction solvent. The analysis of lipid microextracts by nanoelectrosp…
Determination of benzophenone-3 and its main metabolites in human serum by dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction followed by liquid chromatography…
2013
A new analytical method for the determination of benzophenone-3 (2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone), and its main metabolites (2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone and 2,2'-dihydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone) in human serum is presented. The method is based on dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) as preconcentration and clean-up technique, followed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Acidic hydrolysis and protein precipitation with HCl 6 M (1:1) (100 °C, 1 h) were carried out before extraction. The variables involved in the DLLME process were studied. Under the optimized conditions, 70 µL of acetone (disperser solvent) and 30 µL of chloroform (extraction solvent) were …

Effect of the local administration of betamethasone on pain, swelling and trismus after impacted lower third molar extraction. A randomized, triple b…
2013
Objectives: The aim of this study is to compare the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of the local postoperative administration of a single 12-mg dose of betamethasone after the surgical removal of impacted lower third molars. Study Design: A split-mouth, triple-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial of 25 patients requiring the surgical removal of symmetrical lower third molars was performed. In the experimental side, a 12-mg dose of betamethasone was administered submucosally after the surgical procedure, while in the control side a placebo (sterile saline solution) was injected in the same area. To assess postoperative pain, visual analogue scales and the consumption …
Effects of localmelatonin application on post-extraction sockets after third molar surgery: a pilot study
2014
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the anti-inflammatory, analgesic and osteogenic early effects of melatonin on post-extraction sockets ofpatients requiring third molars extraction. Study Design: A randomized, triple-blind clinical trial was made using a split-mouth design. Both lower third molars of 10 patients were extracted and 3 mg of local melatonin or placebo were applied. Concentrations of interleukin-6 and nitrotyrosine were determined on samples of the clot from the socket by independent ELISA tests. Radiographic bone density was evaluated by measuring Hounsfield Units in panoramic and cross sections obtained by digital scanner. Statistycal analysis by Kolmogorov-…
