2021

Background There are no studies that have systematically reviewed randomized control trials and/or prospective cohort studies that have assessed the significance of temporary skeletal mini-screw anchorage devices (TSAD) for the correction of gummy-smile. The aim of the present systematic review was to assess the significance of non-surgical correction of gummy smile using TSAD. Material and methods The addressed focused question was "Are temporary skeletal mini-screw anchorage devices effective for the correction of gummy smile?" Indexed databases were searched up to and including May 2020. Different combinations of the following key-indexing terms were used: anchorage; gummy smile, mini-sc…

Criteria for the prescription of oral bisphosphonates for the treatment of osteoporosis in a series of women referred for tooth extraction

2012

Objective: To evaluate the criteria for the prescription of oral bisphosphonates (OB) in a series of women with osteoporosis referred for tooth extraction. Study design: The study included 38 postmenopausal women on treatment with OBs. The following variables were analysed: age, weight, height, type of OB and duration of treatment, bone densitometry and risk factors for osteoporosis. In addition, the osteoporosis self-assessment tool (OST) was administered and collagen type I C-telopeptide (CTX) levels were measured. Results: Bone densitometry had only been performed in six patients (15.7%) before starting OB treatment. Based on the results of the OST, nine (23.6%) of the participants prese…

Water Extract of Cryphaea heteromalla (Hedw.) D. Mohr Bryophyte as a Natural Powerful Source of Biologically Active Compounds

2019

Bryophytes comprise of the mosses, liverworts, and hornworts. Cryphaea heteromalla, (Hedw.) D. Mohr, is a non-vascular lower plant belonging to mosses group. To the date, the most chemically characterized species belong to the liverworts, while only 3.2% and 8.8% of the species belonging to the mosses and hornworts, respectively, have been investigated. In this work, we present Folin–Ciocalteu and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) data related to crude extracts of C. heteromalla obtained by three di erent extraction solvents: pure water (WT), methanol:water (80:20 v/v) (MET), and ethanol:water (80:20 v/v) (ETH). The water extract proved to be the best solvent showing the highest con…

Water as a Solvent of Election for Obtaining Oleuropein-Rich Extracts from Olive (Olea europaea) Leaves

2021

Leaves from Olea europaea represent one of the main by-products of the olive oil industry, containing a plethora of bioactive compounds with several promising activities for human health. An organic solvent-free extraction method was developed for the recovery of olive leaf phenols, which obtained an extract containing oleuropein in high amounts. A comparison of various extraction media is reported, together with the total phenolic content, DPPH (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) content, ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity), and polyphenol oxidase activity of the corresponding extracts. The polyphenol profiles and content of the most representative extracts have also been studied. Extrac…

Suitability Of Cellular Network Signaling Data For Origin-Destination Matrix Construction: A Case Study Of Lyon Region (France)

2019

TRB 2019, 98th Annual Meeting Transportation Research Board, Washigton, D.C., ETATS-UNIS, 13-/01/2019 - 17/01/2019; Spatiotemporal data, and more specifically origin-destination matrices, are critical inputs to mobility studies for transportation planning and urban management purposes. In this paper, we propose a methodology to infer origin-destination (O-D) matrices based on passively-collected cellular signaling data of millions of anonymized mobile phone users in the Rhône-Alpes region, France. This dataset, which consists of records time-stamped with users' unique identifier and tower locations, is used to first analyze the cell phone activity degree indicators of each user in orde…

Design of experiment approach for the optimization of polybrominated diphenyl ethers determination in fine airborne particulate matter by microwave-a…

2015

Abstract A sensitive and selective procedure for the determination of 12 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (BDE-28, BDE-49, BDE-47, BDE-66, BDE-100, BDE-119, BDE-99, BDE-155, BDE-154, BDE-153, BDE-139 and BDE-183) in airbone particulate matter (PM2.5) at trace level has been developed. The proposed method includes extraction PM2.5-bound PBDEs by microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) followed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) clean-up and determination by GC-MS/MS using a programmed temperature vaporizer (PTV) in large volume injection (LVI) mode to introduce the sample to the chromatographic system. A design of experiment (DoE) approach was used for the optimization of large volume injectio…

Recovery of colorants from red prickly pear peels and pulps enhanced by pulsed electric field and ultrasound

2016

Abstract The aim of this work was to evaluate the potential of the non-conventional pre-treatments; pulsed electric fields (PEFs) and ultrasounds (USNs), to enhance the extraction of red colorants from red prickly pear ( Opuntia stricta Haw.) peels and pulps. The overall goal was to valorize the thick part of the fruit, being discarded for fruit's consumption. PEF and USN treatments were first optimized using fruit slices, followed by a supplementary aqueous extraction (+ SAE) up to 1 h. The optimal conditions were then applied for peels and pulps, separately. Results showed that PEF + SAE and USN + SAE enhanced significantly the extraction of red colorants (betanin/isobetanin), compared to…

Influence of Geographical Location of Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) on the Recovery of Bioactive Compounds Assisted by Pulsed Electric Fields

2022

Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) has been consumed by humans since ancient times. It is rich in high added-value compounds such as chlorophylls, carotenoids and polyphenols. Pulsed electric fields (PEF) is an innovative non-thermal technique that improves the extraction of bioactive compounds from diverse sources. PEF pre-treatment (3 kV/cm, 100 kJ/kg) combined with supplementary extraction with binary solvents at different times was evaluated to obtain the optimal conditions for extraction. In addition, the results obtained were compared with conventional treatment (without PEF pre-treatment and constant shaking) and different strains of Spirulina from diverse geographical locations. Green Extraction of Polyphenols from Waste Bentonite to Produce Functional Antioxidant Excipients for Cosmetic and Pharmaceutical Purposes: A Waste-t…

2022

In an ever-growing perspective of circular economy, the development of conscious, sustainable and environmental-friendly strategies to recycle the waste products is the key point. The scope of this work was to validate the waste bentonite from the grape processing industries as a precious matrix to extract polyphenols by applying a waste-to-market approach aimed at producing novel functional excipients. The waste bentonite was recovered after the fining process and opportunely pre-treated. Subsequently, both the freeze dried and the so-called “wet” bentonites were subjected to maceration. PEG200 and Propylene Glycol were selected as solvents due to their ability to dissolve poly…
