Silica Materials Containing Cyclodextrin for Pollutant Removal
2018
This chapter reviews the use of cyclodextrin-silica hybrid systems and cyclodextrin-functionalized silica used as adsorbents or filters for the removal of inorganic and organic pollutants from aqueous solutions in solid-phase extraction and adsorption-oriented processes. Actually, there is a need to develop efficient processes for the synthesis and application of multifunctional silica-based materials for pollutant removal by adsorption or filtration, and for sample purification and concentration using solid-phase extraction.
Modulation of physical and biological properties of a composite PLLA and polyaspartamide derivative obtained via thermally induced phase separation (…
2016
Abstract In the present study, blend of poly l -lactic acid (PLLA) with a graft copolymer based on α,β-poly(N-hydroxyethyl)- dl -aspartamide and PLA named PHEA-PLA, has been used to design porous scaffold by using Thermally Induced Phase Separation (TIPS) technique. Starting from a homogeneous ternary solution of polymers, dioxane and deionised water, PLLA/PHEA-PLA porous foams have been produced by varying the polymers concentration and de-mixing temperature in metastable region. Results have shown that scaffolds prepared with a polymer concentration of 4% and de-mixing temperature of 22.5 °C are the best among those assessed, due to their optimal pore size and interconnection. SEM and DSC…

Automatic Segmentation Using a Hybrid Dense Network Integrated With an 3D-Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling Module for Computed Tomography (CT) Imaging
2020
Computed tomography (CT) with a contrast-enhanced imaging technique is extensively proposed for the assessment and segmentation of multiple organs, especially organs at risk. It is an important factor involved in the decision making in clinical applications. Automatic segmentation and extraction of abdominal organs, such as thoracic organs at risk, from CT images are challenging tasks due to the low contrast of pixel values surrounding other organs. Various deep learning models based on 2D and 3D convolutional neural networks have been proposed for the segmentation of medical images because of their automatic feature extraction capability based on large labeled datasets. In this paper, we p…
The BioDICE Taverna plugin for clustering and visualization of biological data: a workflow for molecular compounds exploration
2014
Background: In many experimental pipelines, clustering of multidimensional biological datasets is used to detect hidden structures in unlabelled input data. Taverna is a popular workflow management system that is used to design and execute scientific workflows and aid in silico experimentation. The availability of fast unsupervised methods for clustering and visualization in the Taverna platform is important to support a data-driven scientific discovery in complex and explorative bioinformatics applications. Results: This work presents a Taverna plugin, the Biological Data Interactive Clustering Explorer (BioDICE), that performs clustering of high-dimensional biological data and provides a …
Analysis of computer user behavior, security incidents and fraud using Self-Organizing Maps
2019
Abstract This paper addresses several topics of great interest in computer security in recent years: computer users’ behavior, security incidents and fraud exposure on the Internet, due to their high economic and social cost. Traditional research has been based mainly on gathering information about security incidents and fraud through surveys. The novelty of the present study is given by the use of Self-Organizing Maps (SOMs), a visual data mining technique. SOMs are applied to two data sets acquired using two different methodologies for collecting data about computer security. First, a traditional online survey about fraud exposure, security and user behavior was used. Second, in addition …
Semantic sense extraction from Wikipedia pages
2010
This paper presents a technique aimed to extract structured information from unstructured Wikipedia contents related to a particular topic, and to arrange it in a semantic way inside an ontology. The general framework is the design of an artificial agent able to deliberate when increasing its domain knowledge. In particular, this cognitive agent acts as a dialogue manager in an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) already presented by the authors. Our approach is based on the definition of useful patterns able to extract and identify novel concepts and relations to be added to the knowledge base. We propose a method that uses information from the wiki page’s structure. We define different stra…
Semi-automatic registration of retinal images based on line matching approach
2013
Accurate retinal image registration is essential to track the evolution of eye-related diseases. We propose a semiautomatic method based on features relying upon retinal graphs for temporal registration of retinal images. The features represent straight lines connecting vascular landmarks on the retina vascular tree: bifurcations, branchings, crossings, end points. In the built retinal graph, one straight line between two vascular landmarks indicates that they are connected by a vascular segment in the original retinal image. The locations of the landmarks are manually extracted to avoid the information loss due to errors in a retinal vessels segmentation algorithms. A straight line model i…
The Isgur-Wise function from the lattice
1995
We calculate the Isgur-Wise function by measuring the elastic scattering amplitude of a $D$ meson in the quenched approximation on a $24^3\times48$ lattice at $\beta=6.2$, using an $O(a)$-improved fermion action. Fitting the resulting chirally-extrapolated Isgur-Wise function to Stech's relativistic-oscillator parametrization, we obtain a slope parameter $\rho^2=1.2+7-3. We then use this result, in conjunction with heavy-quark symmetry, to extract $V_{cb}$\ from the experimentally measured $\bar B\to D^*l\bar\nu\,$\ differential decay width. We find $|V_{cb}|\sqrt{\tau_B/1.48{\mathrm ps}}= 0.038 +2-2 +8-3, where the first set of errors is due to experimental uncertainties, while the second …
Modeling musical attributes to characterize ensemble recordings using rhythmic audio features
2011
In this paper, we present the results of a pre-study on music performance analysis of ensemble music. Our aim is to implement a music classification system for the description of live recordings, for instance to help musicologist and musicians to analyze improvised ensemble performances. The main problem we deal with is the extraction of a suitable set of audio features from the recorded instrument tracks. Our approach is to extract rhythm-related audio features and to apply them for regression-based modeling of eight more general musical attributes. The model based on Partial Least-Squares Regression without preceding Principal Component Analysis performed best for all of the eight attribu…
