Simultaneous determination of bisphenol A, octylphenol, and nonylphenol by pressurised liquid extraction and liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectr…

2011

Abstract A new analytical method, using pressurised liquid extraction (PLE) and liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS), was developed for the simultaneous determination of bisphenol A (BPA), octylphenol (OP) and nonylphenol (NP) in powdered infant formulas (IF) and powdered skimmed milk (PM). The analytes were extracted by PLE, using this optimised conditions: ethyl acetate as solvent, 70 °C of temperature, reversed-phase silica C18 as dispersing agent and three cycles of extraction. The extracts were then injected in LC–MS/MS using a Gemini C18 column and a mixture of 5% water and 95% methanol/acetonitrile, both with 0.1% ammonia, as a mobile phase. Recoveries at differe…

An automatic flow-through system for exploration of the human bioaccessibility of endocrine disrupting compounds from microplastics

2021

This article reports on the first attempt towards investigating the leaching rates in the human gastrointestinal (GI) tract of plastic-borne contaminants that can be ingested accidentally using physiologically relevant body fluids. Oral bioaccessibility under fasted and fed states was determined in dynamic mode exploiting an automatic flow setup. The flow system is able to mimic the fast uptake of the released species from the polymeric matrix by absorption in the human digestive system by the in-line removal of the leached species. Complex GI extractants based on the Unified Bioaccessibility Method (UBM, fasted state) and Versantvoort test (fed-state) were brought through a microplastic-lo…

L-PRF application in extraction sockets of bisphosphonate-treated patients: preliminary results

2016

Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is a severe adverse event related to bisphosphonates (BPs) therapy; tooth extraction has been described as the main trigger. Autologous platelet concentrates, such Leukocyte-Platelet Rich Fibrin (L-PRF, Intraspin !) are designed to release platelet growth factors, improving the tissue healing in oral surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of our dental extraction protocol applied in BPs patients.

Almond by-products: Extraction and characterization of phenolic compounds and evaluation of their potential use in composite dough with wheat flour

2018

Blanched skins and blanching water, by-products of almond processing, were evaluated as potential ingredients of bakery products. The research included three phases: i) optimization of skin drying; ii) optimization of quali-quantitative determination of phenolic compounds, by comparing three extracting protocols; iii) assessment of the impact of by-products on the rheology of composite meals with wheat flour. Besides being less time-consuming, drying at 60 °C for 30 min lowered effectively skin moisture (7.86 g/100 g) and kept better odor notes (leafy and rancid odor scored 6.1 and 0.2, respectively), as well as higher content of phenolics (813.89 µg/g, with the most effective extracting me…

Routine HCV PCR screening of blood donations to identify early HCV infection in blood donors lacking antibodies to HCV

2001

BACKGROUND: Detection of early hepatitis C infection of blood donors is still a major problem for blood transfusion. Common anti-HCV screening assays show differences in sensitivity and specificity. The often mild symptoms of acute hepatitis C also cause difficulties in the identification of early HCV infection. The feasibility and efficacy of routine screening of blood donations for HCV RNA were investigated. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Blood donations (n = 251,737) were screened for HCV RNA over 4 years. RNA extraction, amplification, and detection were done by two commercial HCV PCR kits (HCV Cobas Amplicor and HCV Cobas Amplicor 2.0, Roche Diagnostics). Screening was done by pool testing …

Passive exposure to nicotine from e-cigarettes

2016

A procedure based on the use of ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), after liquid-liquid microextraction (LLME), has been successfully employed for the determination of passive exposure to nicotine from cigarette and e-cigarette smoking. Nicotine has been determined in exhaled breath and oral fluids of both, active and passive smokers. The aforementioned studies, made in closed environments, evidenced that the exhaled breath after conventional blend cigarette smoke provides nicotine levels of the order of 220 ng per puff, in the case of experienced smokers, being exhaled only 32 ng in the case of e-cigarettes. On the other hand, the nicotine amount in oral fluids of passive vapers was between 8…

Bone regeneration at extraction sockets filled with leukocyte-platelet-rich fibrin: An experimental pre-clinical study

2022

We aimed to histomorphometrically evaluate the effects of Leucocyte-Platelet-Rich Fibrin (L-PRF), with and without the combination of a bone grafting material, for alveolar ridge preservation using an in vivo canine model. Seven dogs (Female Beagles, ~18-month-old) were acquired for the study. L-PRF was prepared from each individual animal by drawing venous blood and spinning them through a centrifuge at 408 RCF-clot (IntrasSpin, Intra-Lock, Boca Raton, FL). L-PRF membranes were obtained from XPression fabrication kit (Biohorizons Implant Systems, Inc., AL, USA). A split mouth approach was adopted with the first molar mesial and distal socket defects treated in an interpolated fashion of th…

Real-time flaw detection on a complex object: comparison of results using classification with a support vector machine, boosting, and hyperrectangle-…

2006

We present a classification work performed on industrial parts using artificial vision, a support vector machine (SVM), boost- ing, and a combination of classifiers. The object to be controlled is a coated heater used in television sets. Our project consists of detect- ing anomalies under manufacturer production, as well as in classi- fying the anomalies among 20 listed categories. Manufacturer speci- fications require a minimum of ten inspections per second without a decrease in the quality of the produced parts. This problem is ad- dressed by using a classification system relying on real-time ma- chine vision. To fulfill both real-time and quality constraints, three classification algorit…

Class discovery from semi-structured EEG data for affective computing and personalisation

2017

The file attached to this record is the author's final peer reviewed version. The Publisher's final version can be found by following the DOI link. Many approaches to recognising emotions from metrical data such as EEG signals rely on identifying a very small number of classes and to train a classifier. The interpretation of these classes varies from a single emotion such as stress [24] to features of emotional model such as valence-arousal [4]. There are two major issues here. First classification approach limits the analysis of the data within the selected classes and is also highly dependent on training data/cycles, all of which limits generalisation. Second issue is that it does not exp…

Dynamic Community Detection for Brain Functional Networks during Music Listening with Block Component Analysis

2023

Publisher Copyright: Author The human brain can be described as a complex network of functional connections between distinct regions, referred to as the brain functional network. Recent studies show that the functional network is a dynamic process and its community structure evolves with time during continuous task performance. Consequently, it is important for the understanding of the human brain to develop dynamic community detection techniques for such time-varying functional networks. Here, we propose a temporal clustering framework based on a set of network generative models and surprisingly it can be linked to Block Component Analysis to detect and track the latent community structure…
