New approaches in the treatment of Adamantiades-Behçet's disease.

Purpose of review To update clinicians on the recent advances in the treatment of Adamantiades-Behcet's disease. Recent findings Interferon-α-2a and infliximab have proved able to induce prompt remission in the vast majority of Adamantiades-Behcet's patients with DMARD-resistant uveoretinitis. Efficacy of interferon-α-2a has also been reported for mucocutaneous lesions, arthritis, and (more anecdotally) for neuro-Behcet, while results from small case series suggest that infliximab is beneficial for mucocutaneous lesions and (more anecdotally) for arthritis and gastro-intestinal manifestations. This study investigated the role of vection (i.e., a visually induced sense of self-motion), optokinetic nystagmus (OKN), and inadvertent head movements in visually induced motion sickness (VIMS), evoked by yaw rotation of the visual surround. Ocular signs in Fabry disease have generally been regarded to be primarily of diagnostic value. We explored whether ocular findings, alone or in particular in combination with the α-galactosidase A gene mutation, have predictive value for disease severity. Data from the Fabry Outcome Survey (FOS), a large, global database sponsored by Shire, were selected for adult patients who had undergone ophthalmological examination. Three ocular signs were assessed: cornea verticillata, tortuous conjunctival and/or retinal vessels, and cataract. This cross-sectional study aims to clarify the characteristics of reflexive saccades at various ages to establish a normative cohort in a standardized set-up. Second objective is to investigate the feasibility of saccadometry in daily ophthalmological practice. Laser and other treatment options in the therapy of infantile capillary eyelid and periorbital hemangiomas: An overview

Abstract Hemangiomas in infancy generally require a multidisciplinary approach. As a result of their natural course, usually with spontaneous involution, a “watch-and-wait” strategy often seems to be sufficient. Nevertheless, in periorbital hemangiomas not only cosmetic but also functional aspects may require an early intervention. There are many treatment options such as steroids, surgery, cryotherapy, magnesium seeds and laser. The present paper focuses on the different types of laser used in the treatment of infantile capillary eyelid and periorbital hemangiomas.

Combined pre- and postnatal ethanol exposure in rats disturbs the myelination of optic axons.

Aims: To analyse myelination and outgrowth of the optic axons in relation to the neuro-ophthalmological manifestations of ethanol (EtOH) abuse during pregnancy. Methods: An experimental model of chronic EtOH exposure was developed in rats and their offspring by subjecting the dams to a liquid diet (35% of the daily total calories as either EtOH or maltose-dextrose nutritional controls (Con). A cognitive impairment showed to be a negative prognostic factor in ALS patients, perhaps affecting the ability to make informed decisions.
