Toric phakic intraocular lens

2003

Abstract Objective To evaluate safety, efficacy, predictability, stability, complications, and patient satisfaction after implantation of Artisan toric phakic intraocular lenses (TPIOLs) for the correction of myopia or hyperopia with astigmatism. Design Prospective, nonrandomized, comparative (self-controlled) multicenter trial. Participants Seventy eyes of 53 patients (mean, 35 years; range, 22–59 years) with preoperative spherical equivalent between +6.50 and −21.25 diopters (D) and cylinder between 1.50 and 7.25 D. Methods Seventy eyes underwent implantation of a TPIOL with an optical zone of 5.0 mm (Artisan, Ophtec, Groningen, The Netherlands). The dioptric power of the intraocular lens…

Changes in higher-order aberrations after implantation of a foldable iris-claw lens in myopic phakic eyes

2006

Purpose To evaluate the change in higher-order aberrations (HOAs) after implantation of a foldable iris-claw phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) in myopic eyes. Setting Department of Ophthalmology, Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz, Germany. Methods This prospective nonrandomized comparative self-controlled trial included 41 eyes that had implantation of a foldable iris-claw pIOL between July 2003 and November 2004. All patient data for HOAs (Zernike coefficient) were measured and calculated using the same pupil size preoperatively and postoperatively, and the root-mean-square (RMS) wavefront error was calculated. Examinations were performed preoperatively as well as 1 week and 3, 6, and 12 m…

Evaluation of Shared Genetic Susceptibility to High and Low Myopia and Hyperopia

2021

Importance: Uncertainty currently exists about whether the same genetic variants are associated with susceptibility to low myopia (LM) and high myopia (HM) and to myopia and hyperopia. Addressing this question is fundamental to understanding the genetics of refractive error and has clinical relevance for genotype-based prediction of children at risk for HM and for identification of new therapeutic targets. Objective: To assess whether a common set of genetic variants are associated with susceptibility to HM, LM, and hyperopia. Design, Setting, and Participants: This genetic association study assessed unrelated UK Biobank participants 40 to 69 years of age of European and Asian ancestry. Par…

Variations of OCT measurements corrected for the magnification effect according to axial length and refractive error in children

2018

Purpose: The aim of this paper was to examine the distribution of macular, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness and optic disc parameters of myopic and hyperopic eyes in comparison with emmetropic control eyes and to investigate their variation according to axial length (AL) and spherical equivalent (SE) in healthy children. Methods: This study included 293 pairs of eyes of 293 children (145 boys and 148 girls), ranging in age from 6 to 17 years. Subjects were divided according to SE in control (emmetropia, 99 children), myopia (100 children) and hyperopia (94 children) groups and according to axial AL in 68 short ([Formula: see text]22.00[Formula: see text]mm, 68), medium (from [For…

Arteriovenöse Dissektion (AVD) bei retinalen Venolenastverschlüssen

2009

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to report on arteriovenous sheathotomy in branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) with a long-term follow-up and examine the visual field effects of this surgical approach. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In a clinical trial 36 eyes with branch retinal vein occlusion (22 eyes with ischaemia, 14 eyes with chronic macular oedema) underwent surgical decompression accompanied by peeling of the membrana limitans interna after prior isovolemic haemodilution for 3 months had been unsuccessfull. RESULTS: All eyes showed a significant reduction of macular oedema 3 months after surgery. During follow-up (median: 26.4 months) visual acuity increased in 24 / 36 eyes and was stab…

Safety and Efficacy of Ranibizumab in Macular Edema following Retinal Vein Occlusion.

2013

Macular edema is the leading cause of visual impairment in patients with retinal vein occlusion. Limited improvements may be obtained with laser photocoagulation or intravitreal triamcinolone. However, according to the data provided by randomized clinical trials, intravitreal injections of ranibizumab (Lucentis; Genentech, South San Francisco, CA) constitute a new effective and safe option for the management of these vision-threatening diseases. The aim of the present review is to summarize the clinical evidence of ranibizumab for macular edema due to retinal vein occlusions.

Relationships Between Standing Balance and Symmetry Measurements in Patients Following Recent Strokes (≤3 Weeks) or Older Strokes (≥6 Months)

2004

Abstract Background and Purpose. The Functional Standing Balance (FSB) Scale was designed to obtain measurements of standing balance and to identify the problems typically faced by people with stroke. The purpose of this study was to investigate the validity of measurements obtained with the FSB Scale for use in the acute and chronic phases of stroke by comparing the measurements obtained with the FSB Scale with those obtained for postural sway and lateral symmetry by use of a force platform. Subjects and Methods. Measurements were obtained for 26 people with recent strokes (ie, strokes within 3 weeks of data collection) and for 28 people with long-standing strokes (ie, strokes of 6 months'…

Effects of Ageing on the Anterior Segment of the Eye Structure and Function

2018

[Excerpt] The world will soon have more aged people than children and more people at extreme old age than ever before [1]. Improving quality of life as well as reducing severe disability due to age-related problems has become key for the health systems worldwide. The ageing of the world population has both structural and functional consequences for the human visual system; changes due to ageing occur in all the structures of the eye causing a variety of effects. Over the last few years, great advances in ophthalmic instrumentation allow the determination of ocular parameters to a level of detail without precedent. Such advances allowresearcherstodevelopspecificdevicesforvisualcorrection and r…

Serous Macular Detachment Associated with Dome-Shaped Macula and Tilted Disc

2011

Introduction: An entirely new type of staphyloma has been recently described as dome-shaped macula (DSM). It is characterized by an abnormal convex macular contour within the concavity of a posterior staphyloma. We found DSM associated with serous macular detachment (SMD) and tilted disc in two consecutive cases. Case Reports: Case 1: A 37-year-old female presented to our department because of sudden onset blurred vision in her right eye (OD). The best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 0.5 in both eyes. Funduscopy evidenced bilateral tilted disc associated with posterior staphyloma. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) demonstrated a DSM with SMD in her OD. After 15 months of follow-up, BCVA…

Radiation effects on light scattering and cataract formation in the lenses of interventional radiologist and cardiologists

2014

Purpose There is little information about exposure to dosages below 500 mSv. This pilot study aimed at investigating the effects of low dose radiation on lens transparency in occupationally exposed interventional cardiologists and radiologists. Methods Physicians who have performed fluoroscopically guided procedures for at least 5 years were recruited in the areas of Cologne-Bonn and Rhine-Main together with their non-exposed colleagues. A questionnaire has been developed to estimate occupational exposure. Exclusion criteria comprised corticosteroid treatment, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and glaucoma. Changes in lens transparency and cataract formation were determined by slit lamp microscopy…
