Purpose To study the prevalence and risk factors of myopia with data from a questionnaire study conducted in 1983 among Finnish school children. Methods School children (n = 4 961) from the 1st, 5th and 8th grades of school (7-, 11- and 15-year-olds) in Central Finland were screened for vision followed by a questionnaire, which was returned by 4 352 (87.7%) participants. Myopia was categorized based on the questionnaire. The prevalence of myopia has markedly increased in East and Southeast Asia, and pathologic consequences of myopia, including myopic maculopathy and high myopia-associated optic neuropathy, are now some of the most common causes of irreversible blindness. Hence, strategies are warranted to reduce the prevalence of myopia and the progression to high myopia because this is the main modifiable risk factor for pathologic myopia. Apšuciema kaļķainais zāļu purvs ir Eiropas Biotopu direktīvas biotops ar nozīmīgām dižās aslapes un rūsganās melnceres audzēm, kuru apdzīvo Vertigo ģints pumpurgliemeži, pie tam V. angustior un V. geyeri ir iekļautas Eiropas Biotopu direktīvas II pielikumā. Gliemeži spēj asimilēt vidē esošo kalciju, tāpēc tie ir sastopami tādos biotopos kā kaļķaini purvi. Pētījuma rezultāti liecina, ka Apšuciema purvā ir izveidojušās trīs veģetācijas zonas, kurās mijiedarbība ar pumpurgliemežiem atšķiras. Anatomic and functional follow-up of patients with an idiopathic epiretinal membrane and a preserved visual acuity

Purpose: To determine the anatomic and functional retinal modifications in patients with an idiopathic epiretinal membrane (ERM) and a preserved visual acuity (VA).Methods: Monocentric, prospective study in 24 eyes of 24 patients with an ERM and a VA better than 20/25. Recorded data were best corrected VA on ETDRS scale, retinal anatomic lesions on spectral-domain OCT, retinal sensitivities on microperimetry and macular and foveal thicknesses at 0 and 6 months.Results: At inclusion, mean VA was 84 ± 5 letters, mean macular sensitivity was 14.0 ± 1.4 decibels (dB) and mean foveal sensitivity was 14,4 ± 1,5 dB. Scleral buckling represents a valuable treatment option for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair. The surgery is based on two main principles: the closure of retinal breaks and the creation of a long-lasting chorioretinal adhesion. Buckles are placed onto the sclera with the purpose of sealing retinal breaks. Cryopexy is usually performed to ensure a long-lasting chorioretinal adhesion. Deimatic displays, where sudden changes in prey appearance elicit aversive predator reactions, have been suggested to occur in many taxa. These (often only putative) displays frequently involve different components that may also serve antipredator functions via other mechanisms (e.g., mimicry, warning signalling, body inflation). Silto acu komprešu ietekme uz acs asaru slāņa īpašībām

Pētījuma mērķis bija novērtēt silto komprešu terapijas efektivitāti uz asaru slāņa īpašībām pacientiem ar sausas acs subjektīvo simptomātiku. 18 pētījuma dalībniekieki, lietojot TheraPearl acu maskas divas reizes dienā no rīta un vakarā pa 5 vai 10 minūtēm, veica silto komprešu terapiju 14 dienu periodā. Diagnostikie mērījumi pirms terapijas, pēc terapijas un trīs nedēļas pēc terapijas beigām tika veikti asaru slāņa īpašību novērtēšanai. Dalībnieki pēc terapijas uzrādīja ievērojamu OSDI un DEQ-5 anketu rezultāta uzlabošanos un uzlabojums saglabājās arī trīs nedēļas pēc terapijas beigām. Pēc terapijas netika novērots statiski būtisks uzlabojums neinvazīvajā asaru slāņa plīšanas laikā (NIBUT).
