Freshness assessment of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) by machine vision based on gill and eye color changes

2013

Abstract The fish freshness was evaluated using machine vision technique through color changes of eyes and gills of farmed and wild gilthead sea bream ( Sparus aurata ), being employed lightness ( L * ), redness ( a * ), yellowness ( b * ), chroma ( c * ), and total color difference (Δ E ) parameters during fish ice storage. A digital color imaging system, calibrated to provide accurate CIELAB color measurements, was employed to record the visual characteristics of eyes and gills. The region of interest was automatically selected using a computer program developed in MATLAB software. L * , b * , and Δ E of eyes increased with storage time, while c * decreased. The a * parameter of fish eyes…

Control of a PTZ camera in a hybrid vision system

2014

In this paper, we propose a new approach to steer a PTZ camera in the direction of a detected object visible from another fixed camera equipped with a fisheye lens. This heterogeneous association of two cameras having different characteristics is called a hybrid stereo-vision system. The presented method employs epipolar geometry in a smart way in order to reduce the range of search of the desired region of interest. Furthermore, we proposed a target recognition method designed to cope with the illumination problems, the distortion of the omnidirectional image and the inherent dissimilarity of resolution and color responses between both cameras. Experimental results with synthetic and real …

Material properties of various intraocular lenses in an experimental study.

2002

Introduction: With the recent introduction of small-incision cataract surgery, requirements for intraocular lens (IOL) flexibility, strength and hydrophilicity have rapidly evolved. The IOL surface, however, remains a critical factor influencing uveal biocompatibility. Purpose: To objectively quantify factors of material properties of various IOLs using contact angle measurements, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic-mechanical measurements and scanning electron microscopy. Material and Methods: In our study, 17 currently available IOLs were investigated using contact angle measurements to assess hydrophilicity and biocompatibil…

The influence of eye movements on the temporal features of executed and imagined arm movements.

2007

The very close coordination between eye and hand indicates that eye movements are parts of the neural processes underlying the planning and control of arm movements. Eye movements are fundamental during observed actions and play a functional role in visual mental imagery. However, the role of eye movements during imagined actions is still unknown. Here, we report the timing features of eye and arm pointing movements for nine healthy participants in four conditions: Executed movements with orientation saccades (Eyes Free) or with no saccades (Eyes Motionless), and Imagined movements with Eyes Free or with Eyes Motionless. The first result was a facilitation effect of saccades upon both execu…

Phase matters: responding to and learning about peripheral stimuli depends on hippocampal θ phase at stimulus onset.

2015

Hippocampal θ (3–12 Hz) oscillations are implicated in learning and memory, but their functional role remains unclear. We studied the effect of the phase of local θ oscillation on hippocampal responses to a neutral conditioned stimulus (CS) and subsequent learning of classical trace eyeblink conditioning in adult rabbits. High-amplitude, regular hippocampal θ-band responses (that predict good learning) were elicited by the CS when it was timed to commence at the fissure θ trough (Trough group). Regardless, learning in this group was not enhanced compared with a yoked control group, possibly due to a ceiling effect. However, when the CS was consistently presented to the peak of θ (Peak group…

Textureless macula swelling detection with multiple retinal fundus images

2011

Retinal fundus images acquired with nonmydriatic digital fundus cameras are versatile tools for the diagnosis of various retinal diseases. Because of the ease of use of newer camera models and their relatively low cost, these cameras can be employed by operators with limited training for telemedicine or point-of-care (PoC) applications. We propose a novel technique that uses uncalibrated multiple-view fundus images to analyze the swelling of the macula. This innovation enables the detection and quantitative measurement of swollen areas by remote ophthalmologists. This capability is not available with a single image and prone to error with stereo fundus cameras. We also present automatic alg…

Spatiotemporal and gender-specific parasitism in two species of gobiid fish

2018

Parasitism is considered a major selective force in natural host populations. Infections can decrease host condition and vigour, and potentially influence, for example, host population dynamics and behavior such as mate choice. We studied parasite infections of two common marine fish species, the sand goby (Pomatoschistus minutus) and the common goby (Pomatoschistus microps), in the brackish water Northern Baltic Sea. We were particularly interested in the occurrence of parasite taxa located in central sensory organs, such as eyes, potentially affecting fish behavior and mate choice. We found that both fish species harbored parasite communities dominated by taxa transmitted to fish through …
