On the existence of weak solution to the coupled fluid-structure interaction problem for non-Newtonian shear-dependent fluid

2016

We study the existence of weak solution for unsteady fluid-structure interaction problem for shear-thickening flow. The time dependent domain has at one part a flexible elastic wall. The evolution of fluid domain is governed by the generalized string equation with action of the fluid forces. The power-law viscosity model is applied to describe shear-dependent non-Newtonian fluids.

Rank structured approximation method for quasi--periodic elliptic problems

2016

We consider an iteration method for solving an elliptic type boundary value problem $\mathcal{A} u=f$, where a positive definite operator $\mathcal{A}$ is generated by a quasi--periodic structure with rapidly changing coefficients (typical period is characterized by a small parameter $\epsilon$) . The method is based on using a simpler operator $\mathcal{A}_0$ (inversion of $\mathcal{A}_0$ is much simpler than inversion of $\mathcal{A}$), which can be viewed as a preconditioner for $\mathcal{A}$. We prove contraction of the iteration method and establish explicit estimates of the contraction factor $q$. Certainly the value of $q$ depends on the difference between $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal…

REMITTANCES IMPACTS ON SCHOOLING IN JORDAN: ANALYSES WITH RESPECT TO MIGRANT DESTINATION

2019

The two channels that explain how migration of a household member affects human capital formation of those left-behind are income and family disruption effects. In this study, remittances and migration impacts on human capital formation in Jordan is researched with respect to preferred migrant destinations and to the originating governorates of migrants. Jordan’s Labour Market Panel Survey-2010 is used to carry out the analyses. Remittances are found to have a positive impact on “schooling”, and findings do not change significantly across households with respect to the host country. There is no solid evidence of family disruption, except in households where both parents are absent; however,…

Trade Costs, Trade Balances, and Current Accounts: an application of Gravity to Multilateral Trade

2005

In this paper we test the well-known hypothesis of Obstfeld and Rogoff (NBER Macroeconomics Annual 7777:339–390, 2000) that trade costs are the key to explaining the so-called Feldstein–Horioka puzzle. Our approach has a number of novel features. First, we focus on the interrelationship between trade costs, the trade account and the Feldstein–Horioka puzzle. Second, we use the gravity model to estimate the effect of trade costs on bilateral trade and, third, we show how bilateral trade can be used to draw inferences about desired trade balances and desired intertemporal trade. Our econometric results provide strong support for the Obstfeld and Rogoff hypothesis and we are also able to recon…

The Trade Creation Effect of Immigrants: Evidence from the Remarkable Case of Spain

2010

There is abundant evidence that immigrant networks are associated with larger exports from the country where they settle to their countries of origin. The direction of causality of this association is less clearly established. Also, we do not know to what extent these increased exports are due to an increase in the number of exporting firms (i.e. the extensive margin of trade) or due to larger values exported by existing firm (i.e. the intensive margin). Using micro data on individual trade transactions from Spanish provinces between 1995 and 2008 and data on the stock of immigrants in those provinces by country of origin we can make progress on both fronts. The richness of our data allows …

On the convergence of fixed point iterations for the moving geometry in a fluid-structure interaction problem

2019

In this paper a fluid-structure interaction problem for the incompressible Newtonian fluid is studied. We prove the convergence of an iterative process with respect to the computational domain geometry. In our previous works on numerical approximation of similar problems we refer this approach as the global iterative method. This iterative approach can be understood as a linearization of the so-called geometric nonlinearity of the underlying model. The proof of the convergence is based on the Banach fixed point argument, where the contractivity of the corresponding mapping is shown due to the continuous dependence of the weak solution on the given domain deformation. This estimate is obtain…

Exome chip association study excluded the involvement of rare coding variants with large effect sizes in the etiology of anorectal malformations

2019

IntroductionAnorectal malformations (ARM) are rare congenital malformations, resulting from disturbed hindgut development. A genetic etiology has been suggested, but evidence for the involvement of specific genes is scarce. We evaluated the contribution of rare and low-frequency coding variants in ARM etiology, assuming a multifactorial model.MethodsWe analyzed 568 Caucasian ARM patients and 1,860 population-based controls using the Illumina Human Exome Beadchip array, which contains >240,000 rare and low-frequency coding variants. GenomeStudio clustering and calling was followed by re-calling of 'no-calls' using zCall for patients and controls simultaneously. Single variant and gene-bas…
