Rapid and specific detection of F17-related pilin and adhesin genes in diarrheic and septicemic Escherichia coli strains by multiplex PCR
1996
The F17-related adhesins are prevalent in Escherichia coli strains isolated from calves with diarrhea or septicemia and from lambs with nephropathy. The F17 family includes the F17a, F17b, F17c, and F111 fimbriae produced by bovine E. coli strains and the G agglutinin produced by human uropathogenic E. coli strains. An easy and inexpensive multiplex PCR method was developed to detect all the F17-related fimbriae and to identify four subtypes of structural subunit genes and two distinct subfamilies of adhesin genes by only two runs of amplification. A strict correlation was observed between the phenotypic assays and the multiplex PCR method when 166 pathogenic E. coli strains isolated from i…
A pan-cancer analysis shows immunoevasive characteristics in NRF2 hyperactive squamous malignancies
2023
The NRF2 pathway is frequently activated in various cancer types, yet a comprehensive analysis of its effects across different malignancies is currently lacking. We developed a NRF2 activity metric and utilized it to conduct a pan-cancer analysis of oncogenic NRF2 signaling. We identified an immunoevasive phenotype where high NRF2 activity is associated with low interferon-gamma (IFNγ), HLA-I expression and T cell and macrophage infiltration in squamous malignancies of the lung, head and neck area, cervix and esophagus. Squamous NRF2 overactive tumors comprise a molecular phenotype with SOX2/TP63 amplification, TP53 mutation and CDKN2A loss. These immune cold NRF2 hyperactive diseases are a…
Between Scylla and Charibdis: eIF2α kinases as targets for cancer chemotherapy
2011
[EN] The eIF2 alpha kinases integrate translation initiation rates with nutrient availability, thus allowing cells to adapt to nutrient scarcity. Recent evidence has uncovered new functions of these kinases in tumour cell biology, ranging from regulation of cell cycle progression, maintenance of genome stability, control of apoptosis, and cell survival under nutrient stress and hypoxia. Accordingly, active eIF2 alpha kinases modulate the antineoplasic activity of several antitumour drugs, either by exacerbating their cytotoxic effect or by promoting chemoresistance. Understanding of eIF2 alpha kinases molecular roles may provide mechanistic insights into how tumour cells sense and adapt to …
Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress Inhibition Protects against Excitotoxic Neuronal Injury in the Rat Brain
2007
Elevated brain glutamate with activation of neuronal glutamate receptors accompanies neurological disorders, such as epilepsy and brain trauma. However, the mechanisms by which excitotoxicity triggers neuronal injury are not fully understood. We have studied the glutamate receptor agonist kainic acid (KA) inducing seizures and excitotoxic cell death. KA caused the disintegration of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) membrane in hippocampal neurons and ER stress with the activation of the ER proteins Bip, Chop, and caspase-12. Salubrinal, inhibiting eIF2α (eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2 subunit α) dephosphorylation, significantly reduced KA-induced ER stress and neuronal deathin vivo…
"Decay Phase-Space Volume of Partial Waves" of "Light isovector resonances in $\pi^- p \to \pi^-\pi^-\pi^+ p$ at 190 GeV/${\it c}$"
2018
Decay phase-space volume $I_{aa}$ for the 14 selected partial waves as a function of $m_{3\pi}$, normalized such that $I_{aa}(m_{3\pi} = 2.5~\text{GeV}/c^2) = 1$. The wave index $a$ represents the quantum numbers that uniquely define the partial wave. The quantum numbers are given by the shorthand notation $J^{PC} M^\varepsilon [$isobar$] \pi L$. We use this notation to label the decay phase-space volume in the column headers. The labels are identical to the ones used in the column headers of the table of the transition amplitudes. $I_{aa}$ is calculated using Monte Carlo integration techniques for fixed $m_{3\pi}$ values, which are given in the first column, in the range from 0.5 to 2.5 Ge…
"Transition Amplitudes" of "Light isovector resonances in $\pi^- p \to \pi^-\pi^-\pi^+ p$ at 190 GeV/${\it c}$"
2018
Real and imaginary parts of the normalized transition amplitudes $\mathcal{T}_a$ of the 14 selected partial waves in the 1100 $(m_{3\pi}, t')$ cells (see Eq. (12) in the paper). The wave index $a$ represents the quantum numbers that uniquely define the partial wave. The quantum numbers are given by the shorthand notation $J^{PC} M^\varepsilon [$isobar$] \pi L$. We use this notation to label the transition amplitudes in the column headers. The $m_{3\pi}$ values that are given in the first column correspond to the bin centers. Each of the 100 $m_{3\pi}$ bins is 20 MeV/$c^2$ wide. Since the 11 $t'$ bins are non-equidistant, the lower and upper bounds of each $t'$ bin are given in the column he…
A measurement of the photon structure function F-2(gamma) at an average Q(2) of 12 GeV2/c(4)
1995
The hadronic photon structure function F_{2}^{gamma} has been measured in the Q^{2} range from 4 to 30~GeV^2/c^{4} and down to x values of order 0.001, using data taken with the DELPHI detector at LEP between 1991 and 1993. A comparison is made with several F_{2}^{gamma} parameterizations with special emphasis on their low x behaviour. A result on the Q^{2} evolution of F_{2}^{gamma} is presented.
Reduction of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) related nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) translocation but not inhibitor kappa-B (Iκ-B)-degradation by …
2002
Degradation of inhibitor kappa-B (Ikappa-B) followed by translocation of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) into the nucleus and activation of gene expression is essential in tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha)-signaling. In order to analyze the role of Rho proteins in TNF-alpha-induced NF-kappaB-activation in human umbilical cord vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) we used Clostridium difficile toxin B-10463 (TcdB-10463) which inactivates RhoA/Rac1/Cdc42 by glucosylation and Clostridium botulinum C3-toxin which inhibits RhoA/B/C by ADP-ribosylation. Exposure of HUVEC to 10 ng/mL TcdB-10463 or 2.5 microg/mL C3-toxin inhibited TNF-alpha (100 ng/mL)-induced expression of a NF-kappaB-dependent r…
Origin of the Enhanced Photoluminescence Quantum Yield in MAPbBr 3 Perovskite with Reduced Crystal Size
2018
Methylammonium lead bromide perovskite (MAPbBr3) has been widely investigated for applications in visible perovskite light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Fine-tuning of the morphology and of the crystal size, from the microscale down to the quantum confinement regime, has been used to increase the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). However, the physical processes underlying the PL emission of this perovskite remain unclear. Here, we elucidate the origin of the PL emission of polycrystalline MAPbBr3 thin films by different spectroscopic techniques. We estimate the exciton binding energy, the reduced exciton effective mass, and the trap density. Moreover, we confirm the coexistence of free carr…
