Sharing and Caring

2017

The purpose of this chapter is to describe the FADS symposia and the functioning of the network in between the actual gatherings, and to explain the meetings and their significance to everyone’s dissertation work. Three FADS students who participated in the symposia and engaged in the different assignments wrote this chapter together. The description and discussion is based on our own experiences, and on the observations and discoveries we have made about others during our face-to-face conversations, and from the online forum that functioned as a common space for further commentary and discussion between meetings. The title of the chapter refers to two of the three tasks that constituted th…

Fast Estimation of Diffusion Tensors under Rician noise by the EM algorithm

2016

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is widely used to characterize, in vivo, the white matter of the central nerve system (CNS). This biological tissue contains much anatomic, structural and orientational information of fibers in human brain. Spectral data from the displacement distribution of water molecules located in the brain tissue are collected by a magnetic resonance scanner and acquired in the Fourier domain. After the Fourier inversion, the noise distribution is Gaussian in both real and imaginary parts and, as a consequence, the recorded magnitude data are corrupted by Rician noise. Statistical estimation of diffusion leads a non-linear regression problem. In this paper, we present a f…

Outage statistics for Beckmann fading channels in non-isotropic scattering environments

2015

In this paper, the outage statistics are studied for non-isotropic Beckmann fading channel model. Non-isotropic scattering generally results in an asymmetrical Doppler power spectral density (PSD). In this context, an expression for the outage probability (OP) (or equivalently the cumulative distribution function (CDF)) of the fading envelope is first derived. Then, the probability density function (PDF) of the rate of change of the fading envelope is investigated. Thereafter, an expression for the average rate of outages (ARO) (or equivalently the level-crossing rate (LCR)) is provided. Finally, by making use of the analytical results of the ARO and OP, an expression for the average durati…

A generalized method for the design of ergodic sum-of-cisoids simulators for multiple uncorrelated rayleigh fading channels

2010

In this paper, we present a new method for the design of ergodic sum-of-sinusoids (SOS) simulation models for multiple uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels. The method, which is intended for a special class of SOS models, known as sum-of-cisoids (SOC) models, can be used to generate an arbitrary number of uncorrelated Rayleigh fading waveforms with specified Doppler power spectral characteristics. This is in contrast to the SOS simulators currently available in the open literature that have been designed under the isotropic scattering assumption, which are limited to the simulation of uncorrelated channels characterized by Clarke's U-shaped Doppler power spectral density (DPSD). The excell…

p53 triggers apoptosis in oncogene-expressing fibroblasts by the induction of Noxa and mitochondrial Bax translocation.

2003

The mechanism of p53-dependent apoptosis is still only partly defined. Using early-passage embryonic fibroblasts (MEF) from wild-type (wt), p53(-/-) and bax(-/-) mice, we observe a p53-dependent translocation of Bax to the mitochondria and a release of mitochondrial Cytochrome c during stress-induced apoptosis. These events proceed independent of zVAD-inhibitable caspase activation, are not prevented by dominant negative FADD (DN-FADD), but are negatively regulated by Mdm-2. Bcl-x(L) expression prevents the release of mitochondrial Cytochrome c and apoptosis, but not Bax translocation. At a single-cell level, enforced expression of p53 is sufficient to induce Bax translocation and Cytochrom…

Interactions between dietary n-3 fatty acids and genetic variants and risk of disease

2012

Nutritional genomics has undergone rapid development and the concept is now very popular with the general public. Therefore, there is increasing demand for knowledge on adapting dietary composition to the genome. Our aim has been to undertake a systematic review so as to find out the level of evidence existing on whether the effects of n-3 fatty acids on health can be modulated by genetic variation. A systematic literature search was conducted on studies that jointly analyse the effect of one or more genetic variants in candidate genes and n-3 fatty acids. Both observational and experimental studies were included. Results are classified in accordance with whether the study was undertaken on…

Age-Related Changes in the Gut Microbiota Modify Brain Lipid Composition

2020

PMCID: PMC6970973; International audience; Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the changes observed during aging is a prerequisite to design strategies to prevent age-related diseases. Aging is associated with metabolic changes, including alteration in the brain lipid metabolism. These alterations may contribute to the development of pathophysiological conditions. Modifications in the gut microbiota composition are also observed during aging. As communication axes exist between the gut microbiota and the brain and knowing that microbiota influences the host metabolism, we speculated on whether age-associated modifications in the gut microbiota could be involved in the lipid ch…

Influence of fish aggregating devices (FADs) on anti-predator behaviour within experimental mesocosms

2015

Commercial fishers have used fish aggregating devices throughout the Mediterranean Sea for over 40 years. These devices attract numerous predatory and forage species in both coastal and offshore environments. This study examined the influence of fish aggregating devices on schooling and aggregating behaviour by small forage fish in quasi-natural mesocosms. Anti-predator behaviour was evaluated for juvenile Caranx crysos under a variety of treatment conditions. Results suggest that, in the absence of physical structure, C. crysos first respond to a predatory threat by forming a school. When a physical structure is present, however, C. crysos show an occasional tendency to aggregate near the …

Wireless OFDM-OQAM with a small number of subcarriers

2008

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing based on offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM-OQAM) is a multicarrier signaling technique which trades off robustness for spectral efficiency when compared to conventional OFDM with a cyclic prefix. In this paper, a novel matrix model for passband OFDM-OQAM signaling with a small number of subcarriers over a multipath frequency selective fading channel is presented. Specifically, in OFDM-OQAM a frequency selective channel is divided into many smaller but still frequency selective overlapping channels, so approximating the frequency response of a subchannel by the channel frequency response sampled at the subcarrier frequency may be inadequa…

A simple joint estimation-detection technique for OFDM systems

2005

In this work a simple approach for the joint estimation-detection in a frequency selective severe fading environment of OFDM signals adopting PSK constellations is presented. A linear predictor of suitable order is adopted for the channel estimation in the frequency domain. The predictor coefficients are estimated on the basis of a sample estimation of the autocorrelation of the channel frequency response, aided by a preliminary differential decoding, in a blockwise manner. The detection technique proposed here is based on a simple tree search where a small number of best survivor paths are maintained at each step. Despite the simplicity of above detection approach, the simulation results s…
