Small GTP-binding Rho GTPases regulate important signaling pathways in endothelial cells, but little is known about their role in endothelial cell apoptosis. Clostridial cytotoxins specifically inactivate GTPases by glucosylation [ Clostridium difficile toxin B-10463 (TcdB-10463), C. difficile toxin B-1470 (TcdB-1470)] or ADP ribosylation ( C. botulinum C3 toxin). Exposure of human umbilical cord vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) to TcdB-10463, which inhibits RhoA/Rac1/Cdc42, or to C3 toxin, which inhibits RhoA, -B, -C, resulted in apoptosis, whereas inactivation of Rac1/Cdc42 with TcdB-1470 was without effect, suggesting that Rho inhibition was responsible for endothelial apoptosis. Onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathophysiology differs between brain regions. The neocortex, for example, is a brain region that is affected very early during AD. NMDA receptors (NMDARs) are involved in mediating amyloid beta (Aβ) toxicity. NMDAR expression, on the other hand, can be affected by Aβ. We tested whether the high vulnerability of neocortical neurons for Aβ-toxicity may result from specific NMDAR expression profiles or from a particular regulation of NMDAR expression by Aβ. A new analytical method, based on capillary electrophoresis and tandem mass spectrometry (CE-MS2), is proposed and validated for the identification and simultaneous quantification of 12 sulfonamides (SAs) in pork meat. The studied SAs include sulfathiazole, sulfadiazine, sulfamethoxypyridazine, sulfaguanidine, sulfanilamide, sulfadimethoxyne, sulfapyridine, sulfachloropyridazine, sulfisoxazole, sulfasalazine, sulfabenzamide and sulfadimidine. Nucleon Form Factors at high q2 within constituent quark models

The nucleon form factors are calculated using a non-relativistic description in terms of constituent quarks. The emphasis is put on the reliability of present numerical methods used to solve the three-body problem in order to correctly reproduce the expected asymptotic behavior of form factors. Nucleon wave functions obtained in the hyperspherical formalism or employing Faddeev equations have been considered. While a q**(-8) behavior is expected at high q for a quark-quark force behaving like 1/r at short distances, it is found that the hypercentral approximation in the hyperspherical formalism (K=0) leads to a q**(-7) behavior. Charmed and Bottom Baryons: a Variational Approach based on Heavy Quark Symmetry

The use of Heavy Quark Symmetry to study bottom and charmed baryons leads to important simplifications of the non-relativistic three body problem, which turns out to be easily solved by a simple variational ansatz. Our simple scheme reproduces previous results (baryon masses, charge and mass radii, $...$) obtained by solving the Faddeev equations with simple non-relativistic quark--quark potentials, adjusted to the light and heavy--light meson spectra. Wave functions, parameterized in a simple manner, are also given and thus they can be easily used to compute further observables. SAHA/TRAIL combination induces detachment and anoikis of MDA-MB231 and MCF-7 breast cancer cells

Abstract SAHA, an inhibitor of histone deacetylase activity, has been shown to sensitize tumor cells to apoptosis induced by TRAIL, a member of TNF-family. In this paper we investigated the effect of SAHA/TRAIL combination in two breast cancer cell lines, the ERα−positive MCF-7 and the ERα−negative MDA-MB231. Treatment of MDA-MB231 and MCF-7 cells with SAHA in combination with TRAIL caused detachment of cells followed by anoikis, a form of apoptosis which occurs after cell detachment, while treatment with SAHA or TRAIL alone did not produce these effects. Two main types of approaches exist for implementing cooperative communications at the MAC layer: virtual-hop relay and cooperative retransmission.
