RAB3GAP1 and RAB3GAP2 modulate basal and rapamycin-induced autophagy

2014

Macroautophagy is a degradative pathway that sequesters and transports cytosolic cargo in autophagosomes to lysosomes, and its deterioration affects intracellular proteostasis. Membrane dynamics accompanying autophagy are mostly elusive and depend on trafficking processes. RAB GTPase activating proteins (RABGAPs) are important factors for the coordination of cellular vesicle transport systems, and several TBC (TRE2-BUB2-CDC16) domain-containing RABGAPs are associated with autophagy. Employing C. elegans and human primary fibroblasts, we show that RAB3GAP1 and RAB3GAP2, which are components of the TBC domain-free RAB3GAP complex, influence protein aggregation and affect autophagy at basal an…

The craniofacial necrotizing fasciitis after a minor trauma in an elderly white woman

2014

The term necrotizing fasciitis /NF/ was probably first described by Jones in 1871 as “hospital gangrene”. NF, with its fast spreading from the local infection to massive necrosis of the underlying tissues, ie. superficial fascia and subcutaneous layers, is a potentially fatal disease, unless diagnosed early and properly treated. NF is more frequent in frail patients with chronic debilitating illnesses, immune deficiencies or from a poor social background. Sixty percent of NF cases occur in females. Here we present a case of necrotizing fasciitis of the head and neck region after a minor trauma (phenol blocks due to severe neuropathic pain) in an 82-year-old female with the history of trigem…

Neuromuscular mechanics and hopping training in elderly.

2014

Purpose The present study examined the effects of repetitive hopping training on muscle activation profiles and fascicle–tendon interaction in the elderly. Methods 20 physically active elderly men were randomly assigned for training (TG) and control groups (CG). TG performed supervised bilateral short contact hopping training with progressively increasing training volume. Measurements were performed before the training period (BEF) as well as after 2 weeks (2 W) and 11 weeks (11 W) of training. During measurements, the gastrocnemius medialis–muscle (GaM) fascicle and its outer Achilles tendon length changes during hopping were examined by ultrasonography together with electromyographic (EMG…

Quaternary ammonium polyiodides as ionic liquid/soft solid electrolytes in dye-sensitized solar cells

2007

Abstract Four new quaternary ammonium iodides, (Me 2 Pe 2 N)I, (Me 2 Hex 2 N)I, (Et 2 Pe 2 N)I and (Et 2 Hex 2 N)I, were synthesized and studied as electrolytes in dye-sensitized solar cells. All compounds were solids at room temperature. Influence of varying amounts of elemental iodine and the effect of tert -butylpyridine (TBP) on the performance of the cell was also studied. Addition of iodine lowered the melting points of the resulting polyiodides. From the ammonium iodides only (Me 2 Hex 2 N)I:I 2 (10:1) was liquid at the room temperature and the others were soft solids. Under illumination from a halogen lamp source at 10 mW cm −2 intensity, the highest power conversion efficiency of 2…

π-Extended Pyrene-Fused Double [7]Carbohelicene as a Chiral Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon

2019

A π-extended double [7]carbohelicene 2 with fused pyrene units was synthesized, revealing considerable intra- and intermolecular π–π interactions as confirmed with X-ray crystallography. As compared to the previous double [7]carbohelicene 1, the π-extended homologue 2 demonstrated considerably red-shifted absorption with an onset at 645 nm (1: 550 nm) corresponding to a smaller optical gap of 1.90 eV (1: 2.25 eV). A broad near-infrared emission from 600 to 900 nm with a large Stokes shift of ∼100 nm (2.3 × 103 cm–1) was recorded for 2, implying formation of an intramolecular excimer upon excitation, which was corroborated with femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Moreover, 2 revea…

Viability costs of condition-dependent sexual male display in a drumming wolf spider

1996

According to the conditional handicap models females use male ornaments as honest signals of male viability. The assumptions for honest signalling are that the traits are costly and that they reflect male phenotypic condition, and hence optimal trait size is largest in the most viable males. However, experimental evidence for the costs of signalling are scarce. In this study we experimentally tested whether acoustic signalling, drumming, in a wolf spider Hygrolycosa rubrofasciata is a condition dependent, costly trait, and thus offers an honest signal of quality to females. Males of this species court females by drumming dry leaves with their abdomen. Females prefer to mate with males of hi…

Mate choice for offspring performance: major benefits or minor costs?

1998

There is considerable disagreement over whether or not gaining viability benefits to offspring could be substantial enough to overcome the costs of female choosiness. A recent review suggested that the 'lek paradox' might be resolved by large indirect benefits as indicated by highly heritable ornamental traits. We selected males of a wolf spider Hygrolycosa rubrofasciata in relation to their sexual signalling rate (audible drumming). The estimated correlated response in offspring viability was rather small (0.12 s.d.). However, it may be large enough if the costs of being choosy are small. In fact, females mate with better-than-average males just by responding passively to a random drumming…
