Fourier-Accelerated Polymer Dynamics

1994

Fourier acceleration methods are applied to simulations of two-dimensional isolated ring polymers of up to N = 64 monomers. Three simulation schemes are compared: (i) a simple Langevin simulation with local updating, (ii) a Langevin algorithm with Fourier acceleration, and (iii) a Fourier accelerated Langevin algorithm combined with Metropolis acceptance of the moves (Force Biased Monte Carlo). In contrast to (i) and (ii), method (iii) is not hampered by systematic discretization errors, which, in case (ii), seem to grow systematically with chain length N. The results on the correlation time 4 are not very accurate, however, the data are in rough agreement with τ s N z with z= 2.5 (Rouse mo…

The Status of the Ultra Fast Flash Observatory - Pathfinder

2012

On behalf of the UFFO Collaboration; International audience; The Ultra Fast Flash Observatory (UFFO) is a project to study early optical emissions from Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs). The primary scientific goal of UFFO is to see if GRBs can be calibrated with their rising times, so that they could be used as new standard candles. In order to minimize delay in optical follow-up measurements, which is now about 100 sec after trigger from the Swift experiment, we rotate a mirror to redirect light path so that optical measurement can be performed within a second after the trigger. We have developed a pathfinder mission, UFFO-pathfinder to launch on board the Lomonosov satellite in 2012. In this talk,…

Cosmological Applications of Extended Electromagnetism

2013

Extended electromagnetism (EE) has been applied to cosmology in various papers. In all of them, the zero order energy density of the EE vector field plays the same role as vacuum energy. Perturbations of this field have been studied by using different approaches. Firstly, some basic equations and ideas are summarized and, then, the CMBFAST code is used to calculate the cosmic microwave background angular power spectrum for appropriate values of the EE parameters. Comparisons of the resulting spectra with a good observational one compatible with WMAP7 (Wilkinson map anisotropy probe 7 years data) seem to be promising. We are currently looking for a set of parameters leading to the best fitti…

Probing ultrafast thermalization with field-free molecular alignment

2012

International audience; The rotation-translation thermalization of CO2 gas is investigated 500 ps after its preheating by a nonresonant short and intense laser pulse. The temperature of thermalization is optically determined with two additional short laser pulses enabling a field-free molecular alignment process and its probing, respectively. The measurements are performed for various intensities of the preheat pulse, leading to the observation of different temperatures which are in very good agreement with classical molecular dynamics simulations. The results can be regarded as a step towards real-time tracking of ultrafast relaxation pathways in molecular motion.

A facility for fast-neutron irradiations at Jyväskylä and its use for nuclide cross-section measurements in fission

2013

Abstract An efficient and reliable transport system for fast-neutron irradiations has been built at the Physics Department, Jyvaskyla, Finland. It is constructed from commercial bicycle components and is driven by a computer-controlled stepping motor. It can be operated in single or cyclic mode. The neutron irradiated targets are moved within 1.2 s (full stop to full stop) to a well-shielded position 3 m away where they can be removed or directly investigated by γ spectroscopy. The system has been built with the aim to experimentally verify the calculated production rates of neutron-rich nuclei in the SPIRAL2 uranium target. However, the facility can be used for various kinds of fast-neutro…

Acceptor Concentration Dependence of Förster Resonance Energy Transfer Dynamics in Dye–Quantum Dot Complexes

2014

The dynamics of the photoinduced Forster resonance energy transfer (FRET) in a perylene diimide–quantum dot organic–inorganic hybrid system has been investigated by femtosecond time-resolved absorption spectroscopy. The bidentate binding of the dye acceptor molecules to the surface of CdSe/CdS/ZnS multishell quantum dots provides a well-defined dye-QD geometry for which the efficiency of the energy transfer reaction can be easily tuned by the acceptor concentration. In the experiments, the spectral characteristics of the chosen FRET pair facilitate a selective photoexcitation of the quantum dot donor. Moreover, the acceptor related transient absorption change that occurs solely after energy…

Separation by FPLC chromatofocusing of UDP-glucosyltransferases from three developmental stages of Drosophila melanogaster.

1997

Variation of UDP-glucosyltransferase activity, during Drosophila melanogaster development, was analyzed. The endogenous metabolite xanthurenic acid and the xenobiotic compounds 1-naphthol and 2-naphthol were used as substrates. Developmentally regulated differences were observed for the three substrates, suggesting the presence of UDP-glucosyltransferase isoenzymes. This was further confirmed by FPLC chromatofocusing on a Mono P column: seven peaks of UDP-glucosyltransferase activity (pHs: ≥6.3, 5.8, 5.5, 4.9, 4.5, 4.2, ≤4.0) with either single or overlapping substrate specificity were detected. A single xanthurenic acid:UDP-glucosyltransferase activity (pl 5.8) was found throughout develop…
