Extracorporeal circuit heparinization in selective low density lipoprotein apheresis: changes in patient hemostasis and low molecular weight heparin …

1993

Treatment by low density lipoprotein (LDL) apheresis using dextran sulfate columns (DSC) leads to hemostasis alterations with prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) of more than 120 seconds. In order to explain this hypocoagulability, we studied hemostasis parameters both in patients and in the extracorporeal circulation (ECC). Hemostasis changes are first related to unfractionated heparin (UFH)—needed to avoid circuit coagulation—which leads to high residual heparinemia in the patient (more than 3 times the recommended level for therapeutic use). Second, the hypocoagulability is induced by a coagulation factor decrease (primarily factors V, VIH, and X) mainly due to an adso…

Bile salt-stimulated lipase activity in human colostrum from mothers of infants of different gestational age and birthweight.

1987

. The bile salt-stimulated lipase (BSSL) activity was measured in milk collected at 3–4 days postpartum (colostrum) from 36 mothers divided into three groups according to gestational age and birthweight of their infants. BSSL activity changed with the length of gestation. Preterm colostrum presented a mean activity significantly higher than the term groups (small-for-gestational age and appropriate-for-gestational age) which had similar values. The ratio of BSSL activity to the estimated fat content was 6.33 in colostrum of mothers who delivered preterm and 4.20 in colostrum of both groups of term mothers. These data suggest that preterm colostrum has a higher fat digesting potential than t…

Lower insulin sensitivity differentiates hirsute from non-hirsute Sicilian women with polycystic ovary syndrome

2006

Objective: It is well known that hyperandrogenism and insulin-resistance with or without compensatory hyperinsulinism are closely associated, but the Rotterdam Consensus has concluded that principally obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) should be evaluated for the metabolic syndrome. Our aim was to study insulin sensitivity in PCOS women with hirsutism regardless of obesity. Methods: Clinical characteristics, sex hormones and fasting- and after OGTT-glycemia and insulinemia, homeostatic model of insulin resistance (HOMA IR), and Matsuda index of insulin sensitivity were analyzed in 130 women with PCOS. Hirsutism has been evaluated through the Ferriman–Gallwey (FG) map scoring …

Peripheral androgen blockade versus glandular androgen suppression in the treatment of hirsutism.

1991

Hirsutism in women is often explained on the basis of abnormal peripheral androgen metabolism. To determine whether serum markers of ovarian, adrenal, or peripheral androgen production may be helpful determinants in the treatment of hirsutism and to compare the efficacy of treatment with dexamethasone or spironolactone, 20 hyperandrogenic hirsute patients were treated for up to 2 years. Eleven women who were selected on the basis of sensitivity to dexamethasone were treated with a daily dose of 0.37 mg dexamethasone and had androgen levels suppressed into the normal range. Although significant (P less than .05), Ferriman-Gallwey scores decreased only by 20%: 14.2 +/- 0.5 to 11.4 +/- 0.6. Ni…

Neuromuscular fatigue induced by a 90-minute soccer game modeling.

2012

This study aimed to quantify neuromuscular fatigue induced by a soccer game. Eight amateur soccer players (age 20.4 ± 1.3 years, mass 70.4 ± 6.9 kg, and height 174.9 ± 5.2 cm) reproduced a 90-minute soccer game modeling composed of two 45-minute periods separated by a 15-minute rest. Torque of quadriceps and hamstring muscle groups associated with electromyography, sprint speed, and vertical jump height was assessed before, at halftime, and immediately after the modeling. Most physical qualities decreased throughout the game with greater decays at match end than at halftime. Contrarily to quadriceps muscles, hamstring torque impairments were not accompanied by electromyographic activity red…

Effect of fatigue on the precision of a whole-body pointing task.

2005

We addressed the issue of the possible degradation of the aiming precision of a whole-body pointing task, when movement coordination is deranged by selective fatigue of the postural task component. The protocol involved continuous repetition (0.1 Hz frequency) of rapid whole-body pointing trials toward a target located beyond arm length, starting from stance and requiring knee flexion. Six healthy human subjects repeated the trials until exhaustion. Such repetition led to electromyography signs of fatigue in rectus femoris (active in body lowering and raising), but not in deltoid (prime mover for arm reaching component). Rectus femoris fatigue affected the equilibrium control strategy, sinc…

Development and testing of new screening method for keratan sulfate in mucopolysaccharidosis IVA.

2004

Mucopolysaccharidosis IVA (MPS IVA), a progressive lysosomal storage disease, causes skeletal dysplasia through excessive storage of keratan sulfate (KS). We developed an ELISA-sandwich assay that used a MAb specific to KS. Forty-five blood and 59 urine specimens from MPS IVA patients (ages 1–65 y) were analyzed to determine whether KS concentration is a suitable marker for early diagnosis and longitudinal assessment of disease severity. Blood specimens were obtained from patients categorized as phenotypically severe (n = 36) and milder (n = 9). Urine specimens were also analyzed from patients categorized as severe (n = 56) and milder (n = 12), respectively. Blood KS levels (101–1525 ng/mL)…

Uterine leiomyoma metastasis as a first sign of breast cancer

1998

Uterine metastases from extragenital cancer are rarely reported in the literature. More frequently, the female genital tract is involved by direct extension from an adjacent pelvic organ. A 37-year-old woman had a myoma of the uterine wall and hypermenorrhea. The mass was laparoscopically enucleated, and frozen section examination was performed because it was macroscopically suspicious for sarcomatoid degeneration. The final diagnosis was metastatic carcinoma in the uterus of probable breast origin.

Preeclampsia and gestational weight gain in the Norwegian Fit for Delivery trial

2018

Abstract Objective Excessive gestational weight gain is linked to risk of preeclampsia, but it is not clear whether the association is causal. The purpose of this paper was to examine gestational weight gain in the Norwegian Fit for Delivery study among women who developed preeclampsia compared to those who did not, and to further explore associations between weight gain and preeclampsia by including data on body composition (bioimpedance) assessed in the last trimester of pregnancy. Results A total of 550 women were eligible for the study. Women who developed preeclampsia gained more weight than women who did not (difference 3.7 kg, p = 0.004), with a 3.5 kg difference in total body water …

Treatment of hyperandrogenic alopecia in women

2003

Many women with androgenic alopecia have normal circulating androgen levels. Increased scalp sensitivity to androgens may account for these cases. Even when androgen levels are increased, no particular pattern has emerged. Classical anti-androgen measures have proved disappointing, in contrast to the results obtained in women with hirsutism or acne. This study evaluated flutamide and finasteride in 36 premenopausal, hyperandrogenic women presenting with androgenic alopecia. Frontal hair thinning was assessed in photos of the frontoparietal region using the Ludwig grading system. Thirty ovulatory women matched for age and body weight served as a control group. Groups of 12 subjects received …
