Colorectal cancer is an increasingly important cause of death in Western countries. Endocannabinoids inhibit colorectal carcinoma cell proliferation in vitro. In this paper, we investigated the involvement of endocannabinoids on the formation of aberrant crypt foci (ACF, earliest preneoplastic lesions) in the colon mouse in vivo. The archaebacterium Thermoplasma acidophilum is cultivated at 59 degrees C in a medium containing sulfuric acid of pH 2. The purified bipolar membrane spanning main phospholipid (MPL) of this organism can be used to produce stable liposomes of 100-500 nm in diameter either using a French pressure cell detergent dialysis or sonication. High-fat diets may have favourable effects on growth of some carnivorous fish because of the protein-sparing effect of lipids, but high-fat diets also exert some negative impacts on flesh quality. The goal of the study was therefore to determine the effects of fat-enriched diets in juvenile grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) as a typical herbivorous fish on growth and possible lipid metabolism alterations. Abstract Objective The bulk of LDL entrapped in the arterial intima is modified by hydrolytic enzymes, leading to extensive cleavage of cholesterylesters and liberation of fatty acids. The latter induce apoptosis in endothelial cells but are far less cytotoxic towards macrophages. We have compared the cytotoxic effects of enzymatically modified LDL (E-LDL) on macrophages and polymorphonuclear granulocytes (PMN). Background Cancer cells present a sustained de novo fatty acid synthesis with an increase of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) production. This change in fatty acid metabolism is associated with overexpression of stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 (Scd1), which catalyses the transformation of saturated fatty acids into monounsaturated fatty acids (e.g., oleic acid). The peroxisomal beta oxidation of very long chain fatty acids (VLCFA) leads to the formation of medium chain acyl-CoAs such as octanoyl-CoA. Today, it seems clear that the exit of shortened fatty acids produced by the peroxisomal beta oxidation requires their conversion into acyl-carnitine and the presence of the carnitine octanoyltransferase (CROT). Here, we describe the consequences of an overexpression and a knock down of the CROT gene in terms of mitochondrial and peroxisomal fatty acids metabolism in a model of hepatic cells. Host microbiota constantly control maturation and function of microglia in the CNS.

As the tissue macrophages of the CNS, microglia are critically involved in diseases of the CNS. However, it remains unknown what controls their maturation and activation under homeostatic conditions. We observed substantial contributions of the host microbiota to microglia homeostasis, as germ-free (GF) mice displayed global defects in microglia with altered cell proportions and an immature phenotype, leading to impaired innate immune responses. Influence of lipid physical state on the in vitro digestibility of emulsified lipids.

The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of the physical state of emulsified lipids on their in vitro digestibility by pancreatic lipase. A 10 wt % tripalmitin oil-in-water emulsion stabilized by sodium dodecyl sulfate (0.9 wt % SDS) was prepared at a temperature (>70 degrees C) above the melting point of the lipid phase (T(m) approximately 60 degrees C).
