Lack of phenotypic additive effect of familial defective apolipoprotein B3531 in familial hypercholesterolaemia.

2020

Familial defective apolipoprotein (apo) B (FDB) and familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) are the two common genetic conditions that cause hypercholesterolaemia. R3531C mutation of the APOB gene is a rare cause of FDB. Individuals with both FDB and FH are rare. A 51-year-old man with hypercholesterolaemia (11.4 mmol/L) and his family were studied. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor (LDLR) and APOB genes were analysed by direct sequencing. LDL of four subjects were studied in a fibroblast LDL receptor-binding displacement assay. We found a mutation of the LDLR gene (p.Y398X) in the proband and in four other family members: the p.R3531C APOB gene mutation was also found in the proband, his …

A narrative review on the implementation of liquid biopsy as a diagnostic tool in thoracic tumors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

2021

Objective: In this review, we evaluate the role of liquid biopsy in managing lung cancer patients during the still ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) healthcare emergency. Background: The novel influenza coronavirus (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus or SARSCoV-2) has upended several aspects of our lives, including medical activities. In this setting, many routine cancer diagnostic and therapeutic procedures have been suspended, leading to delays in diagnosis, treatments, and, ultimately, increases in cancer mortality rates. Equally drastic has been the impact of COVID-19 on clinical trials, many of which have been stalled or have never begun. This has left many patient…

Algebraic time-reversal operation

1999

International audience; We analyze the implementation of the time-reversal (TR) transformation in the algebraic approach to tetrahedral local molecules through the chain of groups U(5) U(4) K(4) = A(4) ^ S(4) S(4) Td. We determine the general form of the TR operation using a purely algebraic realization, based exclusively on the requirement that the irreducible representations must not be changed under the time inversion symmetry. As a result we can determine the TR behavior of purely algebraic operators.

QR-Factorization Algorithm for Computed Tomography (CT): Comparison With FDK and Conjugate Gradient (CG) Algorithms

2018

[EN] Even though QR-factorization of the system matrix for tomographic devices has been already used for medical imaging, to date, no satisfactory solution has been found for solving large linear systems, such as those used in computed tomography (CT) (in the order of 106 equations). In CT, the Feldkamp, Davis, and Kress back projection algorithm (FDK) and iterative methods like conjugate gradient (CG) are the standard methods used for image reconstruction. As the image reconstruction problem can be modeled by a large linear system of equations, QR-factorization of the system matrix could be used to solve this system. Current advances in computer science enable the use of direct methods for…

The effect of Water on passive cooling systems in the Arab-Norman architecture of the Zisa Palace in Palermo

2019

This paper shows the theories argued by some historians with reference to the working of natural water passive cooling systems employed in the Zisa Complex. Albeit such theories are seminal attempts to understand passive water systems, they have no scientific evidence. This study instead concentrates on a more rigorous treatment that enabled to set up a robust framework for designing a historical water passive system such as the Salsabil, which in fact was conceived and developed in an empirical way. Several historical buildings of the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern architecture include relevant artefacts useful to control humidity and temperature through water passive systems . The archi…

Improving the rheometry of rubberized bitumen: experimental and computation fluid dynamics studies

2017

Abstract Multi-phase materials are common in several fields of engineering and rheological measurements are intensively adopted for their development and quality control. Unfortunately, due to the complexity of these materials, accurate measurements can be challenging. This is the case of bitumen-rubber blends used in civil engineering as binders for several applications such as asphalt concrete for road pavements but recently also for roofing membranes. These materials can be considered as heterogeneous blends of fluid and particles with different densities. Due to this nature the two components tends to separate and this phenomenon can be enhanced with inappropriate design and mixing. Thi…
