Evaluation of the diagnostic performances of two commercially available assays for the detection of enteric adenovirus antigens

The performance of 2 antigenic commercial assays for enteric adenovirus (AdV) infection, bioNexia Rota-Adeno ImmunoChromatographic Tests (ICT) and LIAISON® Adenovirus ChemiLuminescence Immuno Assays (CLIA), was evaluated on 321 stools from children hospitalized for acute gastroenteritis in Palermo, Italy, using a Real time-PCR (Rt-PCR) as reference method. The CLIA showed higher sensitivity (77% vs 60%), accuracy (94.4 vs 90.9) and concordance (k: 0.81 vs 0.67) with respect to ICT, despite equivalent specificity (98.8%). Microbiological and safety evaluation of green table olives marketed in Italy

The microbiological and safety conditions of green table olives sold on the Italian market were evaluated on 40 samples, 20 loose and 20 packed in containers, purchased at street markets and supermarkets. The olives were analyzed for microflora and food safety indices, and for aflatoxin B1 and ochratoxin A occurrence, and the results showed acceptable security. There was wide heterogeneity in the microflora, the numerical values being in relation to the olive type. Programmed colorectal cancer screening decreases incidence and mortality

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer- related deaths in the world (1). Detecting and removing precancerous lesions or detecting tumors in early stages through endoscopy decreases CRC mortality (2). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have shown that CRC screening based on guaiac fecal occult blood testing (gFOBT) and flexible sigmoidoscopy is effective in reducing incidence and mortality rates of CRC (3).
