Differences in Inter-Rectus Distance and Abdominopelvic Function between Nulliparous, Primiparous and Multiparous Women

2021

Widening of the inter-rectus distance (IRD) is highly prevalent among postpartum women and can lead to dysfunction of abdominopelvic muscles. The aim of this study was to evaluate the differences in IRD and abdominopelvic function between nulliparous, primiparous and multiparous women. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 75 women (25 nulliparous, 25 primiparous and 25 multiparous at 6 months postpartum). The participants underwent ultrasound assessment under three conditions (at rest, abdominal draw-in maneuver (ADIM) and curl-up) at two locations (2 cm above and 2 cm below the umbilicus). Furthermore, abdominopelvic muscle function was determined by prone, supine and side bridge tests…

Microvascular obstruction in the right ventricle in reperfused anterior myocardial infarction. Macroscopic and pathologic evidence in a swine model.

2013

article i nfo Introduction: Data on right ventricular (RV) involvement in anterior myocardial infarction are scarce. The presence of RV microvascular obstruction (MVO) in this context has not been analyzed yet. The aim of the present study was to characterize the presence of MVO in the RV in a controlled experimental swine model of reperfused anterior myocardial infarction. Materials and Methods: Left anterior descending (LAD) artery-perfused area (thioflavin-S staining after selective infusioninLADartery),infarctsize(lackof triphenyltetrazolium-chloride staining) andMVO (lack of thioflavin-S staininginthe core oftheinfarctedarea) inthe RVwere studied.A quantitative(%of theventricularvolume…

Effects of BIS076 in a model of osteoarthritis induced by anterior cruciate ligament transection in ovariectomised rats

2015

Background Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most frequent articular disease and a leading cause of disability. There is a need for effective treatments able to slow the progression of disease. Some of the available treatments are dietary supplements providing natural components. Recent studies have shown that estrogen deficiency contributes to the pathophysiological events of OA progression. Methods We have used the anterior cruciate ligament transection model of OA in ovariectomised rats to study the effects of BIS076, a new formulation of a natural porcine cartilage extract associated with hydroxyapatite (as a source of calcium) and vitamin D3. Cartilage degradation, proteoglycan depletion and …

OneShot-M: A New Device for Close Laparoscopy Pneumoperitoneum

2018

Introduction. The induction of pneumoperitoneum is the first and most critical phase of laparoscopy, due to the significant risk of serious vascular and visceral complications. The closed technique for the creation of pneumoperitoneum could lead to several surgical complications. The present study aimed to overcome the complications associated with the insertion of Veress needle, improving its use, and facilitating the rapid creation of pneumoperitoneum. Methods. Thirty large white female pigs were enrolled in our study. A common plunger was modified in order to allow the passage of a 15-cm long Veress needle. This method was applied to 26 laparoscopic procedures (26 pigs) of several speci…

A pig model of hepatic cryotherapy. In vivo temperature distribution during freezing and histopathological changes

2003

We aimed to assess the temperature distribution in the cryolesion during hepatic cryotherapy and the association with postoperative histological changes to optimise the technique and allow better preoperative planning. Hepatic cryolesions were produced in 22 pigs following laparotomy using a CMS-cryosystem and 8mm-AccuProbe-Cryoprobes. The temperature was measured in 1 min intervals at different distances from the probe during freezing. The animals were treated in 5 groups: (i) single freezing of 20 min; (ii) double freezing of 20 min each; (iii) single freezing of 40 min; (iv) single freezing of 20 min (n=4), histology at 1 week p.o., and (v) single freezing of 20 min and Pringle manoeuvre…

Modulatory action of acetylcholine on cerebrovascular sympathetic neurotransmission

1991

1. Acetylcholine (10 micrograms/min) diminished the electrically-induced cerebral blood flow reductions. Atropine (1-2 mg) partially blocked this inhibitory effect. 2. Exogenously administered noradrenaline (1-10 micrograms) and tyramine (50-500 micrograms) reduced cerebral blood flow but this effect was unchanged by acetylcholine infusion. 3. Acetylcholine inhibited the nonadrenergic component of the electrically-induced contraction at a concentration greater than or equal to 10(-6) M and potentiated the adrenergic component at a concentration greater than or equal to 10(5) M. Atropine 10(-7) M) inhibited both of these effects. In addition, acetylcholine (10(-4) M) enhanced the electricall…

Renal artery denervation for treating resistant hypertension: Definition of the disease, patient selection and description of the procedure

2012

Arterial hypertension is responsible for a significant burden of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, worldwide. Although several rational and integrated pharmacological strategies are available, the control of high blood pressure still remains largely unsatisfactory. Failure to achieve effective blood pressure control in treated hypertensive patients may have a substantial impact on individual global cardiovascular risk, since it significantly increases the risk of developing hypertension-related macrovascular and microvascular complications. Arterial hypertension is arbitrarily defined as 'resistant' or 'refractory' when the recommended blood pressure goals (clinic blood pressure below…
