Intravitreal dexamethasone implant for cystoid macular edema and inflammation after scleral buckling
2015
Purpose Cystoid macular edema may occur following scleral buckling and therefore deteriorate the visual outcome. Inflammation may be the major causative factor in the development of postoperative cystoid macular edema. This case demonstrates the effectiveness of a dexamethasone implant as a treatment after the onset of choroidal inflammation and cystoid macular edema 6 months following scleral buckling and having visual acuity restored. Methods A 59-year-old phakic woman treated with scleral buckling for macula-off retinal detachment presented 2 months after surgery with cystoid macular edema with choroidal inflammation. Optical coherence tomography and fluorescein angiography were performe…

Der Einsatz der Tumorprothese bei sekundär-neoplastischer Destruktion des proximalen Femurendes
2008
Total hip arthroplasty was performed with PMMA-augmented tumor prostheses in 42 individuals suffering from metastatic destruction of the proximal end of the femur at the Orthopedic University Hospital Mainz from 1980 to 1992. Neoplastic lesions had been triggered by carcinomas of the breast in 25 female patients. 24 of our patients presented with pathologic fractures. In all patients capable of walking preoperatively early mobilization could be attained by total hip arthroplasty. Pain relief was achieved in each patient. Resection of the major trochanter and, partially, of the pelvitrochanteric muscle sleeve entailed luxation of the prosthesis six times in 5 individuals during the first pos…
p53 Involvement in the control of murine hair follicle regression.
2001
p53 is a transcription factor mediating a variety of biological responses including apoptotic cell death. p53 was recently shown to control apoptosis in the hair follicle induced by ionizing radiation and chemotherapy, but its role in the apoptosis-driven physiological hair follicle regression (catagen) remains to be elucidated. Here, we show that p53 protein is strongly expressed and co-localized with apoptotic markers in the regressing hair follicle compartments during catagen. In contrast to wild-type mice, p53 knockout mice show significant retardation of catagen accompanied by significant decrease in the number of apoptotic cells in the hair matrix. Furthermore, p53 null hair follicles…
The world of twins: an update
2010
In last years, owing to the widespread availability of assisted-reproduction technology, multiple pregnancy rates in Western countries have increased. In twin pregnancies, an increased rate of gestational complications, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), preterm birth and severe perinatal conditions is present. These complications are more frequent in monozygotic twins compared to dizygotic twins as well as an increased relative risk of chromosomal abnormalities and congenital malformation. Monochorionic twins are at higher risk for complications, since they share a common placenta where an imbalance in unidirectional arteriovenous anastomoses can lead to twin#x2013;twin transfusion sy…
Shared Genetic and Environmental Effects on Strength and Power in Older Female Twins
2005
Purpose: This study examined the relative contribution of genetic and environmental effects on maximal leg extensor power and also investigated whether leg extensor power and maximum voluntary isometric knee extensor strength share a genetic component. Methods: Muscle functions were measured as part of the Finnish Twin Study on Aging in 101 monozygotic (MZ) and 116 dizygotic (DZ) female twin pairs aged 63–76 yr. Leg extensor power was measured using the Nottingham Leg Extensor Power Rig and maximum voluntary isometric knee extensor strength using an adjustable dynamometer chair. The analyses were carried out using the maximum likelihood method in Mx-program on the raw data set. Results: A b…
Normal Doppler Reference Values of the Pericallosal Artery
2015
Purpose: To provide the normal reference values of the Doppler flow of the pericallosal artery in relation to gestational age from 18 to 41 weeks of gestation. Materials and Methods: The pericallosal artery (PCA) was studied in 466 normal pregnancies. The pulsed Doppler evaluation of the pericallosal artery was done in A3 and A4 segments, and records from PI, RI and Vmax were studied. Results: The resistance index of the pericallosal artery in A3 / A4 segments exhibits a plateau from 18 to 31 weeks of gestation. After 31 weeks, a marked decrease becomes apparent. The pulsatility index of the pericallosal artery in A3 / A4 segments shows a plateau until 36 weeks of gestation. During the fina…
Glucose-induced loss of glycosyl-phosphatidylinositol-anchored membrane regulators of complement activation (CD59, CD55) by in vitro cultured human u…
2000
Aims/hypothesis. This study examines whether increased glucose concentrations are responsible for a decreased expression of membrane regulators of complement activation molecules. The effect of high glucose in determining an increase in membrane attack complex deposition on endothelial cells was also investigated. Methods. Endothelial cells were isolated from umbilical cord tissue, cultured in the presence of increased concentrations of glucose, and the expression of CD46, CD55, and CD59 was detected by ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) and by flow cytometry. Glucose-treated endothelial cells were also incubated with antiendothelial cell antibodies and fresh complement to assess the…
Primary malignant PEComa of the mandible. Report of an unusual case
2021
Malignant PEComa is a rare entity that usually origins at visceral, retroperitoneal and abdominopelvic sites. In the present paper, we describe an extremely unusual manifestation of malignant PEComa involving the mandible in a 48 years-old female patient focusing on the anatomopathological findings and differential diagnosis. The therapeutic management based on the head and neck tumor board indications is also discussed. Key words:Malignant PEComa, PEComa of the mandible, PEComa pathology, Oral cavity unusual neoplasm.
