Sisters of the Brotherhood: Alienation and Inclusion in Learning Philosophy
2023
This open access book explores the gendered reality of learning philosophy at the university level, investigating the ways in which women and minority students become alienated from the social practices of a male-dominated field, and examining pedagogical solutions to this problem. It covers the roles and the interactions of the professor and student in the following ways: (1) the historical situation, (2) the affective, social and bodily situation, and (3) the moral situation. This text analyzes women’s passion for philosophy as a quest for truth, as well as their partial alienation from the social practices of philosophy. It demonstrates that recognition, generosity, and care are central …
Mondon mannekiineja vai tartanin trendsettereitä? : urheilun kaupallistumisen vaikutus naisurheilijoiden ulkoasuun
2008
Pro gradu –työni käsittelee naisyleisurheilijoiden näkemyksiä heidän käyttämistään urheiluvaatteista. Aineisto on kerätty haastattelemalla 10 suomalaista naisyleisurheilijaa kesän 2007 aikana. Tutkimuksen tehtävänä on selvittää, kuinka naisurheilijat voivat vaikuttaa heidän käyttämiinsä urheiluvaatteisiin, kuinka vaatteet vaikuttavat urheilusuoritukseen sekä mitkä tekijät vaikuttavat yleensä vaatevalintaan. Varsinaisten tutkimustehtävien ratkaisemisen lisäksi tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on parantaa naisurheilijoiden asemaa sekä tuoda heidän äänensä kuuluviin. Tutkimus on tehty urheilufeministisestä näkökulmasta. Se heijastuu menetelmien, teoreettisen viitekehyksen sekä tutkimustehtävien valin…
Perceived goal setting practices across a competitive season
2019
Goal setting is an effective and frequently used tool for performance enhancement in sports. However, in the previous studies, the focus has been on goal effectiveness among individual male athletes and at one point in time. Therefore, the purpose of this longitudinal study was to examine goal setting practices in women’s sport teams across a competitive season from players’ individual and team perspectives. A total of 146 female players representing 24 teams in ice hockey, ringette, or floorball completed three online surveys. Surveys focused on setting outcome, process, and performance goals, as well as evaluating the follow-through of setting goals and actually reaching these goals acro…
"Successful and feminine athlete" and "natural-born fighter" : a discursive exploration of female judoka's identities in Greece and Finland
2018
Despite feminist concerns about the asymmetrical distribution of power in martial arts and combat sports (MACS), sport psychology research has overlooked issues of inequality and socio-cultural difference, as well as their effects on athletes’ experiences and identity negotiation. The present doctoral dissertation explores the intersection of gender, culture, and identity in judo through the lens of cultural praxis and feminist poststructuralist frameworks. The aim was to explore in what ways the cultural context shapes the experiences and identities of female judoka (judo athletes). Two specific objectives were set: to trace the discourses (systems of knowledge) through which female judoka…
Biocompatible Lipid Nanoparticles as Carriers to Improve Curcumin Efficacy in Ovarian Cancer Treatment
2017
Curcumin is a natural molecule with proved anticancer efficacy on several human cancer cell lines. However, its clinical application has been limited due to its poor bioavailability. Nanocarrier-based drug delivery approaches could make curcumin dispersible in aqueous media, thus overtaking the limits of its low solubility. The aim of this study was to increase the bioavailability and the antitumoral activity of curcumin, by entrapping it into nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs). For this purpose here we describe the preparation and characterization of three kinds of curcumin-loaded NLCs. The nanosystems allowed the achievement of a controlled release of curcumin, the amounts of curcumin r…
