The syntheses, crystal structures and magnetic properties of four rhenium(IV) compounds of formulae NBu4[ReCl5(pyzCOOH)]·H2O (1), [ReCl5(µ-pyzCOO)M(dmphen)2]·2CH3CN [M = Ni (2) and Co (3)] and {[ReCl5(µ3-pyzCOO)]2Mn2(dmphen)3}n (4) (NBu4 = tetra-n-butylammonium cation, pyzCOOH = 2-pyrazinecarboxylic acid, dmphen = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline) are reported herein. Compound 1 was obtained by the reaction of NBu4[ReCl5(dmf)] (dmf = dimethylformamide) with pyzCOOH in acetone, whereas the other complexes were obtained by the reaction of 1 with M(ClO4)2·6H2O [M = Ni (2), Co (3), Mn (4)] and dmphen in acetonitrile. Design of bimetallic magnetic chains based on oxalate complexes: towards single chain magnets

We describe the synthesis, structure and magnetic characterization of several oxalate-based bimetallic 1D systems. We will exemplify how by suitable choice of the molecular building blocks and strict control of their arrangement in the solid state, the magnetic properties of these low-dimensional materials can be tuned to finally obtain bimetallic oxalate chains behaving as single-chain magnets (SCM). First, we will focus on compounds [K(18-crown-6)][MII(bpy)Cr(ox)3] (1, 2; MII = Mn, Co; bpy = C10N2H8). The MnCr derivative behaves as a 1D ferromagnet down to 2 K, the lowest investigated temperature. The lack of magnetic ordering in this chain prompted us to prepare the more anisotropic MnCo…

A carboxylate-bridged NiII8 cluster with a distorted cubane topology: structure, magnetism and density functional studies

Using a dicarboxylate ligand appended with (2-pyridyl)ethylamine unit, a new cluster [NiII8(L4)6(DMF)2(CH3OH)2(H2O)6][ClO4]4·2CH3OH·2CH3CO2C2H5 (1) [L4(2−): 3-[N-{2-(pyridin-2-yl)ethyl}amino]-bis(propionate)] has been synthesized, through ‘coordination-driven self-assembly’. The crystal structure of 1 reveals a centrosymmetric octanuclear carboxylate-bridged nickel(II) tetracation, with a distorted cubane topology. The four crystallographically independent nickel(II) centres differ markedly in their coordination environment. Abstract Reactions of stoichiometric amounts of L1(−) (HL1 = 3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazole) with [Cu(H2O)6](ClO4)2, with or without PhCO2−, in MeOH or N,N′-dimethylformamide (dmf), led to the isolation of three copper(II) complexes of varying nuclearity, [CuII2(L1)2(ClO4)2(MeOH)2] (1), [CuII4(L1)4(O2CPh)2(MeOH)4](ClO4)2·2H2O (2) and [CuII6(L1)6(O2CPh)2(ClO4)2(dmf)4](ClO4)2·2dmf·2H2O (3). Six novel one-dimensional chloro-bridged ReIVCuII complexes of formula {[Cu(L)4][ReCl6]}n, where L = imidazole (Imi, 1), 1-methylimidazole (Meim, 2), 1-vinylimidazole (Vim, 3), 1-butylimidazole (Buim, 4), 1-vinyl-1,2,4-triazole (Vtri, 5) and N,N’-dimethylformamide (DMF, 6) are characterised structurally, magnetically and theoretically. The structures exhibit significant differences in Cu–Cl bond lengths and Re–Cl–Cu bridging angles, resulting in large differences in the nature and magnitude of magnetic exchange interactions between the ReIV and CuII ions. International audience; We report on the syntheses, crystal structures, and magnetic properties of two cyano-bridged molecular assemblies: [CuII(phen)3]2{[CuII(phen)2]2[WV(CN)8]2}(ClO4)2·10H2O (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) (1) and {[CuII(bpy)2]2[WV(CN)8]} {[CuII(bpy)2][WV(CN)8]}·4H2O (bpy = 2,2′-bipyridyl) (2). The synthesis and magnetostructural characterization of [Fe(III)3(μ3-O)(H2O)3[Fe(II)(bppCOOH)(bppCOO)]6](ClO4)13·(CH3)2CO)6·(solvate) (2) are reported. This compound is obtained as a secondary product during synthesis of the mononuclear complex [Fe(II)(bppCOOH)2](ClO4)2 (1). The single-crystal X-ray diffraction structure of 2 shows that it contains the nonanuclear cluster of the formula [Fe(III)3(μ3-O)(H2O)3[Fe(II)(bppCOOH)(bppCOO)]6](13+), which is formed by a central Fe(III)3O core coordinated to six partially deprotonated [Fe(II)(bppCOOH)(bppCOO)](+) complexes. Reaction of the [Fe I I I (CN) 6 ] 3 - anion with [Cu I I (tn)(H 2 O) n ] 2 + (tn = 1,3-diaminopropane) affords the compounds [{Cu I I (tn)} 2 -{Fe I I (CN) 6 }].KCl.5H 2 O (1), [(Cu"(tn))2(Fe"(CN) 6 )].4H 2 O (2), and [{Cu I I (tnH) 2 (H 2 O) 2 }{Fe I I (CN) 6 }].2H 2 O (3). Each iron center in 1 and 2 is linked to six copper(II) ions by six cyanide bridges, while each copper ion is linked to three equivalent iron(II) ions.
