The impact of soil erosion on soil fertility and vine vigor. A multidisciplinary approach based on field, laboratory and remote sensing approaches
2018
Soil erosion processes in vineyards, beyond surface runoff and sediment transport, have a strong effect on soil organic carbon (SOC) loss and redistribution along the slope. Variation in SOC across the landscape can determine differences in soil fertility and vine vigor. The goal of this research was to analyze the interactions among vines vigor, sediment delivery and SOC in a sloping vineyard located in Sicily. Six pedons were studied along the slope by digging 6 pits up to 60 cm depth. Soil was sampled every 10 cm and SOC, water extractable organic carbon (WEOC) and specific ultraviolet absorbance (SUVA) were analyzed. Erosion rates, detachment and deposition areas were measured by the po…
Effects of soil management techniques on soil water erosion in apricot orchards.
2016
Soil erosion is extreme in Mediterranean orchards due to management impact, high rainfall intensities, steep slopes and erodible parent material. Vall d'Albaida is a traditional fruit production area which, due to the Mediterranean climate and marly soils, produces sweet fruits. However, these highly productive soils are left bare under the prevailing land management and marly soils are vulnerable to soil water erosion when left bare. In this paper we study the impact of different agricultural land management strategies on soil properties (bulk density, soil organic matter, soil moisture), soil water erosion and runoff, by means of simulated rainfall experiments and soil analyses. Three rep…
Alfalfa crops amended with MSW compost can compensate the effect of salty water irrigation depending on the soil texture
2018
The availability of water resources of marginal quality such as drainage water or high-saltcontaining groundwater is turning into an important issue in Tunisia and other countrieswith scarce water resources. A pot experiment was carried out to evaluate plant produc-tion, nutrient content and heavy metal bioaccumulation in agricultural soils amended withMSW compost and irrigated with salty water, by using two different soil textures (clay andsandy). Salt water supply decreased plant dry yield in both soils. Salt stress had signifi-cantly reduction in plant biomass in sandy soil compared to those in clay soil (biomass ofdry weight is significantly higher in clay soil than those in sandy soil …
Recent Developments in Understanding Biochar’s Physical–Chemistry
2021
Biochar is a porous material obtained by biomass thermal degradation in oxygen-starved conditions. It is nowadays applied in many fields. For instance, it is used to synthesize new materials for environmental remediation, catalysis, animal feeding, adsorbent for smells, etc. In the last decades, biochar has been applied also to soils due to its beneficial effects on soil structure, pH, soil organic carbon content, and stability, and, therefore, soil fertility. In addition, this carbonaceous material shows high chemical stability. Once applied to soil it maintains its nature for centuries. Consequently, it can be considered a sink to store atmospheric carbon dioxide in soils, thereby mitigat…
Demography and Economic Growth in Spain: A Time Series Analysis
2003
In this paper, advanced time series econometric tools are employed to test the existence of relationships among demographic and macroeconomic variables in Spain along the 1960-2000 period. Annual data for the total fertility rate, infant mortality rate, per capita gross domestic product and wages are used in the empirical analysis. We first examine the bivariate Granger causality to look for short run relations. Then, a multivariate cointegration analysis is carry out, showing that two long run relationships among the variables exist with statistically significant coefficients. From these cointegration vectors, the vector error correction model is estimated to test the endogenous or exogeno…

A systematic review of handheld tools in lieu of colposcopy for cervical neoplasia and female genital schistosomiasis
2020
Abstract Background Visualization of the lesions in the lower genital tract is the mainstay for diagnosis of the four lesions found in female genital schistosomiasis (FGS), but colposcopes are generally not available in low‐resource settings. Objective We sought to review handheld devices that could potentially be used for FGS diagnosis. Search strategy We searched Medline and Embase 2015–2019 for handheld devices used in cervical cancer screening and FGS diagnosis. Selection criteria We excluded studies that did not compare the device to standard‐of‐care colposcopes or histopathology. Main results and conclusion In 11 studies, four handheld colposcopes, two smartphones, and one compact dig…
What is your couple type? Gender ideology, housework sharing and babies
2014
BACKGROUND It is increasingly acknowledged that not only gender equality, but also gender ideology plays a role in explaining fertility in advanced societies. In a micro perspective, the potential mismatch between gender equality (i.e. the actual sharing taking place in a couple) and gender ideology (i.e. gender equality in attitudes, as proxy for gender equity), may drive childbearing decisions. OBJECTIVE This paper assesses the impact of consistency between gender equality in attitudes and equality in the division of household labour on the likelihood of having another child, for different parities. METHODS Relying on two-wave panel data of the Bulgarian, French, Czech, Hungarian and Lith…
Nutritional supplementation with myo-inositol-D-chiro-inositol: effect on reproductive system functionality in Long-term Survivors of Lymphoma
2022
Introduction/Background: The principal International scientific societies of oncology recommend that Long-term Survivors of Lymphoma join fertility programs. Therefore, we conducted a prospective observational controlled study, with the aim to assess the effects of oral supplementation with Myo-Inositol and D-Chiro-Inositol (MIC) on ovarian function parameters in Long-term Survivors of Lymphoma Methodology: Between January 2020 and January 2021, 90 female patients, long-term Survivors of Lymphoma with an average age of 34 years (range 25-44), were considered eligible and enrolled in the study (Figure 1). The study was registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (ID: NCT05410314). We conducted this stu…
