Respiratory Mechanics, Gastric Insufflation Pressure, and Air Leakage of the Laryngeal Mask Airway

A potential risk of the laryngeal mask airway (LMA) is incomplete mask seal, which causes air leakage or insufflation of air into the stomach. The objective of the present study was to assess respiratory mechanics, quantify air leakage, and measure gastric air insufflation in patients ventilated via the LMA. Thirty patients were studied after induction of anesthesia but prior to any surgical manipulations. After the insertion of the LMA, patients were ventilated with increasing tidal volumes until one of the three following end points were reached: 1) gastric air insufflation, 2) airway pressure > 40 cm H2O, or 3) limitation of further increase in tidal volume by air leakage. Plasma and fibroblasts of Tangier disease patients are disturbed in transferring phospholipids onto apolipoprotein A-I

Plasmas of patients with Tangier disease (TD) lack lipid-rich α-HDL which, in normal plasma, constitutes the majority of high density lipoprotein (HDL). Residual amounts of apolipoprotein (apo)A-I in TD plasma occur as lipid-poor or even lipid-free preβ-HDL. By contrast to normal plasma, TD plasma does not convert preβ-HDL into α-HDL. Moreover, fibroblasts of TD patients were found to be defective in secreting cholesterol or phospholipids in the presence of lipid-free apoA-I. Abstract Background For many adults, their role as a parent is a vital part of their lives. This role is likely to be associated with a parent’s health-related quality of life (HRQOL). The aim of this study was to explore the associations between gender, demographic and psychosocial variables, pain, and HRQOL in parents of 14–15-year-old adolescents. Background: Tuber aestivum Vittad., known as black summer truffle, represents high-value food especially used as garnishment in nouvelle cuisine. The aim of this study was to investigate on the viable microbial populations associated with T. aestivum ascomata collected in different sites of Sicily and one locality of Umbria (Italy).

A decade long monitoring programme has revealed a flourishing population of the non-indigenous skeleton shrimp Paracaprella pusilla in the vicinity of outfalls of desalination plants off the Mediterranean coast of Israel. The first specimens were collected in 2010, thus predating all previously published records of this species in the Mediterranean Sea.
