Which tool to distinguish transient alumina from alpha alumina in thermally grown alumina scales?

International audience; Alumina scales constitute excellent protective barriers when they form on alumina-forming steels. If they keep tightly adherent to the underlying substrate, they isolate it from the surrounding aggressive atmosphere at high temperature. The protectiveness of the alumina scale is highly dependant upon its growth mechanism. The nucleation and transformation of transient alumina (mainly g-Al2O3 and y-Al2O3) is known to play an important role on alumina scale formation. Extractive-Pyrolytic Method for Au/MeO<sub>x</sub> Nanocomposites Production

Au/MeOx(MeOx- SiO2, Al2O3and TiO2) nanocomposites have been produced by the extractive-pyrolytic method. An organic extract – a solution of n-trioctylammonium tetrachlorolaurate ([Oct3NH]AuCl4) in toluene – was used as a gold-containing precursor. The produced samples were analyzed by IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The performed studies have shown that the mean size of the metal crystallites vary within wide limits: on Al2O3from 60 nm to 35 nm; on SiO2from 33 nm to 23 nm; on TiO2from 50 nm to 13 nm.
Synthesis and characterization of ZnO nano and micro structures grown by low temperature spray pyrolysis and vapor transport.

In this work we present a systematic study of ZnO micro and nanostructures grown by spray pyrolysis (SP) and by physical vapour transport (PVT) on glass and c-sapphire substrates at low temperatures. Optimised growth conditions have allowed to obtain homogeneous ZnO nanolayers composed of quasi-spherical nanoparticles in the range 2 to 8 nm by spray pyrolysis, while by PVT the selected growth conditions allow to produce a wide variety of morphologies (tripods, grains, arrows and wires) of nano and microsize dimension. Unraveling the strain state of GaN down to single nanowires

International audience; GaN nanowires (NWs) grown by molecular beam epitaxy are usually assumed free of strain in spite of different individual luminescence signatures. To ascertain this usual assumption, the c/a of a GaN NW assembly has been characterized using both X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy, with scaling the measurement down to the single NW. Free-standing single NWs have been observed free of strain-defined as [c/a = (c/a)(o)]/(c/a)(o)-within the experimental accuracy amounting to 1.25 x 10(-4). SNOM study of ferroelectric domains in doped LiNbO3 crystals

Abstract This work shows a study of the periodic ferroelectric domains formed in LiNbO3 crystals doped with rare earths by means of scanning near field optical microscopy (SNOM) technique. It has been observed periodic structures associated with ferroelectric domains with an unexpected high value of the optical contrast working under reflectance SNOM mode. From Raman-Nath diffraction patterns, a refractive index modulation of Δ n ∼ 1 0 − 4 has been calculated. These results were correlated with the ferroelectric periodic domains obtained by the SNOM technique. Cinnabar phase in ZnSe at high pressure

We have performed an energy-dispersive x-ray-diffraction experiment on ${\mathrm{ZnSe}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{Te}}_{x}$ alloys under high pressure with $x=0,$ 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2. In the downstroke a hexagonal phase appears. We suggest that this phase is cinnabar, whose stability range decreases as the Te content is reduced. The analysis of the whole series of compositions enables us to establish its lattice parameters in ZnSe $(a=3.785\AA{}$ and $c=8.844\AA{}$ at 10.5 GPa). The extinction of some diffraction peaks also suggests that the internal parameters u and $v$ are close to 0.5, indicating that the cinnabar phase in ZnSe is similar to that observed in GaAs and ZnTe.

In this study, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the geometry, electronic structure, morphology, and photoluminescence properties of CaZrO3:Eu3+ materials. The polymeric precursor method was employed to synthesize CaZrO3:Eu3+ crystals, while density functional theory calculations were performed to determine the geometrical and electronic properties of CaZrO3:Eu3+ in its ground and excited electronic states (singlet and triplet). The results were combined with X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements to elucidate the local structural changes induced by the introduction of Eu3+ in the crystal lattice. Soret Effect In Forced Rayleigh-scattering

In forced Rayleigh scattering of mixtures or suspensions the temperature gratings generate, by the Soret effect, concentration gratings that may be very important since they produce both a phase and an amplitude grating superimposed on the principal one. The experimental evidence of their influence was given by Thyagarajan and Lallemand using a mixture of carbondisulfide and ethanol. In this paper we study the temporal behaviour of the concentration grating versus the sample properties and its effect on the detected diffracted beam. Explicit expressions are given for the output intensity taking into account both the generated amplitude and phase gratings.
