Transient elastography: A non-invasive tool for assessing liver fibrosis in HIV/HCV patients

2010

AIM: To assess the prevalence of advanced liver fibrosis (ALF) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis C virus (HCV) and HIV/HCV patients using transient elastography, and to identify factors associated with ALF. METHODS: Between September 2008 and October 2009, 71 HIV mono-infected, 57 HIV/HCV co-infected and 53 HCV mono-infected patients on regular follow-up at our Center were enrolled in this study. Alcohol intake, the main parameters of liver function, presence of HCV-RNA, HIV-RNA, duration of highly active anti-retroviral therapy (HAART) and CD4 cell count were recorded. ALF was defined as liver stiffness (LS) ≥ 9.5 kPa. To estimate liver fibrosis (LF) a further 2 reliable bio…

Diagnostic value of MR-based texture analysis for the assessment of hepatic fibrosis in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)

2019

PurposeTo investigate the performance of MR-based texture analysis (TA) for the assessment of hepatic fibrosis in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).MethodsFifty-four adult patients (33 females, 21 males, mean age 49.813.5years) with biopsy-proven NAFLD were enrolled and underwent MR imaging on a 1.5T system. TA parameters were extracted on axial noncontrast 3D-GRE T1W images (slice thickness=4.6mm) using a commercially available research software (TexRAD). Receiver operating curves (ROC), areas under the ROC (AUROC) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated to assess the accuracy of each TA parameter for the diagnosis of significant (F2) and advanced fibrosis (F…

HRCT and scleroderma: semiquantitative evaluation of lung damage and functional abnormalities.

2007

This study sought to validate the Warrick score in the assessment of lung involvement in systemic sclerosis (SSc) and correlate the results with functional abnormalities. In addition, we propose the use of high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) indices of alveolitis and fibrosis to discriminate between different stages of the disease.Thirty-one patients with SSc (16 with the diffuse form and 15 with the limited form) underwent functional and HRCT evaluations of the lung. The semiquantitative evaluation of radiological involvement, as proposed by Warrick, provides a score for each lesion based on the severity and the extent of the pulmonary damage. In addition to the total score, indices…

Internalized myofiber capillaries: Observations on their origin and clinical features

1989

Internalized capillaries limited to type 1 muscle fibers were noted in seven patients. They occurred in each case in association with a similar admixture of neurogenic and myopathic features that included atrophic and hypertrophic fibers, internal nuclei, fiber splitting, and endomyseal and perimyseal fibrosis. Internalized capillaries in enlarged type 1 fibers arose from fiber splits on step section study of four patients. They occurred in the gastrocnemius, quadriceps, and soleus muscles from patients with a variety of disorders that included Becker dystrophy, diabetes mellitus and strenuous leg activities, Achilles tendon rupture, and myotonic dystrophy. Exercise-induced myalgias were no…

Essential thrombocythemia or chronic idiopathic myelofibrosis? A single-center study based on hematopoietic bone marrow histology.

2006

We reviewed a large series of patients with essential thrombocythemia diagnosed on the basis of the Polycythemia Vera Study Group criteria, and reclassified them by evaluating their major morphologic features and clinical course using the World Health Organization classification. The morphologic review of the bone marrow biopsies of 116 patients (44 males and 72 females; aged 19 - 83 years, median 55 years; median follow-up 121 months) led to 22 cases (19%) being classified as essential thrombocythemia (ET), 24 (21%) as chronic idiopathic myelofibrosis (CIMF)-0, 44 (37%) as CIMF-1, 13 (12%) as CIMF-2, 9 (8%) as latent phase polycythemia vera, and four (3%) as chronic myeloproliferative diso…

Transforming growth factor-β1 in autoimmune hepatitis: correlation of liver tissue expression and serum levels with disease activity

1998

Abstract Background/Aims: Transforming growth factor-β 1 (TGF-β 1 ) is considered the most important mediator of hepatic fibrogenesis. At the same time, TGF-β 1 is an immunosuppressive cytokine. Development of fibrosis, often rapid, is a characteristic of autoimmune hepatitis, as is spontaneous systemic immunosuppression. The aim of our study was therefore to define the role of TGF-β 1 in autoimmune hepatitis. Methods/Results: Using the MV 1Lu bioassay, we found markedly elevated serum levels of TGF-β 1 (median 109 ng/ml) in active autoimmune hepatitis, which normalised when patients reached biochemical remission following immunosuppressive therapy (median 34 ng/ml; p =0.0001 compared to ac…

A comprehensive untargeted metabonomic analysis of human steatotic liver tissue by RP and HILIC chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry reveals i…

2011

Steatosis, or excessive accumulation of lipids in the liver, is a generally accepted previous step to the development of more severe conditions like nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis. We aimed, to characterize the metabolic profile that defines simple steatosis in human tissue and to identify potential disturbances in the hepatic metabolism that could favor the switch to progressive liver damage. A total of 46 samples, 23 from steatotic and 23 from nonsteatotic human livers, were analyzed following a holistic LC-MS-based metabonomic analysis that combines RP and HILIC chromatographic separations. Multivariate statistical data analysis satisfactorily classified samples an…
