A stochastic model of seed dispersal pattern to assess seed predation by ants in annual dry grasslands

2005

A combined field experiment and modelling approach has been used to provide evidence that ants may be responsible for an observed lower patchiness and higher plant diversity in the neighbourhood of ant nests, within Mediterranean dry grasslands belonging to the phytosociological class Tuberarietea guttatae. The hypothesis was that seeds occurring in clumps may have an higher probability to be harvested than seeds having a scattered distribution. In order to test this hypothesis, four analysis steps have been performed. First, the seed productivity and dispersal pattern was recorded for four plant species found, either more abundant beside the ant nests (Tuberaria guttata, Euphorbia exigua) …

Examining the side effects of organizational Internet monitoring on employees

2020

PurposeInternet monitoring in organizations can be used to monitor risks associated with Internet usage and information systems in organizations, such as employees' cyberloafing behavior and information security incidents. Extant research has mainly discussed the effect of Internet monitoring in achieving the targeted goals (e.g. mitigating cyberloafing behavior and information security incidents), but little attention has been paid to the possible side effects of Internet monitoring. Drawing on affective events theory, the authors attempt to reveal that Internet monitoring may cause side effects on employees' Internet usage policy satisfaction, intrinsic work motivation and affective organ…

Evaluation of a microclimate model for predicting the thermal behavior of different ground surfaces

2013

The microclimate model ENVI-met Version 4 was evaluated with field data in terms of the thermal behavior of different types of ground surface. A field experiment was conducted in a real construction project in Guangzhou, South China, from 29 August to 2 September in 2010. The surface types of concrete, tile, asphalt and grass were investigated. The comparison between observation and prediction was performed for both sub- and above-surface variables, including soil temperature at different depths, soil heat flux at the surface, surface temperature, and air temperature and humidity at different heights. The results show that the ENVI-met model is capable of reasonably modelling the diurnal th…

Discrimination in the sharing economy: evidence from a hungarian field experiment on the topic of ridesharing

2018

This paper describes small-scale experimental research (total N=160) implemented in Hungary in summer 2017 by TÁRKI, the Hungarian Social Research Centre. The research was based on a controlled field experimental design and examined the chances of ethnically different testers being offered rides on the most well-known international ridesharing platform. The creation of eight experimental profiles enabled us to test the interaction between two experimental stimuli: ethnic/racial background and gender. The present paper provides evidence of ethnic/racial disproportionality in offers of rides to the different testers by multiethnic drivers. A large-size effect was detected in the case of the A…

LES DISCRIMINATIONS A L'EMBAUCHE DANS LA SPHERE PUBLIQUE : EFFETS RESPECTIFS DE L'ADRESSE ET DE L'ORIGINE

2016

Improving Teachers' Professionalism on an Experimental Basis

2013

International audience; While education economists have paid considerable attention to the performance of the education sectors, they have placed little emphasis on the management of the pedagogical process. In the context of developing countries, there are clear signs of weak management and too many school personnel neglect tasks deemed essential for student learning. Using data from a large - scale experiment conducted recently in Madagascar, thearticle analyzes the variations in impact of a set of management interventions designed to improve the engagement at work of public primary school teachers. While school - level interventions raise the teachers' level of professionalism on average…

Trade-off between warning signal efficacy and mating success in the wood tiger moth

2011

The coloration of species can have multiple functions, such as predator avoidance and sexual signalling, that directly affect fitness. As selection should favour traits that positively affect fitness, the genes underlying the trait should reach fixation, thereby preventing the evolution of polymorphisms. This is particularly true for aposematic species that rely on coloration as a warning signal to advertise their unprofitability to predators. Nonetheless, there are numerous examples of aposematic species showing remarkable colour polymorphisms. We examined whether colour polymorphism in the wood tiger moth is maintained by trade-offs between different functions of coloration. In Finland, m…
