Electrodermal activity in response to a set of mental tasks in caregivers of persons with autism spectrum disorders

2011

IntroductionAnalysing reactivity to laboratory stressor in lab is a valid model for understanding how people act in real-life situations. Electrodermal activity is a good index of emotionality, which has not been analysed in caregivers of persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs).Objectives and aimsThis work aims to compare the response of electrodermal activity to mental stress between caregivers of ASDs people and controls, as the former could show a different response due to their particular situation characterised by a state of continuous alert.MethodsParents of both genders of people with (n = 44) or without (n = 42) ASDs carried out a set of different mental tasks. Skin Conductanc…

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Associated to Long-term Dissociative Fugue: A Case Report

2009

Aims:Since the end of 19th century, mental health professionals have noticed that individuals who have experienced traumatic situations often present dissociative symptoms, such as amnesia or fugue states. Dissociation is a defensive mechanism that allows an individual to separate from conscience the psychological distress produced by the trauma. Our aim was to remark the association between Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and long-term dissociative disorders through the study of a clinical case.Method:A clinical case was followed and reviewed to illustrate this relationship. Results:Ten years ago, a 49-year-old man was diagnosed of PTSD after having witnessed several colleagues burnt …

Prenatal exposure to persistent organic pollutants and rapid weight gain and overweight in infancy

2013

Objective To examine the effects of prenatal exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs) on rapid growth in the first 6 months of life and overweight at 14 months of age. Design and Methods In a Spanish birth cohort study, the POPs dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs—congeners 153, 138, 180) were measured in maternal serum collected in the first trimester of pregnancy during 2003–2008. Rapid growth was defined as a z-score weight gain >0.67 SD between 6 months of age and birth. Overweight at 14 months was defined as a BMI z-score ≥85th percentile. Generalized linear models examined the association between POPs and rapid g…

2021

Abstract Background Standard therapy for localised, resectable high risk soft tissue sarcomas consists of wide excision and radiotherapy over several weeks. This treatment schedule is hardly feasible in geriatric and frail patients. In order not to withhold radiotherapy from these patients, hypofractionated radiotherapy with 25 Gy in 5 fractions was evaluated in a geriatric patient population. Patients and methods A retrospective analysis was performed of 18 geriatric patients with resectable high risk soft tissue sarcomas of extremities and thoracic wall. Wound healing and short term oncologic outcome were analysed. In addition, dose constraints for radiotherapy of the extremities were tra…

Cost-effectiveness analysis of statins in primary care: results from the Arteris cohort study.

2021

BACKGROUND The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health performed a health technology assessment regarding statins in primary care. The chosen models may lead to a situation where a clinically indicated statin therapy is estimated not to be cost effective. METHODS We performed a cohort study regarding cardiovascular events, comparing SCORE and AGLA risk categories with tertiles of carotid plaque burden and used two models for cost-effectiveness analysis of high-potency statins. RESULTS Subjects (n = 2842) were followed up for 5.9 ± 2.9 years with the occurrence of 154 cardiovascular events (extrapolated 10-year risk was 9.2%). Carotid plaque imaging (total plaque area, TPA) significantly impro…

AB0929 Balance in fibromyalgia is not related with lower limb strength

2017

Background Postural control, that depends on many sensory contributors and motor skills, is altered in people with fibromyalgia (FM) 1–3. Knowing those contributors that could be impaired in this population is important to design an appropriate balance therapy. Objectives Due to the fact that people with FM use to present a strength loss 7, our main goal was to explore the relation between postural control and lower limb strength in this population. Further, the sensory inputs contributors to the postural control were assessed. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in a sample of 40 FM patients. A force platform was used to assess postural control under five bipedal conditions: i) e…

Population‐based study of the treatment and prognosis of carcinoma of the rectum

1997

Background Few population-based studies address the issue of treatment of carcinoma of the rectum (15 cm or less from the anal vcrge) both from surgical and epidemiological aspects. Methods Some 827 patients were analysed in the cancer registry of the Cote-d'Or (Burgundy, France) from 1976 to 1990 (493 931 inhabitants). Results Resection for cure increased from 57.2 per cent before 1981 to 77.0 per cent after 1985 (P <11.001), and the proportion of Dukes A and B cascs from 35.8 to 52.5 per cent (P< 0.001). Among patients resected for cure, continence-preserving resections were performed more frequently during the 1986-1990 period (48.0 per cent) than during the two previous 5-year periods (…

Prevention of thromboembolic complications in patients with superficial-vein thrombosis given rivaroxaban or fondaparinux: the open-label, randomised…

2017

Summary Background Superficial-vein thrombosis can lead to deep-vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Rivaroxaban, an oral factor Xa inhibitor, might simplify treatment compared with fondaparinux because it does not require daily subcutaneous injection and is cheaper. We compared efficacy outcomes in patients with superficial-vein thrombosis and additional risk factors given either rivaroxaban or fondaparinux to assess whether rivaroxaban is non-inferior to fondaparinux in the prevention of thromboembolic complications. Methods In this open-label, masked endpoint, randomised, non-inferiority phase 3b trial, we recruited patients aged 18 years or older with symptomatic superficial-vein thr…

Ageing and sexuality

2016

Abstract Sexuality is a dimension that concerns human health with profound implications not only in the biological and psychological aspects, but also in the social and cultural dimensions, affecting all ages of life. Sexuality in old age is still conditioned by biases, prejudices and from a stereotyped vision, which considered older people as “asexual”, in spite of several studies and surveys showing that older persons have sexual potential to express. In population surveys, a fair number of men and women aged over 60 years reported having sex at least once a month. The most influential predictor of sexual activity seems to be the physical health in older men, and the quality of the relati…

Obesity, Adipokines and Metabolic Syndrome in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

2012

The complex mechanisms linking fat excess to metabolic syndrome are not well understood, but several experimental studies have shown that altered production of adipokines plays a main role in development and progression of this disorder. In particular, reduced secretion of adiponectin has a crucial role in inducing insulin resistance but also in determining the clustering of elevated triglycerides and small, dense LDL particles. Increased leptin secretion may be responsible for sympathetic nervous system overactivity and hypertension, while reduced omentin may have an important permissive role in the development of atherogenic processes. Finally, cytokines and other adipokines (resistin, vi…
